birds of the air

DSC_1445 1

The other morning, I was looking for my computer cord and I ended up outside birdwatching.  We all know how these things happen.

DSC_1448 1

It’s exciting to see birds at my bird feeder but even more exciting to find them out in nature living their little feathered lives.

I know every bird of the mountains,
And everything that moves in the field is Mine.

There is a lot of stuff in the air this week, it lands on the top of the stream and gathers in front of logs across the water….that white stuff is all little fuzzies and bits….the ponds are the same way, covered with a film of allergens.

I see a football, too.

DSC_1392

In the very bright sunshine, Jacob and Emily helped me dig up a little Pinxter bush from the side of the road!  I was very excited, truth be told, Jacob did ALL the work.  But he had a captive audience and Emily had a tiny speaker clipped to her belt buckle so we listened to tunes, too.

We planted it right by the bench that Ethan put together for me.  I’ll never forget this day that we planted it together, me, my son, and his girlfriend.  It was fun and I look forward to seeing it grow and grow through the years.

DSC_1401 1

While I was birdwatching, I found this perfectly good board on the side of the road.  I brought it home and washed it and asked Jacob to paint it.  We are going to hang it up by the pond where we have many frogs and the occasional toad.

I know right away when I love a song……as soon as I hear it, it sort of stops me in my tracks.  I travel away into the song, forgetting everything around me….

and this is one of them!

A song for a Friday.

(Grace sent it to me one day in a message through FB.)

IMG_6104

Today was Senior Skip day.  Ethan made homemade pancakes for breakfast using his Grandma’s recipe for himself and four of his friends.  While he was making them, I got ready to go out shopping and then the phone rang.  It was the elementary school nurse calling me in regards to Seth.  She wanted me to come and get him because he was uncomfortable with an allergic reaction in his eye.

Do any of you have this problem?  Or a child with this problem?  It’s the dust.  It gets in his eye and the eyeball itself swells, sometimes the lid and the “bag” underneath also swells, but the eye gets red and itchy, too.  It happens randomly now that it’s springtime and most often when he is on the little league field playing ball in all that dust.  I normally do nothing about it but a cool washcloth because it resolves within a few hours, but it does look and feel terrible.

I asked him when I walked him out to the car, “Seth, Mommy was about to go to Target but I suppose you probably can’t go because of your sore eye, right?”  And he sighed like a martyr and said, “I can go.  It’s just an eye.”  “Oh, Seth!  Are you sure?”  “Yeah”, he says, with that same little sigh but I know very well he’s dying to go to Target with me.

IMG_6112

“Why are there so many cars there?”
“Is this the road Aunt Amanda lives on?”
“Can I have batting gloves?”
“Can we go to Dick’s?”
“Can I get a batting helmet?”
“What’s your age plus Dad’s age?”
“Is anyone at home right now?”
“When does David get home?”
“Can we listen to music?”
“Am I going to practice tonight?”
“Are we still in Connecticut?”

He had lots of questions and as is typical, whenever one child is with me, that child talks nonstop to Mom and I sit and drive and smile and listen and my heart….it swells up so big with joy.  I say, “You are so cute.” and I reach over to pat their shoulder now and then.

IMG_6115

We went to Goodwill first and I actually found a piece of fiestaware.  It’s a seamist sugar bowl without the lid.  It was super exciting.  I also got a springtime wreath for 3 dollars and some other odds and ends.

Mainly, the purpose of the trip was to have fun getting a few summer items for Seth and Sarah.  Sarah has grown so much that her last year’s shorts are much too short.  I keep saying to her, “Yes you can wear those shorts to school IF you put a skirt on over them.”  The one pair of longer shorts she has she refuses to wear because she thinks they are swimming shorts.

IMG_6117

Seth found a Land’s End swimming shirt at Goodwill.  He says he likes it because it will keep him warm under the water.  He also got a pair of swimming trunks (Lego Movie) from Target.

IMG_6118

This bottle was 50 cents at Goodwill.  I brought it home and put dandelion seeds in it.

We ate chick fil a drive thru for lunch and he said, “Thanks, Mom.”  And he also said, while eating, “I bet fries are made of potatoes.”  He said this after he noticed the waffle fry had skin on it like a potato.  It only took him seven years to figure it out!

He bought a calculator from Goodwill for a dollar and made up math problems to ask me.  He was so surprised, stunned really, when I got them right.  Mind you, it was first grade math.

When we got home he played baseball for a little while and I planted carrots and sunflowers.

Now he’s snoring on the couch, five minutes after telling me he didn’t want to take a nap.

It’s been a super delightful morning with my Sethie.

EVERYONE say HI to RACHEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night at the winter sports awards Dave had my camera and she squealed, “Take my picture so I can be on your Mom’s blog!”

She’s adorable.  Grace tells me that Rachel is a devoted reader of this blog and for that I say, “I’m so very glad you enjoy it and yes you may save any photo you want!”  xoxo

DSC_0410

I had to run over to get in a picture, too, (along with goofy wrestling boys in the background).  Gosh, I look tired almost like I had spent half the day saving my flock of hens from a fox.  (true story)

Rachel is the fabulous Mary Poppins in our upcoming school play so she’ll make another appearance here soon…..stay tuned!

DSC_0411

It was a fun night honoring the winter sports.  We had pizza in the cafeteria, awards in the auditorium, and then broke into groups in order to honor individual sports.

DSC_0414

Rich was this year’s head coach for wrestling.  He presented each of his boys a certificate and told everyone in the room his favorite memory of the season for each of the boys.

Doesn’t Ethan look handsome? As soon as the night was over, Jacob walked up to him and said good naturally but emphatic, “Now get my brand new tie off, E!”  I laughed and laughed because Ethan doesn’t ask to wear his brother’s clothes, he simply takes them.

DSC_0417

Rich was told by another coach that his wrestlers were the best dressed team of the night.  I would have to agree.  🙂

DSC_0418

Caleb, Seth, and Sarah Joy wanted to be in a  picture, too.  I simply must mention that Sarah is amusing us lately by trying to be stylish.  She puts thought into her attire and dresses herself in certain outfits every day.  Today she carefully chose a dress to wear.  Last night it was all purple: pants, shirt, and sparkly headband.  She wanted to wear her earrings again after months of refusing to wear them.  Personally, I think she’s being influenced by a friend at school to dress up more fancy.  IT’S SO SO CUTE!!!

DSC_0425

DSC_0426

I had my camera around my neck down low, shooting “blindly”, and this was the shocked expression I got from David when I said, “I’m shooting you, Dave.”  (with my camera, of course)

Caleb and Seth were busy fooling around in the hallways.  At one point, Seth was hanging upside down behind Caleb as Caleb held his legs.

Me and my handsome, handsome husband who has a BIRTHDAY TODAY!!

Happy Birthday, love.  ❤

John 12:12=24

Yesterday at church Seth was sitting close by my side, just where I like him to be.  I gave him a pen and paper to give him something to do and it soon became apparent to me that his mind was occupied with, not religious matters, but mathematics.  He was busy writing a story during the sermon and this is what it said:

The lazy Dog by Seth

Captr One

Once thar was a dog the dog was rily smart.  The dog new what 100 + 100 is and 200 + 200 is but one day the dog didint no what something was and it was 100 + 800 and he thinnked and thinnked but he couldn’t do it so he ascked the techer.  The techer didn’t now so the techer thincked and thincked and the techer got it and it was 900.

Chapter 2

The techer was smorter then the dog the techer new wat 100-15 was it was 85.

That was all he was able to get done during the sermon.  It was quite a laborious task for him.  He whispered a couple of questions to me when he needed some help with it.  One question was “How do you spell ‘what'”(he didn’t care about the other words) and the other was “What is 100 minus 15?”

He informed me that it will be 90 chapters long.  To which I replied, “90-2=88”

Then he told me that he knew what 12 plus 12 was.  He told me this after staring at the sermon text for a while.

DSC_1807

Rich and Ethan worked together on Sunday morning.  But first, they gazed into the waters of the pond, longing to see their beloved fish.  They saw three under the dock, two by the pipe, and one near the shore.

DSC_1809

I spent the entire day on Saturday worried about Sarah because she was running a fever and complaining of a headache.  After her surgery on the 3rd and her procedure on the 10th, everything in me wanted to rush her to the hospital for fear she had an infection, but logic and my husband held me back.  Thankfully, on Sunday she woke up fine but pale so we stayed home from church to give her a day of rest.  (Rich didn’t want to go without me because he’s going to be away half of this week on a business trip.)

The chicken coop needed its spring clean-out.  Rich let Ethan drive the tractor for the first time and the two of them scraped all of the old bedding and hen droppings out of the coop and drove them in the bucket to the vegetable garden.

DSC_1813

I watched from the porch as Rich coached Ethan VERY thoroughly in turning the tractor back around.  I wondered why so much laughing was happening, and why Rich was so interested in Ethan turning around “just so” when Ethan has been driving for over a year now……

DSC_1816

And why on earth Ethan found it all so very funny……and then…..I saw what was happening…….

DSC_1818

Rich was instructing Ethan to back over my shoes which I had kicked off while cleaning up my flower beds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Good boy, E, for not doing it!

After they got all the old bedding into the garden, Rich rototilled it all into the dirt.  I asked him three times NOT to disturb my beloved rhubarb, and he asked me to come over and show him exactly where it was.  And what did I see through the window when I was in the house making lunch? Something that very much looked like running over AND digging through the very spot I had showed him NOT to disturb.  “Did you dig up my rhubarb?” I asked as soon as I got the chance.  “I might have,” he said sorrowfully.  I. could.not.believe.it.  “Why did you ask me to show you where it was when you were just going to run it over anyway?” I cried.  He said, “You are acting like I did it on purpose!  I didn’t!  I just forgot it was there!”

I cannot tell you how many times over the years that this man has forgotten “something was there” in the garden or lawn and ran it over, mowed it down, or dug it up.  And then he wonders why I get upset.   After all, it was only an innocent accident!

(You would think he would be more understanding when I ACCIDENTALLY put his clothes in his son’s dresser! )

DSC_1820

David went to his favorite “junk” store downtown and bought an army jacket for 15 dollars.  He said there was a name on it that the lady picked off with a seam ripper first, because the man didn’t want his name out in public.  David had me wash and dry his jacket, although he did enjoy smelling like the store for a day.  (aromatherapy)

DSC_1812 1

David was instructed to prune back branches and briars from the edge of the property and guess what he did?  Because he is his father’s son, he also cut down one of my favorite white birch trees!  And then when I reprimanded him he got offended and hurt that I was upset and bringing it up repeatedly.  He thought I had a mean expression on my face and was treating him unlovingly!  Am I really expected to hold these men in my arms and soothe them by saying “there, there” when they accidentally destroy all my plants?   He spent a bit of time with his friend Michael cleaning up the tree and all the many branches.  There is a pile out by the driveway to be burned.

DSC_1826

I didn’t get pictures of Grace’s first driving lesson.  She drove my car (with her Dad in the passenger seat and Ethan in the back) from the top driveway to the lower driveway.  Sarah and I leaned over the porch railing clutching our hearts and watching, running from railing to railing to keep an eye on her.  When Grace got out, Sarah yelled “Good job, Grace!  You only made two mistakes!”  She was very proud of her sister.  Ethan got out of the back with a look on his face that said, “Did you see that mom it was scary.”  Grace had a bounce in her step and thought she did well.  “Although I don’t think Dad realized at first that when he yelled at me to do something it would make me do it faster.”  (like brake?)

DSC_1831

Grace read her book all over the place.  On couch, on porch, on patio, on swing.  She was reading a Janette Oke book, remember those?

DSC_1833

I began planting spring bulbs.  I saw worms!  I accidentally cut one in two, as a matter of fact.

DSC_1835

Rich took me to admire the freshly cleaned chicken coop.

DSC_1837

DSC_1863

Caleb was coaching his friend Logan across the stream.  Logan was yelling nervously, “Caleb!  I’m on a wobbly rock!”  Once he was safely to the other side, I heard Coach Caleb inform him that it had taken entirely too long.

DSC_1887

I sat on the back of the truck and watched the birds come to the feeder which I hung in the bushes by the driveway.  They were chirping and peeping and fluttering all over the place.  It was quite dizzying.  As soon as one took a seed, it flew to a branch to eat it while another bird quickly took it’s place at the feeder to do the same, and over and over they took turns.

DSC_0003

There was a male cardinal moving about in the leaves underneath.  I did so want a photo– but they all looked like this:

DSC_1877

FINALLY, after much patience on my part, the cardinal went into an open space:

DSC_0006

I LOVE THIS PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The neatest thing happened while I was watching.  All of a sudden, another cardinal way off in the distance called, and this one IMMEDIATELY without hesitation flew away to see what it wanted.  I wish my kids were like that.  😉

thank you, Davy

“Mom, as long as I’m in the house you will never have dull knives again.”

David babysat one day last week and instead of money, he asked if he could order a knife sharpener of all things.  He had studiously watched online reviews before his purchase and was excited to try it out on all the kitchen knives.

There are moments every day that make me pause and praise; “I’m so glad to be alive for this.”  I know you have them, too.

DSC_0813

Seven years ago today I was about ready to give birth to baby boy number five.

Today is super exciting because not only is it Seth William’s birthday but it is also our school’s 100 day AND groundhogs day AND Seth is having a friend get off the bus at our house after school to play until wrestling practice.

“Seth, you’re going to be really happy and excited today so try hard not to let yourself get into trouble” were my words of advice as I hugged him goodbye this morning.

Dad said that winter is over, the ground hog didn’t see his shadow.  Hurray!

Sarah had to take 100 of something/anything to school and I sent her with a puzzle that was 100 pieces, she wasn’t that thrilled because she doesn’t like pigs.  “They are made out of meat and wolves eat them.” she explained.

So far today:

1. Got kids ready for school, took shower, got dressed for a meeting and then remembered it was happening tomorrow.

2. welcomed Kevin into the house to repair Grace’s ceiling.

3. watched an episode of The Good Wife while folding clothes and matching socks.

4. Went out shopping.  First stop:  Goodwill

what I bought:

DSC_0823

Harry Potter book on cd which the kids are going to LOVE
Angelina Ballerina hardcover book for our family library
an old frame with an oval mat
a nature book
and two dresses, one for me and one for G…guess what, April?  One is Garnet Hill and one is Boden!
DSC_0826

This dress is Grace’s.  The sleeves are 3/4 length and gathered at the ends.  Both dresses are made from a soft knit and are currently spinning around in the washer with hopes that I have time to dry them outside on the clothesline by the end of the day.

DSC_0824

This one is mine.  The lengths on each dress fall just below the knee.

5.  After Goodwill (I also bought a very much needed bookcase for G’s room) I went to the Tractor Supply for bird seed, chicken feed, and cat food.

6. Costco for Seth’s birthday cake and groceries

7. Starbucks for a coffee and a snack

8. Arrived at home and Michael helped me put everything away.

9. went to coop to gather (1) egg and feed the hens.

10.  hung laundry on clothesline for the second time this week (it’s about 45 degrees here and sunny)

11. made homemade spaghetti sauce with a big 6 pound can of tomatoes that I got at Costco today.  I blended them smooth and poured them in a big pot over 5 cloves of minced garlic and a chopped onion, added pepper and dried basil.  Now it will simmer for a few hours and I will make homemade meatballs.  What with Sarah needing to reduce sodium I am noticing salt in many of the food goods I’ve purchased in the past.  For many years I’ve obsessed about sugar and now it’s salt I have to be concerned about. Thankfully there is a simple solution…like make everything yourself (spaghetti sauce) instead of buying processed foods.  The can of tomatoes I bought had only 1% of the daily allowance of sodium and since I’m putting some salt in the meatballs I am not adding any to the sauce.

12. Put away groceries

13.  That’s it.

DSC_0821

This is dear sweet Seth opening one of his gifts this morning.  He received legos, glow in the dark plastic dinosaurs, and a Snoopy video game.  Sarah was happy because she helped me chose a couple of the gift from the hospitals gift shop while we were there a few weeks ago.  She was so happy that she told Seth they were legos before he opened them.

DSC_0409

I think the noisiest school gym is the one hosting an all day wrestling tournament.  There is nonstop yelling, crying, whistling, thumping of mats, cheering, and so on.  By the end of the day my head feels like it’s vibrating from all the sensory overload.  HOWEVER, I have come to enjoy the sport.  It’s fun to watch and there is so much pride when your kid (my kid=my own boys plus any boy from our town) wins.

DSC_0438

This is Seth getting a pep talk after a loss.  He made the strangest faces as he tried not to cry.   It was adorable.

Seth after a win.

He had four matches and only lost one of them, so he achieved a second place medal.

I watched all of Seth’s matches and then Rich arrived (after church) and I left to take Sarah home for Ethan to babysit.  When I returned, Caleb had already lost his first match but I was just in time to see him win the second one.  (he got second place)

DSC_0555

This is a really nice picture of David.  Unfortunately he didn’t have a really nice day and was beaten in all three of his matches.

DSC_0563

There are so many emotions in this sport!  But he recovered quickly.  He’s improving all the time, it’s just that currently he is at a rough stage because his body is growing so fast he can’t keep up with it.

DSC_0600

Yesterday I made Seth fold clothes.  We received a box of gifts from Hannah and he couldn’t open his until the job was done.

DSC_0603

He opened up…..a moose money bank!  He was so happy.

DSC_0591

Sarah got animals, toy animals from Alaska!  And she took a bath with them, which is one of her most favorite pastimes.

DSC_0598

Caleb received a sling shot, which David taught him how to use.

Each member of the family had a present to open and we were all very thankful for the thoughtful gifts from our dear Alaska~Hannah.

DSC_0608

At the end of the day Sarah, Caleb, and David went outside to play.

DSC_0612

David was target practicing.  He put an apple on a box and I watched him shoot all of his arrows and……

DSC_0615

Soooooooo funny.

He did eventually hit it, however, and then he ate the apple.

DSC_0626

Caleb went down the hill on a snowboard.

I am very happy to say that his school still sends the kids outside to play even if there is snow on the ground.  It’s so important for them to get fresh air.  Today Caleb got on the bus with two big bags full of his snow gear, his backpack, and his percussion music set.  But he’s strong and tough so he did just fine.

DSC_0630

Isn’t he so handsome?  Oh how I love this boy of mine.  His cheeks are so kissable.

DSC_0620

And Sarah…ugh….she is something else.  I’ve doted on her so much that now as soon as she sees me she immedietly thinks of all kinds of problems for me to solve.  At this point she was slightly uncomfortable about the sled Caleb found for her to use and wanted me to do something about it so I did.  I went back in the house.  I looked out the window and she was absolutely fine and happily sledding again.  (Now that she is almost 100% back to health after her surgery I am going to have to stop being so over the top motherly with her or she will be impossible to live with.)

This morning after the kids got on the bus, Hallelujah,….I took down all the fiesta greens (evergreen, juniper, sage, shamrock, seamist, light green, dark green)…..

AND ADDED ROSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (Scarlet got to stay put for another month).

I always keep the cobalt on the very top, it is The Honored Color in my house because it’s the very first color I started collecting 18 years ago.

What’s he up to now?

David is all interested in candy making these days!  He’s quite a fun kid, I love the way he has such an interest in doing things.  He gets inspired by youtube videos, books, and tv shows.  Then he quietly sets to work, following directions carefully and never cleaning up after himself.

He’s been asking me:  “Did you get any more corn syrup?”

He made hard candy three times, his first batch was eaten by the dog.

He also made taffy.  I had a piece and it tasted like watermelon.

12622489_10153752845766343_4797351045368766316_o

This was his second batch of hard candy.  He poured it out onto a greased cookie sheet and after it was cool and hard he pounded it with the back of a spoon to make serving sized pieces (serving sizes for large people and/or elephants).  I wonder if he’s making candy or dentist bills?  I keep telling him to go easy on the consumption of all the candy and to make sure he brushes his teeth.  But other than that, I don’t discourage him because maybe he’ll be a famous candy maker someday.

Taffy and hard candy!  I’ve never gotten the courage to make those things!

DSC_0272

I bought him flavors for his candy and he also picked out some lego candy molds.

DSC_0274

The candy is so hard that it will take you half the day to finish just one piece!

wrestling photos

DSC_3495

I went to Ethan’s wrestling tournament on Saturday and I was too late to watch his first match in which he lost…..I arrived just in time to see this bleak scene.  I was able to sit by Ethan and try to cheer him up by saying things like, “Do you want a drink?  Do you want a banana?”  “I’m going to sit right here and not leave your side, E.”  “Do you want me to rub your sore shoulder?”  Although he didn’t want anything, I did finally get a few smiles out of him.

I am of the opinion that, even as a mere spectator, wrestling is extremely draining!  To anticipate the matches and then watch my own boy plus the other boys (which are also “my” boys) wrestle….to see them fight so very hard, get hurt, bleed, lose, win.  It’s all quite exciting.  I hate it in some ways.  The gym is a bee hive of activity and so very loud, for instance.  But it’s also a lot of fun and I’m always always impressed by the strength of every wrestler.

DSC_3500

DSC_3493

Rich has someone tape each match and I noticed that Gage is always quite eager to watch himself right after he’s done with a match.  One of my wrestling mama-buddies is Nicole in the striped shirt (her son behind her is a great friend of Jacob and Ethan).

DSC_3504

Sarah runs as wild as possible, plays with Seth and James (the other coach’s little boy) and this Saturday she had a silly situation with static charged hair.

Grace is a team manager and keeps score with the book.

DSC_3530

Seth took his shoes off so he could get on the wrestling mats as much as he could, got scolded for it several times, but he is like everyone’s little brother and they love him.  I took this picture because he was actually standing still, watching a boy get his ankle examined by a trainer.  He would silently look at what the trainer was doing and then look at the face of the boy.  The only thing that scared me was that he might have gotten it into his head to think an injury would be really cool…like, it’s a sign of being a big-time athlete.

DSC_0019

Well, E had two forfeits to wait through and then low and behold, he was up against the very same guy who beat him badly the first match.  But this time Ethan came very close to winning.

DSC_0083

He fought so so hard.  As usual, I felt as if I were fighting along with him.  Oh how painful it is to have them lose by only one point!  But his dad was thrilled to see him come back and fight hard.

Well, the next day was Seth’s turn.  Finally he could be on the mats all the time he wanted.  His first match was a loss and he got dumped on his head a few times.  It was quite deflating for our boy Seth.  But after resting on Dad for a little while, he very bravely wrestled three more times and won each time, receiving a 2nd place medal.

DSC_0225

Caleb wrestled three times and lost each one…however, he was braver by the last match and was much improved.

My three younger boys only have one more tournament to be in but Ethan will have several more opportunities to wrestle before the High School season is over.
