“Mom, you’re the best mom in the world.” says Caleb

“I would have to agree with you,” I tease with a hug.

“You really are the best Mom,” says Seth.

“If you were the worse Mom ever, I would be crying right now.” he further explains.

Reason number one (why I haven’t been blogging):

WRESTLING

Wrestling is coming to a close for the season which means all the meets are even more important than usual.  On Friday I drove to the HS meet to watch my husband’s team.

To watch my husband.

The gym was absolutely packed to the gills with people.  Seth, Sarah, and Caleb ran off to the cafeteria to play with other random children and to say hi to the goat which one of the coaches brings to the all meets in a carrier.  Seth borrowed my phone to take a video of the goat.  I sat by Grace and Angelina and chatted with my wrestling mom friends.  All our chats have to be done with yelling voices, so we can hear each other over the din.

dsc_0162

Cody was wrestling in this photo.  We had already been in the gym for several hours.  He was the only one on the team to make states, which will be held this weekend.  Rich and Jacob are in the far corner, coaching him.

dsc_0167

After Cody had wrestled I decided to head out and go home.  It was after 8 and the drive was 40 minutes.  The kids were getting tired.  And I was getting tired.

We walked out the door and behind the school through the snow to get to my car, which I had parked far away because there was no more room in the main lot.

It was magical to be outside at night with only the lights of the school shining for us.

She thought it was super stylish to wear one of her black socks pulled up on the outside of her pants.

dsc_0172

REASON NUMBER 2:  The Stomach Bug

The strange thing is, by the time we got home she was complaining that she felt sick.  I tucked them all into bed and I went promptly to sleep.  The next morning Rich told me, “Sarah’s sick.  She threw up all over her bed and floor.  I gave her a bath last night at 11.”

Grace had helped him clean up the mess and inside I was singing praises that I missed out on the vomit clean up for once in my life.

REASON NUMBER THREE:  Trip to Rhode Island

dsc_0174

On Sunday we went to watch the last meet of Ethan’s college season.  He wrestled twice.  The first time was against the number one guy and he was pinned within the first minute of the match.  The second time was a loss by only 2 points.  11-8.  He has improved amazingly over the last few months.  We stayed to watch the whole entire meet so we could bring him home with us afterwards.

REASON number 4:  bird watching, house cleaning, cooking, too much distraction all around me, too tired, writers block, not taking pictures as I usually do and a general feeling of “who cares” anyway.

dsc_0175

But all good things.  How thankful I am to be able to be home with the children.  They had Monday and Tuesday off from school for Presidents’ day and they were free and happy.  We still have snow on the ground but the air was mild and sweet so they spent lots of time outside.

At the end of the day there was an epic sword fight.

And this morning?  They are back to school, all but David, who now has the stomach bug.

Ethan is away for a day of skiing with his girlfriend and her family.

tired

DSC_1271

I am currently sitting on the couch fully dressed and ready to go to yet another Children’s Hospital appointment with Sarah Joy in regards to her kidney.   I have my robe on over my clothes because I am freezing.  It’s 46 degrees outside with a very strong and persistent wind.  In other words, it feels like a rather blustery day, today.  I will take the robe off before I pick Sarah up from school, hopefully, and put on a winter coat.

I am exhausted.  I am thinking about all the things that my family has planned for the next month:  prom for Grace, Senior banquet for Grace (who is dating a senior) and Ethan (my senior son), baccalaureate, graduation, field trips, concerts, a church picnic and baptism at which my son Caleb will be baptized, graduation party for Ethan, Rich has two business trips, and all this along with the little league games that happen several times a week and the little surprises that life throws at us now and then…..and I am exhausted.  Did I mention I am tired?

DSC_1272

I keep thinking:  “Do one thing mindfully at a time with as much love and care as possible.”  This is easier said than done.  Especially the “mindfully one thing at a time” part.

I also keep thinking “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

And lastly, I keep thinking “I want to sleep, but at least I’m not crying or anxious.”

This morning I found nine fiesta bowls, three plates, a bunch of paper plates, and four mugs in the basement, left there by Ethan, Grace, Caleb, Kylie, Zak, David, Caleb, and Zach.  (all teenagers) Seriously?  What I have to say is this:  “There is to be no more eating downstairs, my dear children.”

DSC_1273

The other day (when it wasn’t 46 degrees), David and his friends played in the stream.  It’s funny because of of them is named Michael, and since we already have a Michael here all the time, we differentiate them by calling the younger one “up the road Michael”.   (Because he lives… up the road.)

DSC_1279

I was attempting a photo of the hanging baskets which are so pretty, but you can’t really see them very well.   Thankfully, the house, garage, and lawns are pretty tidy at this point and there won’t be much to do to prepare outside for the picnic and party.   I’ve been doing a lot of gardening, which is probably why I’m so tired.  My body is trying to get back into the swing of things after a long winter.

DSC_1284

David could not find a golf tee so used a pencil.  Genius (although it took about five minutes to get the ball to balance).

DSC_1310

I picked a small bouquet of violets, buttercups, bluets, and Kentucky bluegrass.

There is something quite calming about looking through the grass for just the right flower, bending, picking, adding it to the bouquet and then doing it over again and again until you’re done.

DSC_1295

And this little bird…a very dark photo….which is a hazard of shooting in manual mode but then seeing something you have to photograph before it flies away so you don’t think to change your settings and then the picture is either blown out or too dark.  However, I can identify the bird as an…..OVENBIRD.  Thanks to my Merlin ID app on my phone (indispensable!!) “Secretive warbler that lacks vibrant colors, but compensates with its enormous voice.”

Yep, that’s right.  I got a photo of a secretive bird!  I do feel proud.

Well that about does it for this blog post and thank you all very much for listening.  As a writer of blogs and journals, I do feel better after a good scratch of the pencil  or tip tap on the computer keys!

IMG_6003

During all these years there existed within me a tendency to follow Nature in her walks.
John James Audubon

Several days ago, after Aunt Colleen and Uncle Roger visited me, I meandered back to the interesting patch of violets we had discovered.  We liked them because of their pale and dainty purple faces.  I took a photo while flat on my tummy and, unsurprisingly, it proved to be a quite comfortable spot for a short rest.  I could hear my two youngest children playing together on the trampoline.  They called to me, “Mom!  Hi, MOM!” and I waved to them and smiled.  I soon heard a beautiful bird song in the trees.  Often I hear bewitching birdsongs but alas, cannot see the bird.  But this time, as I sat and folded my legs up Indian-style, I peered into the trees with my chin high and saw a startling spot of red.  As Colleen and I visited, we had talked of birds and flowers.  I asked her if she ever saw Scarlet Tanagers at her house.  I told her how a few years back I had seen one and would like very much to see another, never expecting that after her visit one would come close enough for me to hear its singing, and see it’s bright red feathered coat.

IMG_6011

I watched the Scarlet Tanager until it flew away.  Then I saw a small red thing in the grass next to me.  I picked it very carefully up, expecting it to be a mushroomy fungus type of thing.

But it had legs.

IMG_6012

It was so all over red!  Quite fascinating indeed.

There is a sense of glorious freedom in the air this week.  In the beginning of the month, for dreary days on end, there was nothing but gray skies and cold rain.  But now, once again, the sun is shining and every plant, bird, animal, and human can’t help but be a little more active, a little more cheerful.

I sat against a pine tree by the pond to watch the vultures.  At first I wondered if I was watching a courtship, since there were only two and they were staying close to each other.  At one point they were both on the same branch, side by side.

But then I saw a rustling in the bushes underneath them.  Jacob and I walked over and looked, but we didn’t see a dying animal.  However, we did not search thoroughly because I, for one, had a very creepy crawly feeling and he kept saying “I have to leave in 10 minutes for school, Mom.”

DSC_1145

They are a rather gothic-looking bird, wrapped in long black feathered cloaks.  Red bald heads and a white beak complete the deathly attire.  They are useful but chilling birds, as they are attracted to the scent of dying animals and dumpsters.

They flew away as they sensed that Jacob and I were observing them but they came back at the end of the day while Rich and I were away at a little league game.  Sarah told me later that she saw one up close while she was on the play set.

I feel like there might be more to this story.  I will investigate later on and see if they return today.

DSC_1161

I always look for this turtle, as I can usually find it out sunning himself as I walk along the edge of our lawn.  We have a stream that goes along the far side of our property, and the water is always a good location to see a variety of different flowers, birds, and other creatures.

I loved how the turtle had its funny legs hanging loosely out of his shell, soaking up all the warmth of the sun.  His neck was stretched out as far as it could go, to keep an eye on me (his enemy, he thinks, but I would never hurt him).  Soon he slipped back into the dark water.  It was fun to imagine his sweet and simple life.

DSC_1165

I want to try to draw these curly, swirly vines with green leaves just popping out.  Wouldn’t they make a nice border for a picture?

DSC_1168

Watching fish swim this way and that way is mesmerizing.  Meditation is quite natural while watching them.  There are fish of all sizes in the pond, which I like to think of as our own giant fish tank.  The smallest minnows stayed closer to me and I was able to watch them for a long time.  The way they swim is a marvel.  Smoothly they swim along and then *STOP*– with no hesitation or slowing down, before swimming along again.

DSC_1171

Every black speck is a toad tadpole.  Sometimes a bunch of them get stranded on dry land from living too dangerously on the edge of the water.  They die, but if I happen to be walking by I do some life-saving and scrape them back into the pond again.  Their little tails wriggle.  I ring Jacob on my cellphone to tell him to call the dog up to the house.  If Parker the dog is outside he does whatever I do, and a dog watching tadpoles is never a good thing.

DSC_1219

This sweet little bird wanted me to leave.

It had a nest nearby.

But my seat was soft.  It was moss.

DSC_1257

I saw a Solitary Sandpiper next!  Oh what a day for birds.

This bird bobbed up and down as it walked, so very charmingly!  It made me want to hum a song.  A bouncy song.

I love the refection it made of its solitary self as it edged along the calm water of the open stream.

DSC_1255

I wanted to get a little closer to it, so I took my seat off the soft moss and climbed up on the rocks.

But then……….

DSC_1260

DSC_1261

DSC_1264

I froze (and so did he).  I considered.  The rocks I was upon were the very best apartment complex for the snake population I ever did see.  Surrounded by water, open sunshine, and many small meals.  But while I admired the wise choices of this snake, I decided not to take another step on those rocks……good bye snake, good bye birds.  I’m going home now.

DSC_1265

In my hands I carried a stick covered in ridges and indentations from a bug?or worm?  The bark was off so it was smooth other than the hollow tracking marks.  It looked like a secret message written in another language, if only I could decipher it.  I had a sprig of apple blossoms, two sweet white violets, a marsh marigold (which promptly wilted in the vase at home) and another yellow wild flower.

I revelled in my alone-ness.  It felt so good (nature’s spa treatments) to walk in my flip-flops through marshy cool waters.  I had been prowling about for an hour or so and felt quiet, dirty, rested, and as deliciously solitary as the Sandpiper I had met.  I came out of the woods at the end of the long pond to see that I had company.  The lawn men had arrived, and one of them was busily cursing his weed eater as he worked along the side bank by the pond.

It was very tempting to turn around and go right back in the woods.

turtles, flowers, dogs, & birds

DSC_0816

I’m skipping right over Tuesday and blogging about yesterday because Tuesday’s pictures are on my phone and I don’t feel like retrieving them at the moment…..

We spent the entire day at home as I was feeling kind of crappy (allergies? not sure…but I was tired and fuzzy headed).

The kids basically did whatever they wanted to do, within reason of course.

DSC_0818

Just another carefree day, the kind we love best.

I went over to take care of my poor chickens.  And on the way back from the coop I found a teeny tiny turtle in the grass by the pond!!!!!  I put it in the front pocket of my sweatshirt and darned if it didn’t run right back out onto the ground.  Baby turtles are FAST.

DSC_0817

It was so cute.  I took it in the house to show the children.  Sarah didn’t want to touch it but I “made” her.  (encouraged) She was shaking and giggling nervously.  But once she had it “This is my first time touching a turtle!” She didn’t want to let it go.  She wanted it for a pet.

DSC_0820

The two of us sat by the edge of the pond and watched it enter the water for the very first time.  Then we walked around trying to find more turtles, but we didn’t.  Maybe we will on another spring day.

DSC_0825

There was a line at the nesting box.  This photo is of the front of one hen and the back of another.  I say “poor” chickens because, as I have mentioned in past posts, there is a fox after them.  So they have to stay locked up for now.  Mr. Fox has only killed one hen and that was heartbreaking enough.  This morning I plan on driving to Agway to purchase a supply of tempting feed and treats for my poor hens, to make their stay in the coop more tolerable.

I do let them out in their fenced in area if I am able to be at home to continually check on them.

DSC_0828

DSC_0830

DSC_0831

Ethan spent the day with his girlfriend, Tessa.  She brought her dog to our house, so Parker the Dog had a lovely time yesterday with his bestie, Benji.  They got wet, they got muddy, they played their favorite dog games.

DSC_0833

Benji received an egg from my pocket, just like Parker, but he was clueless.  See the invisible question mark above his head?  Parker was already lapping out raw egg from HIS shell which he broke himself with his teeth.  Benji’s egg is by his left paw, right where he dropped it.

DSC_0834

?

DSC_0836

So Caleb took Benji’s egg to the pathway and broke it for him……yum.  Nothing like a raw egg still warm from the chicken (so they say).

DSC_0837

Later on, my husband got home and took the boys to Little League practice.  (Grace made chili for dinner).  I sat on the porch with my book but didn’t read it because my friend Sarah Joy had lots and lots to talk about.  I had my camera with me and shot two bird pictures from my chair on the porch as I listened to her chit-chat.  Not too bad for spur-of-the-moment photography, with the birds about a mile away (slight exaggeration).

A Flicker sat on the very tippy top of the dead tree in front of the house.  I read that they eat on the ground—they eat mainly ants and beetles, using their beak to dig them up.  They are such a beautiful bird, one of my favorites.  They have polka dots, a nice black “necklace” and a patch of red on the back of their necks.

DSC_0838

And then Sarah and I saw a duck.

We went inside after this and she read me 30 pages of a 1904 school Primer (early reader).  She snuggled up into my side and I smelled her hair and listened as she read in a sweet voice, laughing together at the funny parts.  (we totally get 1904 humor).

childhood delights

“God doesn’t need us to serve Him as a means to attain His love or affection.  He wants us to serve him out of the love and affection he already holds for us in his heart.  If you have never tasted that reality, you cannot imagine the freedom that lies ahead of you.  My Father brought me to the place where I realized that even if I never preached another sermon, never counseled another person, never led someone to Christ again, he would still delight in me as his child.
“That doesn’t mean he approves of everything I do, but he has freed me to know that he loves me–absolutely and completely.  I had served God for thirty-four years, always with an undercurrent of trying to earn his favor.  It has only been in the last twelve that I’ve learned to live in that favor, and I’m never going back.
“That’s when it became clear.  It is not the fear of losing God’s favor that takes us to the depth of fellowship with him and transforms our lives with his holiness.  It is our certainty of knowing his unrelenting love for us, even in the midst of our weakness and failure, that leads us to the fullness of his life.
“Fear had never taken me to the depths of his life or his transforming power; discovering his delight has.  I now know that the key to God’s favor doesn’t rest on what I give him but on what he has already given me.
“He delights in you, too.  Can you see him that way, exalting and dancing with joy over you?  Are you afraid you can’t offer him enough to make him notice you?
“Then come with me and let me show you something.  He doesn’t delight in you because of your deeds or your gifts.  He delights in you simply because you are his.  The Lord your God is with you….He will take great delight in you.”

After years of having a subscription to Country Living I let it run out and now get Cooks Illustrated, which I love reading through.  It’s a cooking magazine for readers, as most of the magazine is very long explanations of recipes and THEN the recipe.  And I also used the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook again, this time to make potato bread.

Star Wars the newest movie became available to purchase on amazon prime so we decided to buy it and eat all the junk food we wanted.  (we were sad because Rich had left for a 10 day business trip).

IMG_5258

My very favorite way to eat my morning eggs!  I found an old bag of frozen raw shrimp from Costco which had been in the deep freeze for like a year.  So I thought I would throw a handful in the pan along with some peppers (also bagged frozen).  When the shrimp and peppers were cooked I put them on a plate and then scrambled three eggs and ate it all together while closing my eyes and saying “this is SO good!”  Jacob cooks his eggs at the same time.  It’s fun to be together.

“Snow falling soundlessly in the middle of the night will always fill my heart with sweet clarity”  ~Takemoto

When we woke up that morning….

….the peonies were covered in snow.

The *all but opened* tulips were exposed to freezing temperatures.  The question is will they still bloom?

I quickly picked our *just opened* daffodils.  (They are now sitting on the windowsill in a vase, looking out at the white white world, thankful to have not frozen to death.)

We had to resurrect the snowsuits, gloves, boots, and hats.

Children had a snow day yesterday.

Even now, there are little glassy specks of snow in the air (20 degree air).

DSC_0484

It was dazzling beyond words.  It pulled us outside to only try to capture God’s beauty with a humble camera which never does nature justice, the pictures it takes only save a small flat, tasteless, odorless, lukewarm piece of it.  They should be cold as ice and as big as the sky!

In reality there was wind in our faces, cold snow falling in our shoes, pain while looking into the bright sun on snow, shock of having a greening spring all of a sudden turn back into black and blue winter, along with the sound of water running and birds singing!

all the exciting stuff we did on saturday

We drove out to NY on Saturday.  We stopped at the mall in Albany because I had Macy’s money that was going to expire that day and I wanted to see if there was a good selection of fiestaware….there wasn’t.  The only thing they had besides the typical place settings, mugs, plates, and bowls was a single white disc pitcher so that’s what I got.  It was free so I was happy.  Rich and the kids ate at the food court before we hit the road again.

Grace and Jacob were not with us on Saturday because G had a singing obligation and J had to work.  They drove out on Sunday morning with Emily, Jacob’s girlfriend.

The next stop on Saturday was a very popular chicken BBQ place.  The kids played on the playground and Rich took a nap on a picnic table, while yours truly ordered a chicken dinner take out.

IMG_5059

I sat in the car to eat it because it was too cold outside for me.

IMG_5063

We drove to our hotel.  The kids swam for a while and Rich went running in the work out room.  I rested (I was suffering from a sinus headache all day) and then went down to watch the kids swim.

IMG_5069

After swimming we drove to an antique store in B. that I knew had fiestaware because my Mom and sister had texted me pictures a few days before.  I will post the photo of what I bought at the end of this post.  It didn’t take long at the antique store and then we went to a really popular produce stand in the area (where Rich and I grew up).  We all picked out our favorite fruits to eat from this place that I have been going to since I was a child.

They allow sampling of the fruit.

This was pretty much the best day ever because after that, we went bowling.

And then!  Pizza!

Caleb and I were both reading Harry Potter #4 but he had left his copy in the hotel so we shared my copy while we waited for our pizza to arrive.  We have both moved on to #5 now and I’m beating him. (He finished #4 first) As soon as he got off the bus today I said, “I’m on page 130!” and he said “Quit reading!”

It’s always so so good for Rich and I to go back home and visit our old haunts!

(We are high school sweethearts and both our families go back several generations in our hometown)……..

Rich and Ethan worked together on Sunday morning.  But first, they gazed into the waters of the pond, longing to see their beloved fish.  They saw three under the dock, two by the pipe, and one near the shore.

DSC_1809

I spent the entire day on Saturday worried about Sarah because she was running a fever and complaining of a headache.  After her surgery on the 3rd and her procedure on the 10th, everything in me wanted to rush her to the hospital for fear she had an infection, but logic and my husband held me back.  Thankfully, on Sunday she woke up fine but pale so we stayed home from church to give her a day of rest.  (Rich didn’t want to go without me because he’s going to be away half of this week on a business trip.)

The chicken coop needed its spring clean-out.  Rich let Ethan drive the tractor for the first time and the two of them scraped all of the old bedding and hen droppings out of the coop and drove them in the bucket to the vegetable garden.

DSC_1813

I watched from the porch as Rich coached Ethan VERY thoroughly in turning the tractor back around.  I wondered why so much laughing was happening, and why Rich was so interested in Ethan turning around “just so” when Ethan has been driving for over a year now……

DSC_1816

And why on earth Ethan found it all so very funny……and then…..I saw what was happening…….

DSC_1818

Rich was instructing Ethan to back over my shoes which I had kicked off while cleaning up my flower beds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Good boy, E, for not doing it!

After they got all the old bedding into the garden, Rich rototilled it all into the dirt.  I asked him three times NOT to disturb my beloved rhubarb, and he asked me to come over and show him exactly where it was.  And what did I see through the window when I was in the house making lunch? Something that very much looked like running over AND digging through the very spot I had showed him NOT to disturb.  “Did you dig up my rhubarb?” I asked as soon as I got the chance.  “I might have,” he said sorrowfully.  I. could.not.believe.it.  “Why did you ask me to show you where it was when you were just going to run it over anyway?” I cried.  He said, “You are acting like I did it on purpose!  I didn’t!  I just forgot it was there!”

I cannot tell you how many times over the years that this man has forgotten “something was there” in the garden or lawn and ran it over, mowed it down, or dug it up.  And then he wonders why I get upset.   After all, it was only an innocent accident!

(You would think he would be more understanding when I ACCIDENTALLY put his clothes in his son’s dresser! )

DSC_1820

David went to his favorite “junk” store downtown and bought an army jacket for 15 dollars.  He said there was a name on it that the lady picked off with a seam ripper first, because the man didn’t want his name out in public.  David had me wash and dry his jacket, although he did enjoy smelling like the store for a day.  (aromatherapy)

DSC_1812 1

David was instructed to prune back branches and briars from the edge of the property and guess what he did?  Because he is his father’s son, he also cut down one of my favorite white birch trees!  And then when I reprimanded him he got offended and hurt that I was upset and bringing it up repeatedly.  He thought I had a mean expression on my face and was treating him unlovingly!  Am I really expected to hold these men in my arms and soothe them by saying “there, there” when they accidentally destroy all my plants?   He spent a bit of time with his friend Michael cleaning up the tree and all the many branches.  There is a pile out by the driveway to be burned.

DSC_1826

I didn’t get pictures of Grace’s first driving lesson.  She drove my car (with her Dad in the passenger seat and Ethan in the back) from the top driveway to the lower driveway.  Sarah and I leaned over the porch railing clutching our hearts and watching, running from railing to railing to keep an eye on her.  When Grace got out, Sarah yelled “Good job, Grace!  You only made two mistakes!”  She was very proud of her sister.  Ethan got out of the back with a look on his face that said, “Did you see that mom it was scary.”  Grace had a bounce in her step and thought she did well.  “Although I don’t think Dad realized at first that when he yelled at me to do something it would make me do it faster.”  (like brake?)

DSC_1831

Grace read her book all over the place.  On couch, on porch, on patio, on swing.  She was reading a Janette Oke book, remember those?

DSC_1833

I began planting spring bulbs.  I saw worms!  I accidentally cut one in two, as a matter of fact.

Rich took me to admire the freshly cleaned chicken coop.

Caleb was coaching his friend Logan across the stream.  Logan was yelling nervously, “Caleb!  I’m on a wobbly rock!”  Once he was safely to the other side, I heard Coach Caleb inform him that it had taken entirely too long.

DSC_1887

I sat on the back of the truck and watched the birds come to the feeder which I hung in the bushes by the driveway.  They were chirping and peeping and fluttering all over the place.  It was quite dizzying.  As soon as one took a seed, it flew to a branch to eat it while another bird quickly took it’s place at the feeder to do the same, and over and over they took turns.

There was a male cardinal moving about in the leaves underneath.  I did so want a photo– but they all looked like this:

DSC_1877

FINALLY, after much patience on my part, the cardinal went into an open space:

DSC_0006

I LOVE THIS PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The neatest thing happened while I was watching.  All of a sudden, another cardinal way off in the distance called, and this one IMMEDIATELY without hesitation flew away to see what it wanted.  I wish my kids were like that.  😉

The moon was quite distracting two nights ago.

Spring in general is quite distracting and I mean that in the very best of ways….after a quiet winter all nature is alive with growing things, singing birds, visiting ducks, opening buds, blooming flowers,,,,,,,and procreating toads.

DSC_2227

I have an affection for toads.  Thanks to the fabulous Handbook of Nature Study, I have learned some charming basics of their simple yet fascinating ways.

“Whoever has not had a pet toad has missed a most entertaining experience.  Toad actions are surprisingly interesting; one of my safeguards against the blues is the memory of the thoughtful way one of my pet toads rubbed and patted its stomach with its little hands after it had swallowed a June bug.” page 170

Every time I read the above quote I am filled with longing for a pet toad of my own.  I need an aquarium and a toad.  This would currently be the ideal time for finding a toad, I could take a pick from a very many many many of them right out of my own pond.  But soon they will be done with laying eggs and hop away again and we will only come across them randomly in the woods as we walk along.

DSC_2228

Toads lay their eggs in very long strings of black dots.  Soon a jelly will form around the eggs and the tadpoles will develop, tiny at first and then growing little by little until soon a miniature  toad will be perfectly formed about the size of a pencil eraser.  When that happens, they will hop out of the pond to make their way in the world.  It’s so fun to watch year and after year.

DSC_2231

Male toads are smaller than the females, which are plump with eggs.  All the single males sit on the side of the pond and sing a magnetic song….with the purpose of calling to himself a lovely female.

I sat and watched this one for quite a while, it never moved, and never attracted a female.  I hope it had success after I left.

DSC_2232

The males are so ready for action that when the kids catch one it immediately hugs their hand or  wrist, and needs to be pried gently off.  Interestingly, if a male tries to “hug” another male, he knows something is wrong right away and lets go almost as soon as it grips.  “begs pardon”

DSC_2237

Our dog Parker came to investigate along with us and caught a couple of toads in his mouth.  While Sarah and I were yelling at him, he rushed away up the bank with his prize.  But very soon he dropped them and started gagging repeatedly and foaming at the mouth.  I was telling my friend about this and she said that her dog did the same thing.  She found out that the toads spit some kind of nasty fluid which make the dogs drop them….a lovely defense mechanism.

I learned more this morning:  “The warts upon the back are glands, which secrete a substance disagreeable for the animal seeking toad dinners.  This is especially true of the glands in the elongated swellings above and just back of the ear, which are called the parotid glands; these give forth a milky, poisonous substance when the toad is seized by an enemy, although the snakes do not seem to mid it.”  page 173

Other toad facts:

It eats insects and worms.
It doesn’t drink water, it absorbs it through its skin.
It burrows into the ground, typically staying there during the day and coming out at night to eat…also, it burrows deeply into the earth to sleep all winter….awaking in the warmth of spring.
It breathes air by swallowing it into the lungs.
It sheds its skin as it grows, and eats it.
It likes having its back scratched gently.
Its chief enemy is the snake.

This little boy SETH is recovering from ear infections, bronchitis and a cracked nose (trampoline collision with Caleb)…but nothing slows him down…usually has a glove and baseball at all times and dirt on the knees and under the fingernails.  Very rare boy, one of a kind really, and belongs to a proud mama and papa.
