Everything is flowing — going somewhere, animals and so-called lifeless rocks as well as water. Thus the snow flows fast or slow in grand beauty-making glaciers and avalanches; the air in majestic floods carrying minerals, plant leaves, seeds, spores, with streams of music and fragrance; water streams carrying rocks… While the stars go streaming through space pulsed on and on forever like blood…in Nature’s warm heart. John Muir

Hello, it was one of those weird weeks when things are sort of crappy but sort of unexpectedly nice, at the same time.

Rich was away for five days in a row and we dealt with the stomach bug while he was away. Sarah was supposed to go in for surgery on Thursday morning but as things would have it, I went to bed that night and NEVER SLEPT because my stomach was roiling.  My stomach felt as if it contained a turbulent, oily sea.  I was looking forward to vomiting.  Sarah had been sick on Monday, then David, and then Ethan.  They shared it with me!  I called the hospital at 4 in the morning so I could stop thinking about it.  They kindly rescheduled her surgery for this next coming Thursday.  I was happy.  I thought to myself, how nice, Rich will be back by then and I won’t have to go with Sarah alone after all.  I thought this for about 24 hours before I found out that Rich will be in Baltimore on that day.  I just have to laugh.  At least he will be home that evening.

I spent Thursday on the couch, with Ethan on the other couch.  It was the most relaxing sickness I think I have ever had.  This was the unexpectedly nice part.  The throwing up went away and I was left completely spent…..totally wiped out but with a smile on my face because I had no energy to even OVERTHINK…praise the Lord!  😉  I didn’t feel guilty in the least for not cooking dinner, not cleaning, drinking lots of sugar laden ginger ale, not tucking the boys into bed, watching too much tv, not showering, etc, I was just plain too tired to care!  LOL  (and so was E).

I fell asleep on the couch with Sarah at 6:30 pm Thursday, it was truly heart achingly sweet to be snuggled up with her.  We woke up and went to bed at 8 (when the little boys got home from wrestling practice thank you Jess) and I slept until 10:30 Friday morning.  It was awesome, and even better–Rich got home during that time.  He got out of bed in the morning to get the kids on the bus and then came back to bed and we both slept in.

Today is Saturday and he took the kids out for a little while.  Ethan broke his iPhone dropping it while playing basketball so they went to take care of that and to go shoot bow.  He sent me a picture of them eating lunch at Buffalo Wild wings.  He has David, Ethan, Tessa, Zak, Sarah, Seth, and Caleb with him.  LOL -the more the merrier-  Grace is at school  helping out at a band retreat and Jacob is working today until three.

When they left I watched a little TV and then went outside for a walk.  Yes, I’m feeling much better and it was wonderful to be outside.  Cold, but wonderful.  (34 degrees currently).

Granted, I’m a pretty loud walker (trying to scare away bears) so it’s a miracle if I can get a bird within 35 feet of me.  Today I had a short lens but I cropped this pic….see the titmouse on the branch?  There were several of them, including some chickadees, and they were being quite communicative.  They were clearly mad that I was walking with a cat.

happy here

corners of our home

DSC_1246

I remembered my old gentle books.  They were scattered throughout the house, neglected, so I searched all the bookcases we have in our home, and found most of them.  I’m still missing several (gasp), no doubt under someone’s bed or tucked away in a forgotten spot.

I still remember the first time I pulled Anne of Avonlea out of a bookcase in the elementary school library.   After enjoying Anne, I happily went on to read every one of Montgomery’s other novels.  I discovered newer publications of her short stories and gobbled those up as well.  Then, as an adult, I found her posthumous journals and read a biography written by Mary Henley Rubio as soon as it came out.  The journals and biography were fascinating but depressing for me, as her mental state was quite fragile, but this mind of hers was a beautiful gift regardless of her struggles, as out of it came stories that remain beloved by so many even after all these years.

DSC_1250

During the same years that I read LM Montomery’s books, I found and read Cynthia Voigt with the same passion.  I loved reading all of Voigt’s novels and shared them with my mom and my book-loving friends and then my daughter, who loves them, too.  I read On Fortune’s Wheel over and over through the years…..the Dicey books and the Kingdom books will always be mine.

DSC_1238

On my bedside table……..

I am reading The Seven Storey Mountain, by Thomas Merton.  Although I just started it, I can already tell it is a most excellent book that will remain in our home library.

DSC_1252

While I was waiting for the boys in the dentist office the other day I picked up a current copy of People magazine and came across an article about the woman who wrote The Life Changing Habit of Tidying Up which I have purposely avoided even looking at because it has been everywhere lately.  Surprisingly, I read the article with fascination!  No wonder the book is a best seller….the author is intriguing and unique to say the least.  I read just one of her many suggestions, this one about folding clothes into little bundles and standing them up in drawers, and just look at what happened in Sarah’s room (only)!!!!

(I ordered the book).

Rich gave me this perfume for Valentines’s Day.  It’s my new favorite!

This is how we keep track of our receipts…with an old vintage invoice spike that I found thrifting.  This is the only way to do it, IMO.

DSC_1260

I keep track of daily life by writing everything (appointments, birthdays, Rich’s business trips, the kids sports games and school concerts, etc) down on the calendar in our room.  By the end of the year I don’t want to throw them away because it’s such a condensed but detailed view of our family life.

day of snow

DSC_0833

The first thing we all did this morning was check to see if there was a snow day and YES we had no school for the first time this winter.  The ground was already covered with fresh white snow.

Ethan shoveled the driveway.

Yesterday we had carpet guys come and start work replacing our carpet upstairs.  They did  half of the job and then had to come out today to do the rest while a multitude of snowflakes fell outside.  It was cozy inside with all the children and the workers.  I got busy in the kitchen.

I made two pans of apple crisp and a pot of clam chowder for lunch and invited them to eat with us.  One of the guys said my chowder was better than his wife’s.  He said he wouldn’t tell her though.

old bananas, etc

I am eating this right now.  It is so good…….

So last night I overfilled my goulash casserole and it dripped all over the bottom of the oven as it baked and filled the kitchen with smoke.  As a result, I can’t make my lemon banana bread this morning until the oven self cleaner is done.  It’s 34 degrees outside, the sun is shining brilliantly, my house is once again smelling of smoke as the oven cleans.  I have windows and doors open to keep the smoke alarm from going off.

DSC_0736

This morning the first thing she said to me was, “Can I put a puzzle together?”  And then she asked me, “Are the Northern Lights REAL?”  After questioning, I learned that she saw a picture of them in Kindergarten.  The puzzle is of Alaskan animals and the Northern Lights can be seen in Alaska so I was floored by the entire conversation which occurred much too early in the morning (6:30am).

DSC_0726

We bought this small piece of furniture this weekend from the guy down the road.  He refinishes pieces and we really like him and his shop.  It’s very rustic and down to earth.  This small chest of drawers, very narrow but made of hard wood, has two shallow drawers and one deep drawer.  From now on the mail and papers get stuffed into it rather than piled on the counter.  The pile was driving me nuts.

I’m freezing..hold on…I gotta turn the fan off and shut the door….

DSC_0733

We also bought this chest.  The top opens and shuts without a latch which makes it easy to use and also no children or cats can get trapped inside of it.  I’m using it to hold all the wrestling things and any back packs and bags that I can fit into it, in this way the spot near the door doesn’t have QUITE the pile of stuff it normally does in the evening.  If I put a blanket on top of the chest Gentleman Gray will curl up and sleep on it too; it’s also a cat bed.

DSC_0745

I went to the grocery store before I picked up David from newspaper club yesterday so I could get a few things for goulash dinner.  And guess what?  I discovered a new-to-my-grocery-store flavor of FAGE yogurt!  It’s sooooooooo good!

DSC_0752

ALSO this is very exciting…..Panera bread in the grocery store!!!!!!  I discovered it yesterday by the hot soup station.  I LOVE their tomato basil and I bought the white for the kids and as you can see, it’s almost gone already.

DSC_0755

This is what I’m going to bake as soon as the oven is done cleaning itself.  I said in a few posts back that I wanted to depend more on my cookbooks than the internet and when I realized this morning that I had old bananas, I went and sat on the floor by my cookbook shelf to search for a recipe……and it looks great.  I found eggs in the coop this morning that I will use, too.

B A N A N A  L E M O N  B R E A D

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups mashed banana
6 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon baking soda
3 Tablespoons grated lemon peel

Grease 2 loaf pans or one bundt pan.  In a large bowl cream together the butter and sugar.  Blend in the eggs, bananas, and juice.  Stir in the dry ingredients.  Add the grated lemon peel.  Pour the batter into the prepared pans.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.

Of course, I don’t know how it will turn out.  If it’s a flop I’ll come back online later and cross out the recipe.

Lastly, we (mostly Jacob and myself) have been currently working on a room in the basement and I wanted to show you our style of decorating.  It’s not so much decorating than filling up……and we love it.

Our inspiration?  “The Burrow” from the Harry Potter movies….here is a picture:

3305b4e6fb723aa2df9e54ff8a702093

Now, our room will not be the same because of the very unromantic drop ceiling but that’s beside the point.  What we love is “clutter”, pillows, blankets, comfy lived in couches and chairs, rugs, books everywhere, all kinds of stuff hanging on the walls, just a very eclectic humble and cozy room…..

So far, this is what we’ve accomplished out of practically nothing (cast offs, things from the thrift store, stuff from our own storage that I had put away).

And by the way, this is only part of our basement. There is also a section which is a bedroom for three of the boys, an exercise room with a treadmill, and a storage room.  This part is Jacob’s bedroom/PS4 video game room.  When teenagers come over this is where they end up.  Because it is the basement we threw caution to the wind and cheerfully hung things up everywhere (the walls were bare a month ago).  And we aren’t done!  Jacob is having just as much fun as I am with this space.  It’s been a fun project for us.

Obviously not a very good photo of the curtains, but they are very cool vintage Star Wars curtains that I bought at Iroquois Antiques “back home” several years ago.  David wants me to leave them to him in my will.

The wooden shelf to the far right of the photo next to the TV is Jacob’s rock collection.

The desk was already down there but they moved the two bookcases down, along with the blue chair and the rug.  Michael and Jacob bought the coffee table from walmart but they are looking for another one, possibly a round wooden one.

There is snow falling in blog-land!

How are you, my friends?  I hope you are well, and if you’re anything like me, not feeling your best and trying to be patient while your medication starts to kick in then I hope and pray for you.  Be kind to yourself.  If you’re staying at home too much, get out of the house and go shopping.  That’s what I did today and it helped tremendously.

Everything is going to be okay.

I bought a decorative plate holder and added a vintage yellow fiesta chop plate to the top of my cookbook shelf, right underneath Aunt Colleen’s painting.  I like this little spot in my house.  I put the stool there yesterday and Sarah promptly sat down to sing to herself and color.  While she’s at school, Gentleman Gray sits there and tells me what to do.

the always important little things……

IMG_3396

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

I made this wreath!  About a month ago I went for a walk in the woods and came across a convenient grape vine to pull down.  It was thin and pliable, not like the ones that grow so thick that the only part I can reach is as big around as a small tree with the rest of the vine grown far up into the tree tops.  I pulled the little grapevine down and wound it up into a circle the best I could.  And there it hang, back at home, outside on a nail for a month until I got ” a round tuit”, which was Saturday afternoon.  I went outside with scissors and cut some evergreens (some still had tiny pinecones on them) and wild berries.  I already had the dry grass (the tops look and feel as soft as down) in the house –I picked it from the side of the beaver pond.  I used forest green yarn to tie everything together and a brown ribbon on the bottom, tied in a bow.  I’m way too proud of it.

IMG_3394

I also made a jello cake from my new favorite cookbook.  It was amazing.  In fact……

IMG_3395

As soon as it was done, we ate it all.  (after I took the picture, Ethan ate the last piece).

IMG_3392

It wasn’t hard to eat it all in one go because we had a house FULL.  In this picture there are 10 teenagers, 2 big dogs, and a small gray cat.  There are two kids not in the picture, plus Rich and I.

DSC_2294

But mainly this post is about the love of my life-Richard Charles-who was gone all last week but is now home again and the part of my heart that needs *my husband around all the time* is at peace.  From Monday-Wednesday he was in TX for work and then Thurs-through Saturday afternoon he was finishing up his coaching medical class that he was able to take so he can be the head coach for wrestling at our local HS this year.  He was the assistant last year.  He is going to LOVE coaching….he can’t wait to get started.

Well, I made him a nice “honey-do” list yesterday afternoon when he started hinting at going out for a run (which takes hours)…and he got right to work.  So I thought I would show you some of the other little things we have done around the house lately……..

DSC_2269

He put fresh lightbulbs in the ceiling fan on our cathedral ceiling.

DSC_2271

While the ladder was out, Seth and Sarah decided to climb it.

DSC_2273

(by the way, Seth trimmed his own bangs…he’s such a helpful child!)

DSC_2284

Turns out Sarah is afraid of heights.  I say this because she was only about two feet off the ground and beginning to shake like a leaf.

DSC_2321

He changed out this outlet.  It used to be a plain old outlet but it was loose in the wall and nothing would stay plugged into it, the cords would just fall out.  It’s an important outlet because it’s on the wall at the end of the couch and we like to plug in the electric blanket and phones there.  Consequently, while he was at it, he bought an outlet that has two slots for phone chargers, too.  Very convenient.  It’s amazing how such a small change can lift one’s spirits.

DSC_2319

I bought this plastic bag holder  a few months ago.  It came with sticky strips on the top and bottom but the thing would NOT stay on the wall using just the strips.  So it had to be put away until  yesterday when I got Rich to hang it back up, using screws.  (in the pantry)

DSC_2315

This is our toilet paper dispenser.  Rich actually hung these up a few weeks ago.  We bought one for each the downstairs and upstairs bathrooms because the bathrooms are used so much that we were going through rolls and rolls of toilet paper and the rolls were all over the place.  I love this dispenser because it’s clean, it’s locked, and it holds a large roll of paper.  Half the kids thought it looked too “public bathroom” but I just don’t care…..I can’t tell you how many toilet paper holders have fallen off the walls, it’s nice to know this is here to stay.  Michael says they were hung too low but he’s over 6 feet tall and we were thinking of our small kids at the time……

DSC_2318

I love my new garbage can.  We needed one for our dining room and this one is beautiful.  It also has an open top (flip lids are an extra step) to “make baskets” into.  Sarah can look right inside the top and see her papers from school that I throw away.  Then she can get them right back out again.

DSC_2296

Well, that’s about it as far as small home improvements.  Rich also rehung the towel rack in our bathroom but I didn’t take a picture of that……(small mercies, right?)

DSC_2299

These two little boys were stuck to their dad like glue yesterday watching everything he did and talking to him about football.  It was precious to see.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t still need to remind myself that my life is not just what’s handed to me, nor is it my list of obligations, my accomplishments or failures, or what my family is up to, but rather it is what I choose, day in and day out, to make of it all. When I am able simply to be with things as they are, able to accept the day’s challenges without judging, reaching, or wishing for something else, I feel as if I am receiving the privilege, coming a step closer to being myself.  It’s when I get lost in the day’s details, or so caught up in worries about what might be, that I miss the beauty of what is.”  Katrina Kenison

Today I decide to walk around with my camera to see what I am most grateful for.

Seth sneaks up behind me to steal a hug and as I turn to put my arm around him I catch our reflection in the mirror.  I feel his smooth skin under my hand and see how dark he’s gotten this summer spending so much time outside, just like mine used to when I was small.

Later on, I crop my head out of the photo because I don’t like the way I look, I am ashamed of my double chin and poor posture and can’t bear to leave the photo the way it is.

DSC_1140

He sees what I am doing and makes a face.  He has football practice later and has to rest for a little while so I leave him cuddling up into my down comforter.   Soon he is sound asleep.

DSC_1141

My friend Joanna sends me a letter with photographs that she has taken.  I love seeing her handwriting on the pages.  I am thankful for the last 20 years of writing back and forth with my friend.  She sees beauty all around her and I spend time on my bed putting some of her beauty-pictures in a frame.

DSC_1142

Earlier in the morning I had opened up my Bible and read from Ezra about the time of the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.  I read 1 Corinthians and out loud I read from Psalms.  Sarah listens, curled up with her head in my lap.  She wants Fruit Loops for breakfast.

DSC_1143

Later I spend time looking through old catalogues.  I am working on a piece of mail to send to my friend.  I tear out a couple of pages to send along with a note and an article.  As soon as I open the door to mail it I see my neighbor on the porch about to knock, so we sit down and visit for a while together.

DSC_1144

Our dogs have a playdate and we laugh at her dog meeting our rabbit.  We talk about our children and Caleb talks about Star Wars.  She says she will lend him the movies she has and he squeals with joy.

It’s a beautiful day and we keep seeing hummingbirds.

DSC_1146

I say goodbye to my neighbor and tuck Sarah into bed for her quiet time.  She doesn’t sleep, and I can hear her talking, singing, and making play sounds.  I love to hear them.  Soon she appears downstairs again and I take the coloring books and crayons out of the cupboard for her to draw with.

As I am blogging, the plumber comes to fix the dishwasher.  While he works, I put away my computer and fold the laundry.  I finish my cup of coffee and hang up a load of towels to dry on the clothesline.  Caleb works on a crossword puzzle and Sarah colors in her book.

The sun is shining but there are clouds, too,  and I can’t ignore the anticipation of knowing that my husband and teenagers will be coming home again tomorrow, after being away for a week.

I love these ordinary moments and days the most.

{this moment} home life

Rich and I were on the couch, I was resting my head against his shoulder and listening to the beautiful sound of my children singing together in the other room…..I never dreamed I would be sick this long (this is the 6th day).   I am very sleepy and weak.  It took much strength this morning just to take this video of Grace and Ethan singing….such is the pull of music.

welcoming the month of march…..with more snow….

And a happy Monday, March 2nd to you!  Yesterday we welcomed a new month with yet more snow, enough to delay school this morning by 2 hours.  That’s always fun.  By fun I mean “fun”.  Caleb had sore muscles so after seeing him walk around like an old man and almost crying, I spoon fed him some liquid Advil in the kitchen while making eggs.  Sarah and Seth kept trying to play together, resulting in Sarah yelling at the top of her voice for Seth to “stop it!!” To deal with this situation, I put them each in their rooms to play alone.  Grace felt as if she was getting a cold, so I had her mix up some Emergen-C, and then she needed a container to put it in so she could sip it all morning at school.  She took it in a travel mug.  Ethan put on his boots and went to the chicken coop for me, taking them a bowl of discarded people food and a pitcher of water.  David was told to shovel the walkway and Rich had to “encourage” him in a loud Fatherly voice that “work is supposed to be enjoyable.”  The end result was a wonderfully shoveled path.  Jacob did nothing notable.

Once the children went to school Rich and I went downtown to the coffee shop.  Rich dropped me off at the door and I said, “I’ll leave Sarah with you, you can manage her.”  He told me that as they drove away to park she asked her Dad nervously, “What does manage mean?”  I think she was afraid.  As I waited for them I almost took a chair away from the table to make way for a high chair!!!!!  Slowly it is dawning on me that I no longer HAVE babies, for the first time in 18 very busy years but apparently I still have some ingrained instincts.

The coffee shop always has artwork on the walls featuring a great variety of artists and their work.  This week it is nature photography and as I studied them, I thought, “I take better pictures than this.”  Some of them have sold, 200 dollars worth, in fact!  I know that sounds so prideful, but I don’t mean it that way, I mean it in this way, “I never thought about selling my photos but seeing these pictures sell makes me believe I could do it, too!”

I love the way Sarah turns her markers and crayons into people and tells stories makes up games with them.

“I used to live here at the camp road, but now I live here at the camp-camp-camp!”

“I like to hear your stories, Sarah.”

“Mom it’s not a story, it’s a game!  A coloring game!”

She’s also trying to figure out what we should do next.  So far she has come up with “play ground”  “thrifth store” “Barnes and Novel”  “Somebody’s house” or the “movies.”

I already drank all my coffee, it was a caramel latte.  Sarah requested a hot chocolate and Rich had a coconut caramel flavored coffee.

Sarah went outside to play the other day….she found the picnic table.

In spite of the rock in the middle I very sadly later found this pot saucer broken in the snow.

Caleb and Seth found their helmets which reminded them of a favorite activity, so they brought their bikes up out of the garage.  I love how Seth is holding the handle bars with his hands in his sleeves.  When you get stir-crazy enough you ride your bike even in frigid temperatures.

This was such a precious moment.  Jacob showed Emily his baby book for the first time.  The thought of him showing his girlfriend the book was not in my mind when I worked in it all those years ago.  I was 21 and smitten with my new baby, filling the pages with photos and milestones.  Emily enjoyed it and went home with a page photocopied out it.

Another winter activity!  Who knew that playing with Daddy’s tools would keep the little ones busy for over an hour?

Mike and Jacob played Phase 10.  That container on the bench is full of jelly beans, and the tissue box was never far from Jacob’s side as he dealt with his wretched cold.

We worked on a puzzle Saturday night while listening and singing along to iTunes.  (Grace, Zak, and Seth)

more snow!  (that blue speck is our newspaper down the road buried in the snow pile.) lol

All I did was go outside to get the paper and take a couple of pictures but two of the children worried and greeted me back in the house with, “MOM where did you go?  What are you doing?”

Sunday was awesome, I spent the morning with Jacob, Grace, David, and Sarah.  We went to church, then Wendy’s drive thru, we got the giggles in the car, drove to an antique store where I left them in the car eating while I quickly walked around looking at things (I bought some little gifts for my MOM, and three small fiesta plates for my collection; all vintage– gray, light green, and yellow).  We drove home and found Ethan and Seth back home from their wrestling event.  Ethan coached Seth to a 2nd place victory but Seth hung his head and was sad that he didn’t get first.  Then we were all together except Rich and Caleb, who were at States.  Caleb placed 7th out of 11 kids in his weight class.  (which is why he was so sore this morning).

Doesn’t it look as though Sherlock is smiling?

DSC_0881

Seth (not on purpose) made us so sad.   When I decided to write his name on all his wrestling medals I couldn’t find them.  He told me he took them to school and when his “friend” Bryce asked for them, Seth GAVE THEM to HIM (all but one!)  He gave away his metals!!  This situation is still being resolved.

Not happy about this.  Grace was doing her nails and put the nail polish remover-soaked paper towel directly on the coffee table!!!!!!!!!!  The remaining paper towel is stuck and dried in the table terribly!

Last night the bunny watched “Death comes to Pemberly” with Grace, Ethan, and me.

It was kind of boring.

Bunny scratched me and Grace, scared the cats, and bit some holes in the blanket.

I said, “Rich slow down by that house so I can get a picture of the ice.”

HE SPED UP. and then LAUGHED.

Rich took this picture from across the table.  He wanted me to see what he saw.  Our adorable little girlie, thrilled by the chocolate syrup drizzled on the top of her whipped cream and hot chocolate.
