I remember the first time we took baby Sarah to the ocean.  She crinkled up her eyes in disgust and would not put her hands down to touch the sand.

We took the children to the beach yesterday and five year old Sarah was busy enjoying herself the whole day long.  Digging in the sand, collecting every shell in sight, swimming even though the water was cold, playing with nearby little girls, twirling her new hula hoop.  We were there for six hours and she cried when we had to leave.

She loves the ocean.

grace’s new hair style

I’m sure you might feel the same as I do about Grace’s hair.

I loved it long, it was so beautiful.  She got several compliments on it from random strangers in the days leading up to her appointment.

But, she’s had long hair for years and she was feeling a desire for a change.  Also, her hair is fairly thin and to me it wasn’t looking as healthy as it used to.

She asked us if she could cut it and after thinking about it for at least a month or more, we agreed that it was time for her to chose a hair style and sit herself down in a hair salon.

Here is a “before” picture::

(the determined look)

The sweetest part of this story is that her Dad took her to the spa to get it done.  She had to go twice, once for the cut and the second time for the color (done today) and he took her both times.  He also made her an appointment to get her nails painted, too.

(He makes most of my hair appointments for me, as well, and loves it when I pamper myself.  It’s one of the ways that he enjoys showing his love for his wife and daughters.)

He spent lots of money on her and then she came home and got upset about FISH!  But it’s Rich’s fault entirely.  You don’t buy 80 live silver shiners and then release them into the pond to get EATEN ALIVE by bass and catfish right in front of your tender hearted daughters and expect them to be happy about it.

We had to wait until after lunch cheered her up again before we could do our little photo shoot.

The cut looks so cute on her and I love the subtle ombre.  She came up with this style on her own and it looks adorable.  She’s 15 and this is just the right time to say “yes” to harmless changes!

marvel: to be filled with wonder

DSC_0754

It was the perfect summer day full of small marvels.  Caleb went off with a fishing pole and his little sister followed him.  I was in the house with an illness….diagnosed as the “urge to clean”.  Eventually I worked it out and flew outdoors to try to clear the smell of bleach from my respiratory system.  Jacob and Ethan were cleaning the chicken coop.  I could hear Jacob happily whistling as he worked.  Caleb and Sarah were coming out of the woods and I walked to meet them.  They were on their way to see me with a present.

They had discovered a big, handsome wild mushroom.  They found it while they were looking for fishing bait.  I thought they were the sweetest children to think of me.  I went to get my camera so I could take a picture of it.   It was about 6 inches tall and weighed about 1.5 pounds.  We rarely see mushrooms this healthy.  The underneath was full of tunnels and I saw a glimpse of a very scared bug wondering how it’s large meal/home had been disturbed.

DSC_0757

DSC_0761
While I was studying the mushroom under a pine tree, Seth brought over a toad.

DSC_0765

Then they began to fish.

DSC_0766

But they didn’t catch anything.  Caleb said he thought it was because the fish were not hungry.

DSC_0769

Many hours later the children were outside making a fort in the woods.  I went to go check on them and do a little spying.  First I admired my newly cleaned coop and checked on my chicks, all of which are growing up nicely.  They still make their peeping sounds and are about half grown.  We let them spend the day outside in their fence now and then.  It takes some work on our part because they don’t voluntarily go back into the coop at dusk and we have to catch them and/or retrieve them from trees.

DSC_0774

I found Sarah and Seth talking in the stream.  Seth had gotten a sliver in his foot and was soaking it in the water.

DSC_0779

We went over to see how the fort was coming along.  The children were busy chopping and gathering suitable sticks.  They worked on it until supper time.  I left them to it and went up to the field by myself.

It is a wonderful place to see so many ordinary but (if you take a closer look) fascinating wild flowers and grasses, insects, butterflies, and birds.  This flower had heart shaped petals.  There was a bee on it with legs as golden as the flower, covered in pollen.

DSC_0792

This colorful insect that bore an uncanny resemblance to SpiderMan was on a milkweed plant.  As I bent to look closer, it scurried underneath the leaf of the milkweed to hide from me.  We played “chase” like this until I finally just slowly bent the plant over to take a picture.  It was fun.  Outsmarting an insect is so satisfying.  🙂

DSC_0795

DSC_0799

The white spot on this moth (?) is actually shiny silver.  Look at it’s eyes and antennae.  (if you click on the photo you can see it bigger).

DSC_0793

There were the most gorgeous orange butterflies.  But they were hyper-active.  They never landed.  How on earth do butterflies manage to not rip their wings as they fly around?  I decided to ignore them but all throughout my walk one would catch my eye and I would grieve that I couldn’t possibly get a good picture.  This one was the best I could do.  Do you see it?  I showed the picture to Grace and we laughed and laughed.  Caleb said it looked like a flying slug.  (He was traumatized by a slug when he used one for bait that morning.  He could not get the slug slime off his hands and it bothered him for hours..another nature marvel).

DSC_0804

I almost saw a snake, too.  As I walked over to the stream, something dropped down to the ground to slither away…I didn’t see it…but the grass was slithering as it traveled away.  I’m sure it was a large snake.  For the rest of the walk there were imaginary snakes everywhere I went.  There is always an element of creepiness when one walks in fields of tall thick grasses and flowers.

In my mind, I looked like this in the field:

Reality was quite different, but this is the cover of the book I am currently reading.  It is rocking my world.  I grew up reading the Little House books, in fact they were the first books I read myself as an 8 year old girl.  They are as known to me as my mother’s home cooked meals.

I found out yesterday that Pa GAVE JACK AWAY to the man who bought Pet and Patty!  He didn’t stay with Laura until he died like in the books!!!!!!!!!  They had another dog named Wolfie!!!!!!!!!!!!!   To find out more you’ll have to check the book out yourself.  Needless to say, I’m loving it while being mildly disturbed, and learning a lot about editing and writing one’s story as a piece of fiction based on truth.

waffle summer

This is fun.

DSC_0746

I love making breakfast for the children.  The best thing about summer vacation is that the extra time we have makes it possible to do so.  I’ve been making waffles.

I suppose it has something to do with the moment a few weeks back when my Mom and I were organizing my pantry and we discovered that one of the boys had put my waffle maker back with waffle stuck all over it.  It was shocking. I remembered the day years ago that Rich bought me that wonderful waffle maker from Williams and Sonoma.  I was so proud of it, but had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.  I immediately felt like nurturing my waffle maker again.  As soon as I had extra time again (days later), I took it outside and cleaned the crumbs out of it.  The dog was by my side, eating them out of the grass.  Waffle makers have the potential to be the filthiest appliance in the house if they aren’t perfectly cleaned after each use.  Even the cord itself was coated in old batter.  (I blame the boy who used it last.)

Of course once it was clean again I immediately wanted to use it.

DSC_0748

This morning I made cornmeal waffles from a Bed and Breakfast cookbook.  Before I mixed them up, I thinly sliced 2 quarts of strawberries into a fiesta bowl and sugared them.  The kids could put strawberries on their waffles, maple syrup, or both.

DSC_0750

Cornmeal Waffles
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cup milk
1 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons melted butter

In a large bowl beat the eggs and add the milk.  In a separate bowl combine the dry ingredients and store into the egg mixture.  Gradually add the melted butter.  Spoon into a greased hot waffle iron, and bake.

Notes:  I use one of those silicone pastry brushes to grease my waffle maker.  Also, I added extra flour to this recipe because I like waffle batter to be thick.

DSC_0752

When I made them, only Caleb, Seth, and Sarah were awake.  So all the rest are waiting in a 200 degree oven, waiting for the big kids to wake up and eat them.  Last week we had someone spending the night with the boys and he was so amazed that I had made waffles from scratch that he took a picture of the recipe.

(star wars and elsa)

I have something to say to you that has nothing to do with waffles!

God is Sovereign, is in perfect control of all things.
Jesus had harsh words for hypocrites.
Self-righteousness is a terrible attitude and scares people.
Strange and Unusual Joy is a mark of a Christian.
A key to a content life is purposefully living the one God gave you and enjoying each part of it.
Continuous study and learning…having a curiosity about life and living….is another way to grow in grace.
If you believe in the blessedness of marriage, put extra time and effort into your own.
At some point in the very near future all the children of God will experience the best happy ending in History….and I just cannot wait!!!!

“The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

JR Miller quote and moments from my week

DSC_0696

WRITTEN BY JR MILLER:

We cannot do what we desire to do. Many of our purposes are thwarted. We desire to do good and beautiful things, and we try — but our actual achievements fall far below our desires. Our clumsy hands cannot fashion the loveliness which our hearts dream of. Our faltering weakness cannot do the brave things our souls aspire to do. No artist ever paints on his canvas — all the beauty of his ideal. No singer ever expresses — all the music which burns within him as he sings. No eloquent orator ever utters — all that he feels as he pleads for truth or for justice.

IMG_0985

So in all our life — we do only a little of what we strive to do. We set out in the morning with purposes of usefulness, of true living, of gentle-heartedness, of patience, of victoriousness; but in the evening we find only little fragments of these good intentions actually wrought out!

DSC_0692

But God’s plans and intentions are all carried out!  No power can withstand Him — or frustrate His will. It was in this thought, that Job found peace in his long, sore trial: all things were in God’s hands, and nothing could hinder His designs of love!  Our God is infinitely strong.  In all earthly confusions, strifes, and troubles — His hand moves, bringing good out of evil for those who trust in Him. He executes all His purposes of good. He is never hindered in blessing His children.

Happy Friday, my friends!

yesterday……

…..we went to the park
…..Jacob and Ethan spent the day at a friend’s house
…..we took naps
…..we let the new flock of chickens go outside in their fence all day long
…..the kids swam in the pond
…..my kitty caught me a frog
…..I read my book
…..Rich spent the day at the park with work

and when he got home

he and the kids put together a new trampoline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daddy says life is such a crazy mess
He gotta jump on your chances for some happiness
We all see what daddy means
From way up here on this trampoline

DSC_0715

Rich is a quiet, orderly leader and teacher.  They had everything out of the boxes and lined up together.  The back of the truck had tools and the small pieces.  They played music from the truck radio as they worked.  It was a calm and pleasant work environment.

DSC_0716

Seth was begging me to play with him.  We played catch for quite a while.  Every time he had to chase the ball I did cartwheels.

DSC_0720

At one point Grace was busy with fitting the pipes together and Ethan was busy working on another section.  Emily and Jacob had nothing to do so they were fooling around….Grace reprimanded, “Why don’t you guys HELP ETHAN?”  There was a short pause before Emily retorted, “Why don’t we help YOU?”  Grace thought about it and said, “Point taken.”  The answer?  They don’t WANT HELP.

DSC_0722

The whole process took several hours.  At this point I was sitting on the back of the truck reading my book and keeping my eagle eye on them.  What a blessing to have a willing work crew.

DSC_0724

Almost done!

DSC_0727

Emily and Grace were the first to jump.  This was about 8pm last night.

DSC_0731

Then Caleb had a turn.

DSC_0732

This trampoline is a little smaller than our old one.  We had to take the old one down because we had it for so long it wasn’t as bouncy as it should be and the net was gone.  It was basically, in my humble mama’s opinion, an accident waiting to happen or perhaps even a death trap.  I begged Rich to take it down before Jacob’s party and he did…but he and the  kids were so sad that he ordered this new one the very same day.  It’s rectangle shaped and the net is secure all around the bottom, I can rest easy knowing that my babies are safe as they bounce.

DSC_0735

DSC_0739

Are you guys patient mamas at the end of the day?  I had to walk away after this picture because I was going crazy telling them exactly how to take turns, nagging them not touch the foam on the pipes (knowing if everyone pulls on it, it will eventually tear and rip) or the blue fabric, breaking up petty arguments “Mom Seth said he can jump better than meeeeeeeee.” and so on…I went in the house and said I was too tired to be a referee and Rich agreed that it was best for them to learn to work things out on their own.  So then I happily yelled about everything going on it the house, “Who left this bowl of leftover salad on the counter I am not a kitchen maid????”  “Someone please take out the garbage and don’t put it on the ground BY the can this time, I had to pick trash up this morning because someone didn’t take the tiny next step to put it in the can!!!!!!!!!!”

I’m just saying, we do have our limits.

DSC_0740

The trampoline was a job well done.  Caleb just asked me what we were doing today and the answer is:  JUMP.

MY SOUL IS IN THE SKY   WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

We were in the living room watching Shark Tank at about 8pm last night when Jacob jumped off the couch and said “Mom come outside and see the sky.”  It was so funny….everyone (five kids) in the living room followed him out the door in one big group, and I brought up the rear.

All day long we had been hearing about the possibility of a storm and a slim chance of a tornado.  It was a humid, hot and sticky day as we watched and hoped the skies would break to bring in some coolness.

I am so thankful it held off until the end…the lighting was stunning..moody..powerful.

Large drops of rain began to fall, one by one.  The girls looked up at the sky.  “Ow!  A drop of rain just hit me in my OPEN EYE!” Emily cried as we laughed.

Once the thunder began and rain started coming down in a torrent we all went up on the porch to watch.  We ran inside after one particularly loud lightening strike and saw the dog trotting briskly around the house in fear.

Then David, Emily, Jacob, and Grace went right back out to sit until the sky was too dark to see anymore.

thirsty?

DSC_0669

I’ve been pondering my hydrangea bush.  I counted 25 blooms on it this morning as I leaned over the porch railing.

This summer is the first time it has bloomed…..in years.

It bugged me a great deal to see it year after year, all green with none of those big puffy flowers that are so beautiful.  I did a little research about hydrangeas this spring and guess what the solution was?

Water.  Lots and lots of water.  Therefore, I’ve been watering this plant religiously day after day.

DSC_0672

It just simply needed water.

DSC_0674

As a believer, I can’t help but compare this plant and it’s need for water in order to bloom to my soul and how much I need Jesus, Water from the Rock.  I also need His Word, the Bible.  I need church services, I need prayer, I need spiritual songs, I need to praise and worship, I need to meditate.  Another way to say “need” is to say “thirst”.  I thirst for these things…..and as I drink deep they satisfy my soul.

Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled.

If I neglect these spiritual disciplines, I won’t flourish and grow.  I’ll still be alive, but I’ll be stagnant.  I’ll still be HIS, because nothing can ever take me from His strong hand, but life will lose some of it’s beauty, it’s peace, it’s abundance if I’m not drinking long and deep from the streams of living water.  I thank God for the thirst He gives me that causes me run to him.

Let but your heart become a valley low,
And God will rain on it till it will overflow.

Grace wants to be like Beatrix Potter.  She came downstairs for breakfast with these things in her hands….sketch book, drawing pencils, her latest paperback, and a horse (her model for the drawings)….I encouraged her to try to be HERSELF and not a copy of an original.  “I don’t know how.”  I can so relate.  We live in a world that is full of information and great ideas, it’s hard to even know who we are in the midst of so many people.  Well, we do have similarities, but God made us unique and different, too.  The little something he gave to Beatrix Potter is apparently within my daughter, too.  We’ll see what she does with it.

DSC_0692

Speaking of growing, Sarah is steadying gaining new marks on her growth line.  I do need to wash this wall a little though.

Conversation during Waffle-Making:

David, chewing on waffle:  “I wonder if we’ll ever get a new baby.”
Me: making waffles with my back toward him:  “Um.No, the baby factory is closed.  The baby factory is tired.”
David, finding my answer unsatisfactory:  “Hmmf.  Just think of all the babies that will never be born because YOU do not have the COURAGE to have them.”

Look up today, you who are dried and withered plants.  Open your leaves and flowers and receive God’s heavenly watering.  Charles H. Spurgeon

Jacob, day 1: a special day for a first year

There is something about watering a garden with buckets of water from the pond (because the hose doesn’t work) throughout a dry spring to make a woman deep down grateful to wake up to a fresh morning of drenching rain.  If I close my eyes, I can almost see the water trickling down-down-down into the dry earth.  I can almost imagine the rate of growth on the next sunny day in our small vegetable patch.  How satisfying it is to be a part of all that is happening outside.

Meanwhile, inside the house this morning I have been busy cleaning and thought I would take a break to type up a little blog post.  This will start  a week of my oldest son Jacob as the main subject of this little corner of the internet.

Yes, this is Jacob’s week, with so many blessings unfolding for him.  It really all began on Friday when he went to the store to do this:

IMG_0486

Yes indeedy, he gave gifts to his sweetheart to mark their  anniversary.  One year ago he and Emily started their relationship, and such a sweet couple they make.  In fact, they are currently both on the couch watching “International House Hunters” right now.  🙂

Their anniversary was Friday and we planned a beach day for Saturday.  Rich was gone last week on business so I was a bit on the *worn to a frazzle* side.  He would not have minded making it a family day but I asked him if we could leave six of the children home and just take Jacob and Emily.  It was a most brilliant idea…the whole day from start to finish was wonderful.

(I just had to leave and come back from the school.  Ethan and Grace are now home after a morning of finals).

IMG_0519

We went to Panera for breakfast.  Everyone was happy and goofy, including my husband.   It was nice to see him relaxed and enjoying a day off from work.  After breakfast we continued to the shore.  We arrived at about 8:30 in the morning.

IMG_0522

That’s Jacob and Emily making a sandcastle together.

IMG_0524

I sat in the beach chair for a while reading magazines.  It was such a treat to relax and not have to worry about children wandering off or getting pulled into the ocean.

IMG_0526

The finished sandcastle.

Rich and I went on a walk down the beach.  The water was cold but the weather was lovely, warm with a cool breeze.  The sun didn’t start blazing down on us until later on.

We dozed in the sunshine….again, I was so grateful to just melt into the towel, knowing that there was no one that needed to be watched.

We took a foursome selfie before we left the beach for lunch.

So thankful to have kids who enjoy being with us!

what would the wise woman do?

IMG_0485(i took this picture while flat on my back)

I ask myself this hypothetical question often, “What would the Wise Woman do?” and I asked it this morning after dropping a child off at school for a final exam.  I would have to return to the school after 2 hours to pick him back up.

I like to pretend that the wise woman is my Mom, my Grandma, or my dearest friend.  What would they tell me to do when faced with a certain decision?   Somehow it makes it easier to find the right thing to do when imagining what they would do.

I felt depleted physically and run down mentally, from days of rushed activity.  So I asked myself.

What would the wise woman do with two hours?

She would drive into town for a favorite drink and an apple juice for the preschooler, find a quiet table near the window and sit for as long as she wanted.

She would write a list of  thankfulness with a pen on a paper napkin.

She would say “yes” to walking to the empty park nearby.

She would lay back in the grass under a bright blue sky and let the hot sunshine melt away that sinus headache and listen to the birds and her little daughter singing as she played.

She would loiter everywhere she walked…slowly…taking everything in.

Sh would really taste that iced chai tea, down to the last drop.

That’s what the wise woman told me to do.  And that’s what I did.  Thank you, wise woman!
