God’s earth day

“….He did good by giving you

rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,

satisfying your hearts

with food

and gladness.”  Acts 14:17

Earth day.  A day to thank God over and over for this amazing created world that He made from words….beginning with these….”and God said…let there be light, and there was light.” Genesis 1:3

LIGHT is my personal word to study and meditate on this year.  Every year in January I wait for the Lord to impress upon my mind and soul a particular word (it’s so much easier that way).  LIGHT came to mind and wouldn’t go away, so LIGHT it was.  And let me assure you, the study has been marvelous so far.  The Bible and Christian resources, books, hymns, are full of this wonderful word.

The Light of the World is Jesus

The whole world was lost
In the darkness of sin,
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Like sunshine at noonday,
His glory shone in.
The Light of the world is Jesus!

No darkness have we
Who in Jesus abide;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
We walk in the light
When we follow our Guide!
The Light of the world is Jesus!

Ye dwellers in darkness
With sin blinded eyes,
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Go, wash, at His bidding,
And light will arise.
The Light of the world is Jesus!

No need of the sunlight
In Heaven we’re told;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
The Lamb is the Light
In the city of gold,
The Light of the world is Jesus!

CHORUS:

Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee;
Sweetly the light has dawned upon me.
Once I was blind, but now I can see:
The Light of the world is Jesus!

It’s nice to sing “The light of the world is” and then point to your child and let them sing “JESUS!”

Before I remembered that it was in fact Earth day, Sarah and I meandered our way outdoors and found a pair of mallard ducks in the stream.  They come every year at this time so we are old friends, however they are always shy of us.  We sat by the edge of the stream in the sunshine and tried to be still and quiet.  Sarah had a very hard time with the quiet part.

“I want to be a duck.”
“Everybody should be ducks, right mom?”
“I’m the girl duck.”
“Mom look at this stick!  Can I pick it?”
“I don’t like dirt.”
“I hear a plane.”
“Where are my ponies??”  (she was carrying around My Little Ponies)
“Mom, there’s a spider on you.”
“Let’s sit here and wait until they swim in the pipe.  Can I go through the pipe sometime?  Seth went through the pipe.  I want to go through the pipe.”
“Can I throw this stick in the water?”

DSC_2017

Sherlock our cat was watching them with us.

DSC_2022

Look how funny they are with their bottoms up in the air at the same time.  Notice the pipes, we waited and waited and in fact they looked as if they really would take the tunnel through to the other side of the road.  But do you know what those silly ducks did?  They got out of the stream and waddled across up on the road, on dry land.  First the Male went, waiting and looking carefully for cars, and then walking softly and throwing himself in the stream on the other side.  The Female slowly went up the bank and stood there nervously until her mate started quacking in impatience.  Only then did she rouse herself and cross.  “Ker plop” we heard her join her husband.  Sarah and tiptoed over to see.

DSC_2026

Man duck stood proudly on a rock, the lady duck was there, but hidden in the water.  She seemed to enjoy the faster water and would go completely under.  Soon our motions made them nervous and up they flew.

flying duck

They flew all the way over to the pond, so we followed them again.  Parker the dog was barking at them, too.

pond ducks

I got comfortable on the dock in the sunshine while Sarah climbed pine trees.  I saw a pair of cardinals and some other little birds.

DSC_2036

It was getting to be lunch time so Sarah and I went over to see if there were eggs before going in the house for lunch.

billy

There were two lovely smooth eggs, I put one in each jacket pocket.  Billy came over to say hello.

violet

And we saw the first of the violets.  For all the February babies like myself and friend Cynthia.

“He himself gives to all mankind life life and breath and everything.  And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God,  in the hope that they might feel their way toward Him and find Him.  Yet He is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.”  Acts 17:26

recovering!

DSC_1942

Good morning!  I was awakened this morning by Jacob knocking at my door at 6:21 in the morning because I had promised to write him a check for seventy dollars for the prom.  As soon as I stood up, the all too familiar chills and flu headache appeared.  I wrote the check and tortured myself by stumbling back to bed even though I knew I couldn’t sleep anymore…I had to wake up Seth and Caleb.

So here it is several hours later.  The smell of roasting chicken is in the air, as I am getting a head start on dinner later which will be Chicken Divan.  Little Sarah is pattering about upstairs getting dressed.

DSC_1944

I was sick an entire week and indeed, I am not yet quite well.

However, God is to be praised and glorified because He delights in caring for His precious children and I felt his love so much over the last week.  Rich had a business trip from Tuesday to Thursday and I was so sick I had to send out a distress call over Facebook.  My friends came through for me in such generous ways!  By eight that morning four of the children were taken away……Caleb and Seth to my friend Diana’s house, and Grace and Sarah to my friend Heather’s.  And each of these ladies had four children of their own at home, too, not to mention one year old baby boys.  Heather took the girls to the Science center and gave me a candle, card, and jelly beans (which I gave to Jacob to take with him to his track meet).  Diana had the boys spend the night and when she brought them back she also gave us dinner.  Which reminds me, I really need her bread recipe.

My friend Barb came over with essential oils and took the boys to their orthodontist appointment.  She bought me a box of tissues.

DSC_2005

I carry the baggie of oils around with me, they are so very therapeutic!  My sense of smell is returning!

DSC_1945

Last Monday for whatever reason I very dumbly decided to go for a walk with the children.  My only excuse is that I had taken three ibuprofen and felt that I was getting better (oh how I laugh now) …. anyway, the reason I went was because Grace came to me and said, “Mom, I thought I heard ducks but it was really frogs.  They’re back.”  Namely, Spring Fever.

The happy frogs were down by the rushing stream in a quieter tributary, laying eggs.  I’m not sure what type of frog they were, they were NOT the bullfrogs.  Once we were that far, we decided to keep on going and walk up the dam trail.

DSC_1948

David was jumping on the trampoline being unsociable and Ethan was at practice, so it was Jacob, Emily, Grace, Caleb, Seth, and Sarah.

DSC_1951

Jacob shot a tree with an air-soft gun (I know, this was bad of him) and we all ran over to taste the sap.  He looked around for a Maple tree but could not find one.

DSC_1955

It was a little cold for Sarah so Jacob and Emily left with her and Seth.  They also had bare feet and the grass was hurting them.  Grace, Caleb, and I continued to the old beaver pond in the woods to search out some more frog activity.

DSC_1957

We saw a new bird species as we entered the woods by a tiny stream.  We didn’t notice it at all until we were almost upon it, it was so well camouflaged. The pictures I took are truly pitiable.  If you lean in very close to the computer screen you can see it…a small bird about the size of a bantam hen, with an upturned tail, black eyes, and long beak.

DSC_1958

You may have to take my word for it.  It flew away reluctantly in three brief flights; the third one being the last attempt we made to “get a little closer”.  I looked it up later on and decided it was perhaps a Water Rail.

DSC_1961

We sat down by the beaver pond to watch the frogs.  Grace was right next to me.  She had bare feet and said, “What in the world is under my toes.”  It turned out to be a tiny tree frog.  Then, she climbed a tree and just as she settled in the branches she saw a red spider.   Nature loves Grace.

Walking with boys ALWAYS involves a few battles with sticks.

DSC_1972

Heading home.  Caleb was our silent third party while Grace and I chatted and laughed all the while…….

DSC_1974

When I got home I decided to open the last bottle of blackberry/sage Kombucha.  It opened like a shot and Kombucha pulp sprayed all over the ceiling.  I had to walk around on the island with clorox wipes to clean it off.  If the cork wasn’t held on to the bottle by metal hardware I would be typing this blog post with only one eye.

DSC_1977

I never even drank it.  I could not taste it and couldn’t be sure that it wasn’t spoiled.  I’m sure it wasn’t, but after cleaning up all the pulp I lost my appetite for it.  It sure got fizzy, right?

After Monday I didn’t pick up my camera again for four days (this is impressive for me).    I did have my phone so I took a few pictures with it:

IMG_0004

I was in the cupboard trying to find something to snack on when Grace saw the word flu.  We had to laugh at the irony.

Jacob and David, I’m so proud of these sons of mine.

On Sunday I thought I saw the football down by the pond but then realized it was a Muskrat of all things.  It sat at the edge for a while, I think it was eating, sometimes the force of it’s digging made its long tail come out of the water.

Lastly, I took this picture of Rich reading to our youngest two last night before bed.

*******

I have two book recommendations for you, if you are interested.  The first is titled A Room with  View, written in 1908 by Edward Morgan Forster.  It’s a free download on the Kindle.  After you read it you can watch the lovely movie adaptation.

The second book is one that I am currently reading.  It was written by a Romanian Lutheran pastor who was imprisoned for 14 years of his life in different prisons because of his Christian belief.  It’s titled In God’s Underground and was written by Richard Wurmbrand and is a one dollar book on Kindle.  Here is a quote:

“The prison years did not seem too long for me, for I discovered, alone in my cell, that beyond belief and love there is a delight in God:  a deep and extraordinary ecstasy of happiness that is like nothing in this world.  And when I came out of jail I was like someone who comes down from a mountaintop where he has seen for miles around the peace and beauty of the countryside, and now returns to the plain.”

That’s not to say that he did not experience satanic temptations, torture, and deathly illness, because he did.  But in the midst of it all he experienced over and over again God’s amazing sustenance.  What a beautiful testimony this book is and I think EVERY Christian should read it to get yet another idea of how awesome God is, and what is available to us as believers.

Here is just one more quote and then I will close this post for the day.

“Words alone have never been able to say what man feels in the nearness of divinity.  Sometimes I was so filled with joy that I felt I would burst if I did not give it expression.  I remembered the words of Jesus, ‘Blessed are you when men come to hate you, when they exclude you from their company and reproach you and cast out your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.  Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!’   I told myself, ‘I’ve carried out only half this command.  I’ve rejoiced, but that is not enough.  Jesus clearly says that we must also leap.’

“When next the guard peered through the spy-hole, he saw me springing about my cell.”

Dance for Jesus today, my friends!  Rejoice and leap for joy!

{this moment} home life

Rich and I were on the couch, I was resting my head against his shoulder and listening to the beautiful sound of my children singing together in the other room…..I never dreamed I would be sick this long (this is the 6th day).   I am very sleepy and weak.  It took much strength this morning just to take this video of Grace and Ethan singing….such is the pull of music.

greetings from the sick house

DSC_1916

Saturday.  Myriah’s last day with us.  Oh how we enjoyed having this beautiful girl stay with us during her spring break.  She fit right into the family…we had such fun.  My favorite memory of her visit was her genuine interest in our family photos.  We spent a cozy afternoon looking at hundreds of pictures together, she would take her phone out and take pictures of her favorites.

DSC_1914

Mitch brought Ethan home from baseball practice and the kids played some basketball together on the driveway.

DSC_1922

Sunday.  I was unfortunately coming down with the flu.  Remember how I wrote the other day about Grace being sick?  We took her to the docs again on Saturday and she was tested for flu and it was positive.  So that’s what we are dealing with here.  I have spent most of the last two days in bed.  Yesterday was  my personal first day of sickness and it wasn’t as bad as today has been….the weather was absolutely gorgeous so I ventured outside now and then.  I just had to see what the kids were up to.  Emily and Jacob were in their own little world in the canoe, determined to break up the last of the ice on the little pond.  I sat on the dock to watch and be amused.

Look who joined me after she woke up from her nap.

DSC_1924

She adores Emily and said to me, “Let’s just sit here and watch Emily until she gets back out of the boat.”  You know what else she did?  She asked me if she could make a wish with a rock.  I said no, only with a penny.  So when Emily did get back out of the boat, she gave Sarah a penny to throw in the pond to make a wish.  She wished for “a cat pet” of her own.  She is still wondering today when it will come true.

DSC_1926

Soon Ethan appeared.  He got his first phone on Saturday…. a rite of passage for today’s teen.

DSC_1928

Emily and Jacob moved to the other pond for more canoeing.

DSC_1932

I was thrilled when Rich pointed out this butterfly to me.  It was glorious to see, I love how it looks like it is truly edged in gold….and those beautiful blue spots along the wings.  So masterfully designed in every way.

DSC_1933

Seth played catch with anyone he could possible get to play with him.  At one point we had five children all playing…I had to move back out of fear of getting hit by the ball.

DSC_1936

This morning was rough.  After a terrible night’s sleep I got up to get some tea and almost passed out.  I broke out in a cold sweat, turned white, and was sick to my stomach.  Rich was getting ready for work and I asked him if he could please stay home….the children are on spring break and I didn’t know how I could care for them properly.  He graciously agreed and was able to take the boys to practice, go to the store, he bought the little boys a whiffle ball set which kept them busy outside….although I am sick it has been a wonderful day.  The best part of being temporarily sick is the blessing of slowing down.  Looking around the room.  Listening to the conversations. Having people come in to visit me.  Having the dog lay on the floor next to my bed, faithfully.  The cat giving itself a bath at my feet.  Reading a book.

The picture is something Grace drew for me today, I asked her to add a verse and now it’s by my side of the bed on my nightstand.  Along with all my drinks and vaseline for my dry lips.

There is the nicest cat curled up at the end of the bed.

Jacob is making dinner tonight; maple salmon and broccoli.  It smells so good.  The windows in my bedroom are all open for nice cool air.  The children have run wild today and it’s been so good for them to spend most of the day outside.  Seth crashed about half an hour ago on the couch, he’s sound asleep at Ethan’s feet.

Ethan’s getting sick now, poor boy.

two sleeping brothers…..

This morning began in the middle of the night when Sarah knocked politely at our door.  I opened it to hear her request, “Can I sleep on the couch?”  She was still sick.  When my children aren’t feeling well they sleep on the couch.  When my children are bothered by their siblings, they sleep on the couch.  When my children are watching a show on TV they will periodically fall asleep on the couch, especially the teenagers.  If you are in the market to buy a couch, by all means, make sure it is one that is comfortable enough to also be a bed!

At the true beginning of the day, as is typical, I got up to drink that first cuppa, and get the children off to school.  Sarah’s face was hot with fever, so as soon as the children left for the day, I gathered up my journals, books, drink for Sarah, cool washcloth for Sarah, and settled down to spend the entire morning next to her.  When she’s sick she feels so much better with me close by.

I finished writing a note to a friend, addressed it, stamped it, and the phone rang.  It was 7:30 in the morning and the school nurse was calling to let me know that Grace was in her office, with problems with dizziness.  She said it had happened the night before as well, so I quickly woke up Myriah (our lovely houseguest for the week) to watch Sarah for me and pulled on my sneakers to get Grace.

These headaches/dizziness/vision issues have been going on for several years.  They happen probably about once a month, but Grace’s concern has been growing to the point of firm belief that something was surely WRONG with her.  I understood her concern but truly believed that she was wearing herself out with her hard work ethic at school and not drinking enough water.  But, because she was concerned (calm, but worried) and her teacher and friends were very concerned, I felt that I must get her checked out.  We went to the ER so she could have blood drawn and we could receive the answers right then and there.  There was a chance of perhaps a vitamin deficiency, too.  We have a small hospital nearby and in just a few hours Grace had the tests done, and a bag of fluids, as well.

Everything came back normal, praise the Lord, and we came home just thankful to know that it was a simple matter of dehydration and that it is unfortunately just her body’s way of dealing with stress, with headaches.  Poor girl.  I have a friend who gets terrible stomach aches when she’s overwhelmed.  I myself get a little loopy/mental/anxious.  One of my brothers gets heart palpitations.  My daughter gets headaches.  It is an ongoing valuable lesson for her in learning how to take care of herself BEFORE she gets sick.  Oh but guess what?  The nurse found out that Grace wants to work with the deaf after she graduates and low and behold she herself used to be a school nurse AT A LOCAL school for the deaf!!  She said, “Oh they would just LOVE you!  You should go and volunteer!  Tell ‘so and so’ that Nurse Sarah sent you!”  So God gave Grace that encouraging bit of information to go home with, too.

We came home, I held Sarah in my arms, and we all watched “Little Women”, the one with Wynona Ryder in it.  Myriah was disturbed by Jo’s final choice in love…..he seemed much too old for Jo, in her opinion.  But all in all, it was a great movie.  I myself have seen it about 10 times.  It’s perfect.

After the movie was over I drove through the cold bitter rain to pick Dave up from newspaper club.  Since it was soon time for Jacob to be done at track practice, we went to the library to wait for his call.  I checked out two Anne Lamott books, based on my friend Lea Ann’s recent recommendations, and two books for Grace.

We picked up Jacob and made our way home.  I was so very tired…..I started making enchiladas until I realized I didn’t have nearly enough cheddar cheese, so I put the ground beef (cooked) back in the fridge and made chicken instead.

After eating, we all sat on the couch and watched Phineas and Ferb until Myriah had to leave with friends.

Caleb and Seth went downstairs to play.

David made a gun that really and truly shoots — out of Legos — and started making a mask out of an empty gallon jug and paper mache.

Rich came home around 6:30 and I sat at the counter with him as he ate.

At 7 we watched Jeopardy while Grace read her book, the boys slept, Caleb worked on his football cards, and Seth colored.

When Seth was done coloring, he got up in my lap and let out a series of complaints until bedtime, which came a lot quicker because if it.  He didn’t want to go to school.  He needed a break.  He wanted basketball cards of his own.  He didn’t want to go to bed by himself.  He DID want to go to bed by himself.  The poor boy was exhausted, so Rich got him all ready and tucked him in.

Sarah filled her arms with stuffed animals and asked me to tuck her in.  For whatever reason she does not like her Dad doing it.  At this point she goes to bed with about 10 stuffed animals, all as special as can be.  I made up a silly song, pretending to be the Choir of Stuffed Animals singing a song to Sarah, and she laughed.

The guys are awake now and playing their video game with Rich.  I decided to blog before bed and simply record the day.

Caleb is obsessed with football and football cards nowadays.

DSC_1857

Caleb is nine and just started his card collection 2 weeks ago.   Seth is six and now begging to collect basketball cards but I am saying no for now because “you can’t read very well yet”.  You see, most of the fun Caleb has with his cards is reading and studying them…..Seth doesn’t agree with me, and took matters into his own hands by starting a card collection OF HIS OWN ARTISTIC CREATION.  Adorable.

Grace is moving right along with her book, she was especially thrilled to discover that the main boy character is a wrestler (like her brothers).  She read part of it out loud to us.  She has had quite the day but is feeling so much better, although her arms hurt.  They had to stick her twice to get the IV in.

I’ve been stimulated enough by my family for one day so I’m all alone, ready to open up a book and fall asleep while reading it.

Peace, love, joy, and prayers to anyone who reads this!   I would love to hear from you in the comments!

jacob and emily got engaged again! (*not really*)

DSC_1828

Ah, young love in the springtime, is there anything better?

We were all outside and I was reading my book when Emily ran up to me all excited.   Jacob proposed to her!  This is his second proposal.  The first one took place at the mall with a peach ring candy!

DSC_1829

Don’t you agree that this ring is much better than a peach ring (which Emily ate)?

Jacob found it embedded in the mud outside on the lawn!  Hard to believe, right?

It’s beautiful silver, heavy and well made, with a gentle rust design.  Quite artsy.

I congratulated her over and over.

easter 2015

DSC_1102

Glorious Easter!  The day all the world is reminded of the amazing hope we have, because of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ dying on the cross and *not staying dead* but rising again the third day.  Up from the grave He arose!  And because He lives, I can face tomorrow.  Because He lives, I can also live forever and ever……. and someday soon, because life is short, I will see Him, and know Him, and be home.  Oh I can’t wait for that day….that “can’t wait” feeling is HOPE, glorious resurrection hope.  Thank you, Jesus.

I woke up this morning at 6 and found Jacob frying himself some eggs, Davy ready to chat with me, and Grace sick to her stomach but saying she was fine and going to school regardless. (She is way too responsible for her own good.)  I served cereal, started the dishwasher, started a load of laundry, folded three loads of it at the couch, drank coffee, made myself a couple of eggs and shared them with Seth, gathered up homework and bags for the elementary school boys, and sent five children off to school.

I’m still in my pj’s, feeling rather sleepy, I’m in bed with Miss Sarah.  We are under the down comforter and she’s snuggled up close enough so I can play with her hair, she’s sucking her finger and feeling the tag on her new stuffed animal.  It’s cozy with my little sunshine girl, listening to the washer and dryer hum.

I found this old snapshot of the kids, taken in our old neighborhood.  Caleb was a baby and not in the photo.  Grace is wearing her flower girl dress and Jake and E are dressed exactly the same, and standing exactly the same, too.  Little Davy has such a sweet smile on his face.  Isn’t it funny how a simple picture can make a person happy and sad at the same time?  I remember how Grace, at this age, used to hate getting sun in her eyes, and was very sensitive about outdoor photography, you can see it in her face in this picture, too.

They are growing up but Grace wore a white dress again this year.

Thank you to Mike for taking these portraits yesterday morning before church.

Grace Sarah Easter 15

We went to church….I can’t think of a better day to attend a church service….and then when we came back home we didn’t eat a ham dinner.

We ate pizza!

DSC_1809

Here is a photo of all my children yesterday when we got back home.  I wouldn’t let them in the house until I took a picture of them all….my own offspring plus Jacob’s girlfriend Emily (red sweater), and Myriah (white jacket), a young family friend who lives in Virginia and came to visit us during her spring break.  She will be here all week.

DSC_1772

I spent five dollars on the actual baskets from our local thrift store, and I put jelly bean filled eggs in each one, with a gift.  I accidentally bought two bags of very SOUR jelly beans but the children still liked them.  Seth had matchbox cars, David and Caleb had sticky bugs that they could shoot with their finger at the windows, Sarah had a stuffed animal, and the older teens each received a pair of new socks.  Simple, but enough to keep them all excited about the day.

We had my sister’s dog-baby all weekend, too.  His name is Lloyd and he is a labradoodle.  Isn’t he adorable?  Rich called him Rug and told me that Rug looked just like me what with the brown curls.  He was a lot of fun to have in the house with us, such a cute puppy.  David was the one in charge of him, while Uncle Jason and Aunt Amanda were away for Easter.  He is back home now and Seth asked me if we could please get a rug.

DSC_1814

Emily had Easter dinner at her grandparent’s house and took Caleb with her (heart melts).  The rest of us made homemade pizza……

DSC_1815

It was non-stop activity in the kitchen for a long time as I made a ton of pizza dough and the kids each made a pizza of their own.  Jacob was a slow perfectionist over his pizza, causing great amusement, but his hard work paid off because YUM YUM it was good.  Myriah made a pizza for the first time and did so good, it was amusing to see her press the dough around on the oily pan trying not to touch it with her long fingernails.  Grace made a pizza with salami as a topping and she used cookie cutters to make the salami pretty.  Seth made a crazy-shaped stuffed crust pizza that was thin on one side and thick on the other.  Ethan and David each chopped up their own fresh garlic and made clam pizzas.  It was awesome.

DSC_1817

We cleaned up the kitchen and then watched a movie.  Some of the kids fell asleep and the rest of us went outside after the movie was done, to get some fresh air.  By the way, it snowed yesterday.  But spring is coming and there are signs of it everywhere, it’s just very late this year.

1 John 4:9-11  In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Zephaniah 3:17  The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

1 John 3:1  See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Proverbs 8:17  I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Hebrews 12:28-29  Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.

have a beautiful, blessed Easter weekend, my friends.

We are loved more than we could ever fathom.
