new clothes=mommy takes pictures

Last night I went out shopping.  I am not one for “retail therapy” LOL but it sure felt nice to walk around the mall by myself.  I even ate at Panera. . by myself. . .while reading a magazine.  If I’m alone I can’t just sit and eat, it feels too strange.  So I read, which never feels strange.  I got some great deals on clothes for the kids, found some remaining winter clearance specials. . .got Grace two long sleeved Land’s End dresses (size 10) for only 5.99 each.  And I also paid that same price for a pair of pants for Jacob (size 14!!).  I went to The Children’s Place and bought the boys each matching shirts.  It’s just too fun to do that now and then (at least I think so) . . . . . .

DSC_9222

I also bought Caleb the cutest pair of green pants.  They make me laugh. . David already had a pair that used to be Ethan’s.

This next one is my favorite.  I was sitting on the kitchen floor earlier and Caleb came to me.  I gave him a hug and a kiss and he said, “And my feet!” and held up a foot for me to kiss.  I’ve trained him well!  So when I look at this picture I want to kiss his feet again. . . .

I am feeling very tired right now.  I could even use the word “weak” even though I don’t want to.  I wonder what is the matter with me. . .I felt fine this morning.  I guess I’ll go eat some lunch and see if that helps.  I’ll probably go crash on the couch for a while.

When I look at the pictures I just took it doesn’t seem strange that I would feel so tired out at times.

Attached is a link to the most wonderful set of DVD’s.  I bought them  at Costco for much cheaper than amazon.  I highly recommend them, they are so wholesome and fun.  Ethan and I clap after every episode and I often shed a tear or two. . . .we all love watching, including Rich.

Okay. . . I need food and couch.

first day of shorts. . .and swimming?!

DSC_9187

It is so mild outside today!  At about 3:00, while Caleb was napping, I went out with a blanket to look at a catalogue.  Soon Grace came and joined me.  We had about 10 minutes of relaxation time until the boys started gathering around.

DSC_9192

They were wearing shorts for the first time this season.  As soon as Grace saw them she got up and ran to the house. . . .  “I don’t have any shorts so I’m wearing Ethan’s”, she explained when she got back.  Hmmmmmm. . . . . .okay, cute actually!

DSC_9194

Next thing I knew, they were all wading in the pond.  And then Grace plunged in.  I could not believe my eyes.

If you squint and look in the middle of the picture, you will see her swimming!

DSC_9199

DSC_9202

She had to run to the house to get into a hot bath.  Then I decided to dare Ethan to jump in.  He paced around, considering.  He would get near the water, then walk away.  Finally I said, “Hurry up E, my camera battery is going to die!!”  When he realized I would be taking pictures of him he said, “Oh alright!  This will be a great picture!”  That’s my boy!

To give you an idea of how crazy this is. . .the kids were outside this morning in winter coats.

Ethan did not even hesitate.  He got right out of the water and ran non-stop to the house to get into the other bathtub!  And next came Davy-do.  I hadn’t realized that he was up at the house, finding a life jacket.  I tried to talk him out of swimming, but he insisted.

Jacob looked on in amusement.  He would NOT join in the “fun”.  *sigh*  I guess one of my children actually has grown into some common sense.  David thought the water was too cold and I thought he was so precious when he sat down on the edge of the pond and said, “I’m gonna wait until it gets warmer”.   He doesn’t realize that it takes a long time for a pond to warm up.

DSC_9215

I did some cartwheels outside in the grass and helped Grace with hers.

David and Grace planted seeds.

I have lots of things growing, but I’m mostly excited about the rhubarb.  My goal is to actually bake with it this spring!  Last year I just never got around to it.  And the year before that we didn’t live here.

I found an awesome skirt in the Eddie Bauer catalogue that I really want.  It’s not on sale yet though.  We’re going to FL at the end of the month and it’s giving me the urge to get a couple new things for summer.

We had a rough day yesterday so today I was determined to have a better day (of homeschooling).  Today I separated the kids (rather than all of us sitting at the table).  We were still all in the same room but they each sat in a different desk/spot.  We did devotions together and then they each had a list that I wrote of their daily assignments.  They knew they had to do everything on their list by themselves.  If they needed help they had to ask me for it, but if they knew what to do than they had to go ahead and just do it.  In other words, they were much more independent today.  There was a lot less talking going on which was great.  I didn’t do any preschool work with David.

Other than school work, we’ve spent most of the day outside.  It’s been so nice to feel the warm sun.

Thank for the input on yesterday’s post.  I was/am so blessed by all of your comments.  I’ve heard a lot of great feedback from it.  I can’t wait until next question!

How are things with all of you?

dear older lady (question 1) “discreet and chaste”

“But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:  that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.  The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

Titus 2:1-5

Good morning!  Last week I sent out a message to all my xanga subscribers about an idea I had for my blog.  I don’t know about you, but there are times when I want to ask an “older lady” a question about spiritual things, or even life and family.  I have met so many amazing Christian women on xanga and I thought it would be profitable to get all of our minds working on these ideas.  I asked women to send me questions that they would like to have answered by an “older lady”, based on Titus 2.

I had a great time reading all of your responses, and learned right away that we are all interested in receiving information from older ladies, even the “older ladies”!  In other words, perhaps we are all younger ladies and older ladies!  Life is made up of stages. . .for instance. . right now I am a 32 year old mother of 5. . .but 10 years ago I was a mother of 2 small toddlers.  In 10 years, in a blink of an eye, I grew and changed (by the grace of God).  That’s the way life is.  Isn’t it wonderful that God designed the fellowship of believers in such a way that we can help, teach, and encourage one another?

Let me say a word on attitudes.  My blog is a safe place for precious friends to visit.  My desire is to have lots and lots of interaction with these “older lady” questions.  But we also need to beg God for humility and wisdom as we share our thoughts and ideas.  Ugly Pride is not welcome here. . .but I understand that we all deal with prideful thoughts.  Just last night I had to beg God for forgiveness because I felt ugly pride against another person.  The wonderful mercy of God cleansed and forgave my soul right away.  And that is what we can do here, pray over our comments and ask God to shine His love through them, and be ever watchful over our own hearts and keep them clean before Him.  Let us try to be positive and encouraging, edifying and peace-loving.  Whenever possible, share God’s word to make your point.

So here is the first question from one of you out there.  You are free to answer it and add further thoughts as the Spirit of God leads.  Examples from your own life would be another possible way to comment.  Also, if you have a mother (or grandmother, or aunt, or mentor) who is a believer, ask her what she thinks and then come back and tell us!

What does discreet and chaste mean to you?

Webster’s dictionary:

Discreet (adj) 1. judicious in one’s conduct or speech, esp. with regard to maintaining silence about something of a delicate nature; prudent; circumspect. 2.  showing prudence and circumspection: a discreet silence.

Chaste (adj) 1. not having engaged in fornication; virtuous.  2 free from obscenity; decent: chaste conversation.  3. undefiled or stainless: chaste, white snow.  4. pure in style; subdued, simple.  5. unmarried

a lively hope

DSC_9017

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again into a lively hope

by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away

reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God

through faith unto salvation

ready to be revealed in the last time.

Wherein ye greatly rejoice,

though now for a season, if need be,

ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth,

though it be tried with fire,

might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

Whom ye have not seen,

ye love;

in whom, though now ye see him not,

yet believing,

ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

recieving the end of your faith,

even the salvation of your souls.”

(1 Peter 1:3-9)

“Believers have a hope of glory, a lively hope, a hope eternal and divine.  Because our hope abides, our praise continues.  Because our hopes grow brighter and are every day nearer and nearer to their fulfillment, the volume of our praise increases.  ‘I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.’  (Psalm 71:14)  A dying hope would bring forth declining songs.  As the expectations grow more dim, so would the music become more faint.  But a hope immortal and eternal, flaming forth each day with more intense brightness, brings forth a song of praise which always gathers new force as it continues to arise.  See well to your faith and your hope, for otherwise God will be robbed of your praise.  It will be in proportion as you hope for the good things which He has promised to your faith, that you will render to Him the praise which is His royal revenue, acceptable to Him by Jesus Christ, and abundantly due from you.”  ~C.H. Spurgeon

A lively hope = something to praise God about!

happy saturday

This morning I woke up to Caleb’s little feet step-step-stepping down the stairs.  A moment later, I turned under my covers to see his little self trying to climb up into bed with mommy and daddy.  I heaved him up into the middle of the bed.  After a while, since I couldn’t go back to sleep, I got up and left him, trapped under the heavy arm of his dad.

I went out to the kitchen. . it was quarter after 7. . a dark and rainy morning.  I made myself some coffee, prepared it in my favorite Alaskan mug, and toasted some white bread.  Yes, it was raining, and yes it was cool, but the porch was tempting.  I bundled up, grabbed a couple of magazines, my coffee, my toast, a blanket. . and out I went.

What more can a busy mom want than a quiet morning?  To sit on the porch with just a few simple things, knowing that her loved ones are behind her in the house, still cuddled up in their warm covers?

I was inspired by an article I read about a girl who grew up in a country farmhouse, with a mother who delighted in filling the house with beautiful things.  Sweet, simple pleasures.  We could all do these things:

“No other farmhouse I knew boasted a tall amethyst-glass candlestick, or custardy-yellow berry bowls, or a large flower-embossed silver spoon for the Sunday gravy.”

“Mother saw to it that we spoke the language of the flowers”

“On a bright June morning I might awake to find a treat on my painted dresser:  an old china teacup filled with tiny ferns and forget me nots.  And next to it, for no practical reason at all, would lie our one linen guest towel, starched and snowy and artfully placed to show the embroidered versions of the same dainty blue flowers.”

“Our lace was Queen Anne’s, and as long as nature turned it out from unseen bobbins along the roadside, it trimmed our kitchen shelf from a blue milk pitcher.”

“Mother would accept a wilting bouquet of dandelions from a milk-sticky little hand with the graciousness of a queen receiving orchids.”

“Sometimes we spent days collecting glass shards of blue medicine bottles and clear green cups and red pickle dishes, then wrapped them in cloth to snap smartly with a wooden spoon against a flat rock.  The kaleidoscopic jewels that resulted were mixed and shaken into prettily shaped bottles–and set on a windowsill.  When the sun was right, there was the stained glass glory of Chartres, refracted on the ceiling just as simple as that.”

“Like a grand lady, our house changed perfumes seasonally.  It wore cinnamon in autumn when the apple pies never stopped coming, and attar of roses filled the sunny rooms of summer.  We kept spruce and juniper boughs in crocks in the hall all winter, never even pretending they had anything to do with Christmas. In spring we splashed the scent of lilacs everywhere.”

So on this happy Saturday, I am in the mood to beautify my home.  I can hope that in future years, my own children will look back and remember my little attempts to make home a lovely place.

Rich took the three older children with him to the nursing home this morning.  After they left, the rain cleared away and the sun started to shine.  The outdoors beckoned to me and so I worked to get David and Caleb ready to go out, complete with the best purchase for SPRING ever:

Rich just got home with the children. . . . . .and has a new bike for Grace.  I suppose all the pretty little touches in the world can’t compare to that!  Or maybe childhood is a balance of both parents showing their love in the way they each know best.

(collections)

I had to have some fun today. . . .

so. . . .

I decided to play with my dishes!

Thank you to my MOM and DAD who got me started collecting these beautiful dishes (made in the USA!)  They gave me my first set 10 years ago.

In case you don’t know, it’s FIESTAWARE, made by Homer Laughlin China Co.

I thought you would enjoy this first picture, in which I was too lazy to empty the bowl of cat food.  Y

The most valuable and collected color is called “medium green” and I have one piece of it, it’s the teacup seen here on top of the stack of plates.  It’s the color of John Deere tractors.

I had a tough time keeping David and Caleb out of the kitchen.  Here you can see the top of Caleb’s head.  He was saying “Oh WOW!  WOW!  Yellow. . green. . blue. . red. . etc.”

Beloved, be familiar with the Word of God.

Stock your memory with the ancient records

of His great goodness.

Drink in the whole narrative of the evangelists,

and despise not Moses and the prophets.

Soak in the Psalms, the Song of Solomon,

and other such books until you come to know

the well-recorded goodness of the Lord.

Have His words and deeds of goodness

arranged and ready at hand.

Let them be at your finger tips, as it were,

because they are in your heart’s core.

Then you will be sure abundantly to utter

the memory of His goodness, for

“out of the abundance of the heart the mouth

speaketh”  (Matthew 12:34)

Good morning!  I am up early. . .and just waved my husband down the road.  It’s dark out still, and raining.  But when I opened the door the air was mild.  I can hear the spring birds waking up and singing.  I am munching an apple.

Today’s post is about books.  As most of you know, I love to read and I do enjoy just about every type of book.  But today I want to share titles that have helped me in my Christian walk.

I truly believe that as Christians, we should be very careful that we put good, wholesome words into our minds.  We have to be very careful about how much “poison” gets in there.  The older I get, the more I know myself and my weaknesses.  I was just sharing with a friend yesterday that I have to be cautious of how much “FOX news” I watch.  The news channels really get me feeling fear at times.  Also, I had to stop reading WW2 Nazi horror story memoirs.  The last one I read was a couple years ago, and that book actually carried me into a depression that lasted several weeks.  I could not read Foxes Book of Martyrs again.  I have studied martyrdom enough to know that God gives grace to His people who are put to death for their faith—I don’t have to fill my head with the details–because I personally can get very morbid about that.

All that to say.. . .reading good, godly, books puts good thoughts in my head.

The Bible comes first.  Read your Bible more than any book, because that is how God feeds and waters our soul.  The Word of God is ALIVE. . .and able to do so many things. . if only we will pick it up and really study it with interest and longing!  When I read my Bible I like to have a pen or pencil, a stack of index cards, and my journal.  If you only have time to read one book, make it your BIBLE, and STUDY.  Learn of Christ, the Lover of your Soul.

Now, I am just going to type out a list of books that impacted me.  I suppose I could be more organized about it but that would take too much time.  I wish I could link every book to amazon for you, but again, that would just take too much time.  Get a piece of paper and a pencil and jot down any that interest you.  Maybe you could find them at the library, if not, than I will also add a couple of links to online bookstores.

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

Studies in the Sermon on the Mount by D Martyn Lloyd-Jones (and all of his books would be good)

Brothers, we are NOT Professionals by John Piper  (This book was actually written for Pastors but if the house burned down and I could only choose 5 books to take with me, this would be one of them.  It has changed my life)

pictures from my walk

“An owl swallows its quarry as whole as possible, trusting to its inner organs to do the sifting and selecting.  Later it throws up pellets of the indigestible bones, hair, etc.”  ~Anna Botsford Comstock

After church, we came home and the kids all went to bed for naptime.  Rich was tired so he took a nap in his recliner.  I was tired but I simply had to take advantage of the free time so I bundled up and went outside for a long walk in the woods.  It was much warmer today but I still had to wear a sweater and my coat and my fingerless gloves.

The first place I went to was a big rock at the edge of the woods.  Pastor spoke of Christ being our rock today during his sermon.  It made me think of the verse that I wrote down on an index card a few weeks ago.  I hope that every time I see a big rock, I am reminded of my Savior and the solid foundation He gives me in my life.

“And the rain descended,
and the floods came,
and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house;
and it fell not:
for it was founded upon a rock.”
Matthew 7:25

DSC_8734

Here in New England, almost everything outside is still a shade of brown, gray, or green.  Any spot of color is an opportunity to bend down and feast my eyes.  The Master Creator has designed so much beauty and I enjoy seeing what colors He puts together.  Here we have a shade of red and a shade of yellow, both sharing the same leaf.

DSC_8740

The stream is busier and louder in certain places in the woods.  There are rocks of all sizes in it and next to it, perfect for stepping on or sitting on.  I found one right in the middle of the rushing water and just sat.  I tried to pray, but words didn’t seem adequate so I just sat there and felt happy.  Water is so refreshing. . .to listen to, to watch, to drink. . .Jesus is our living water for our soul.  He is our Rock and He is also our Water.

“Therefore with joy
shall ye draw water
out of the wells of salvation.”
Is. 12:3

“But whosoever drinketh
of the water that I shall give him
shall never thirst;
but the water that I shall give him
shall be in him a well of water
springing up into everlasting life.”

“. . . .And whosoever will,
let him take of the water of life freely.”
Rev. 22:17

DSC_8802

I sat there and enjoyed the stream for a while, and then I walked up toward the beaver pond in the woods.  The closer I got, the noisier the air became. . .full of the sounds of singing FROGS.  It was so loud.  I jumped over a small running stream of water and snuck around to try to see what was going on.  These were modest frogs, as soon as they sensed my presence, every one of them stopped their singing.  I sat down in a sunbeam and waited for about 10 minutes (or more) before I started seeing their beady eyes come up from the water.  There were a lot, but I didn’t get to see any of them up close.  What were they doing?  Go ask your mother.

This is a picture of the swampy beaver pond. . .this grass will grow up thick and green over the summer months. . .but at the moment only the tall, dead, brown grass from last season is standing.  There are sections of water that are clear and open (not pictured).

DSC_8830

After that interesting episode, I continued walking and started picking up little treasures to take home in my pocket.  I also studied this moss. . .that I had never noticed before. . .(I am a admirer of moss). . when I touched it it was dry, coarse, and wooly!

DSC_8838

Here is a picture of a small clump of moss that was lighter green and much softer:

Rich thought it looked like a little tiny green hedgehog.

DSC_8840

The acorns are all opening up, getting ready to send down a root:

DSC_8843

More treasures=

a feather from a blue jay, a piece of wood that I later accidently dropped in the stream, and a dry mass of fur and bones that an owl brought up.  (regurgitated).  They do that you know.  I was excited to find it, in a yuck kind of way.  I took it home and the kids and I picked through it.  They were not as impressed as I was.  I think they thought it was gross.  There were a lot of little jaw bones in it.  With tiny teeth.

DSC_8850

I found a stump covered in moss.  Lots of shades of green and brown, lovely for my eyes to see.

DSC_8853

Last stop=one more sit by the stream.  This section was very quiet.  I closed my eyes and could not hear any water sounds at all.  It was just flowing along. . . .I sat down on a rock and there was another rock below that I could rest my feet on.  I stuck my feet out to take the picture.  It was a nice place to sit, to say the least.

“He leads me beside the still waters”

“He restoreth my soul”

When I went inside, Rich was on the phone and the kids were watching a video.  Caleb was ready and waiting with a couple of books for me to read.  We sat on the couch and ate leftover Easter candy instead.

Hope you are all having a pleasant evening.  God loves you.

today (so far)

What a week.  Rich worked about 60 hours (72 considering travel time.  He just figured these numbers out for me).  He’s my emotion-regulator.  For some reason, I need to spend a certain amount of time with him in the house for me to feel calm and secure.  Yesterday was awful, I was crying and nervous most of the day.  I’m not saying it was all because of Rich not being home much, poor guy, I just know that it did play a part.  Sometimes I wonder just how I can survive mothering/homeschooling five children, keeping the housework together, and doing all the other 101 other things I do in a week.  I’m not complaining, mind you, I totally love my life, and yet how can anyone keep on top of things all the time?  Not possible.  So yesterday was a crash day for me.

I am feeling much better today (except my eyes still feel funny from all the crying yesterday).  It took the whole morning before I relaxed, though.  Rich took us to Crackerbarrel for breakfast again.  Thankfully the sun was shining, the sunlight being the only good thing about the weather—-it is SO SO COLD outside.  We actually saw some snow flurries (very light).  I denied it, but Jacob INSISTED that he saw them so I gave in and admitted it too.

We also went shopping.  Rich was looking for shoes which came to nothing but of course I was able to find plenty of things to purchase, including a stack of books, a new camera, and some seeds.  David had a craving for ice cream and looking into his big huge gorgeous eyes I could not say no. . .so that is what we had for a light lunch.  Ice cream cones!

When we got home we went for a walk (the dog needed some exercise).  There is a freezing cold wind today.  Jacob made me laugh when after a while I said dramatically, “I’m TOO COLD” and turned around to go back to the house.  He said to his Dad, “She’s a natural __________.”  (my maiden name)  “She sounded just like Grandma when she said that!”

It is cozy, so cozy in the house.  We have a fire going in the livingroom but right now Rich and I are in our bedroom.  David is snoring in our bed, Rich is sitting in the rocking chair and looking at stuff that has to do with the garage we want to build this spring, and I’m enjoying myself on the computer.

I took my camera along today. . . .

DSC_8651

Big Daddy passing out candy . . . .I think David looks so handsome in his coat and hat.  I call his coat the “puffy coat”.  I think David is concerned here, about getting the exact piece of candy that he picked out in the store.  Rich is probably saying something like, “You’ll get what I give you”.  (don’t worry, he did get the right one eventually!)

DSC_8653

All the candy sticks.  Caleb had his hair buzzed (by mommy) last Friday.  He’s got his baby face back.  I like to kiss those cheeks.

Rich brought me home these roses last night.

I plan on planting some seeds.  Should I let the kids help?  The thought sort of scares me.  Maybe I’ll try to do it with one child at a time.  It’ll take 5 times as long, but will be much more controlled.

My new camera!  I bought this because I need a little one
for our vacation next month.  I don’t want to carry Howard (my big camera is named Howard) around all over the place. . .he’s way too heavy, valuable, and cumbersome.

I love this little tiny Nikon!  And IT’S PURPLE!!!  Is that perfect for me, or what?

It’s about the size of a pack of cards!

This is an idea of a photo that I’ve been wanting to take for a few days.  After the children’s maple syrup field trip on Thursday we went to Walmart and I bought them each a pair of these awesome rubber boots.
