“Building a Grace-filled marriage and raising creative, contented, capable children without legalism or manipulation”
Paul says, in Ephesians 3:17-19: May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself. (TLB)
(Isn’t this an incredibly beautiful and encouraging verse?)
If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.’ John 7:38
“Wouldn’t you like to help your children learn how to recognize their thirst for Jesus Christ: Wouldn’t you like to help them find that Jesus is the only one who can give them life, from the inside?” -J. VanVonderen
“We can stop trying to control behaviors and feelings, and focus on value and identity. Our eternal value and identity are settled because of Christ.” J.V.
“We need to watch for ways to encourage our children to look to Jesus alone as their source of value and acceptance.”
“Our job as Christian parents is simply to draw our children’s attention to what is real–what is true–and not to try to control how they feel.” -J.V.
“Here is a message about how God’s grace can transform relationships within a marriage and family. The first step is learning the simple difference between God’s job and ours. God’s part is to fix and change. Our responsibility is to depend on the Holy Spirit, serve our families and help to equip them to be all they can be. Healthy relationships between husband and wife, between parents and children, are possible only when the filter of God’s grace is placed over the processes of marriage and parenting. The Christian family’s ultimate goals of harmony, obedience and full potential can be arrived at without using legalistic and manipulative methods.” (from the back of the book).
This book teaches and affirms what I believe to be true. However, I have rarely heard or read the message of grace-full marriage/parenting in quite this way (the author has much God-given knowledge in this area). I began reading it yesterday and am eagerly picking it up at every spare moment, with a pencil in hand. I’m learning SO much and will probably read the book again as soon as I finish it. I’m attaching the link here at the end of the post. Perhaps it will encourage you like is is encouraging me. How thankful I am for people who write about the hope and love we have in Jesus, so that we can live abundant lives in Him.
Have a wonderful day!
My friend Hannah (alaskahannah) made Sarah this beautiful quilt. I was so excited when I recently found a crib sheet (at Potterybarn kids) that matched it perfectly. Sarah is sitting here looking pretty and sucking on her finger. She’s the only one of our seven children that has never had a pacifier. She’s wearing one of my favorite outfits on her because it’s so soft (babygap blouse, leggings, and knit cardigan).
Davy’s first catch of the season. We were thrilled for him. He loves to fish and it makes me happy to see him down at the pond trying patiently to catch something.
Sarah made this mess herself!
This grass is like my soul…..Jesus makes me lie down in green pastures; lush, healthy, full of water.
Caleb James, my little flower picker. Oh how I love this boy of mine.
This was a peaceful afternoon. We spent time in my bedroom…Grace and I were in my bed working on our day journals and the boys were on the computer. Little Sarah was so pretty in her dress.
Later on that same day, I found her on the floor as still as can be.
She was holding her dress and sucking that finger again. It’s so wonderful to have this baby girl….we adore her.
One of our hens laid this H U G E egg, almost 1/2 a cup of egg was inside. We kept the empty shell and David wrote his name on it. Because it was his, he said.
This picture is for innaorchard, who loves old things. My Aunt Mary gave me this hankie that belonged to my Great Grandma. Great Grandma also made the doily under it. The box of nature bits was brought to me, as a gift, from Caleb. His hands were overflowing with treasures for his Mama and I grabbed the box to hold them. I think about him and how special he made me feel that day, whenever I see it.
I bought a couple of packs of velvety purple pansies and Grace worked so diligently to plant them in two big pots outside our door. Unfortunately, the hens ate every last bit of them.
God made the big beautiful sky.
And the small yellow flowers.
Some quotes that I like:
That which is to be loved long must be loved with reason rather than passion. Samuel Johnson
My heart is singing for joy….the light of understanding has shown in my little pupil’s mind, and behold, all things are changed. Anne Sullivan
Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree. Martin Luther
Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. Robert Louis Stevenson
Some verses I like:
Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Psalms 85:10
The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. Ps. 72:3
And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. Isaiah 32:17
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Romans 14:17
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. James 3:18
(In my thoughts, I believe that righteousness=Jesus Christ. I know He (His work, not mine) made/makes me righteous before God.)
Well, my son David told me yesterday that he had a BB in his ear and that it’s been in there for a month. Rich took him to the hospital last night and they didn’t have success. They cleaned his ear and they thought they saw the BB but they weren’t sure so we have to take him to a specialist today. Would you pray for us, please? Thank you.
It’s time for me to get the children their breakfast. I hope all my friends have a wonderful day!
“Who bends a knee
Where violets grow
A hundred secret
Things shall know”
The flower for the month of February is the violet. My birthday is in February, so it is always a treat to see the first spring violets appear. We have them growing wild in spots around our property, including down in the grass by the playset. I sat with Seth and Sarah on Friday, admiring the pretties. I saw a brilliant patch of them in a field the other day, a hundred dots of deep blue purple, in a sea of green.
Violets are edible, a simple but lovely feast for the senses..sight, smell, and taste. They would make a pretty addition to any spring salad.
The world is so full of a number of things,
I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.
Robert Louis Stevenson
My first little patch of daffodils were in full bloom on Monday. Caleb found Seth picking one and tattled on him, because he also wanted to be able to do it. “You may pick two, Caleb,” I said as I went to get something from the house. Next thing I knew, they were ALL picked. When I said “two”, he had heard “too”.
The Peter Rabbit mug was something I found at a second hand store. I have a soft spot for anything Beatrix Potter.

Out-door-life takes the child afield and keeps him in the open air,
which not only helps him physically and occupies his mind with sane subjects,
but keeps him out of mischief.
It is not only during childhood that this is true, for love of nature counts much for sanity
in later life.
This is an age of nerve tension,
and the relaxation which comes from the comforting companionship found in the woods and fields is,
without doubt,
the best remedy for this condition.

The children all sensed right away yesterday that IT was THE DAY for CATCHING things out of the ponds. So we spent almost the entire day outdoors. We went inside to work on some school and to eat. At about 3 in the afternoon we all came in to rest, but when we got up we went right back out.
We saw so many creatures yesterday that I wonder if we all dreamed of them in our sleep last night.
Davy, quietly on the hunt for tadpoles and frogs.
We have two ponds on our property and the children spent most of their time around the “long pond.” They walked around and around it, looking, searching, and catching with bare hands or with a net.
Turtle
Frog, in Grace’s hands
Bullfrog, isn’t it amazing?
Seth was so calm and sweet. Yes, being outdoors really does keep this 2 year old boy out of mischief.
He didn’t want to touch any of the creatures, but he was so excited to see them. It’s a special thing for me, this spring, to watch another boy enjoy God’s big world. Last year he was too little to understand very much (although we included him then, too).
The frogs were kept in the wheelbarrow.
They have incredibly large mouths!
The big bullfrog got away and then floated, stunned, for a while on the water. After it “came to” it dove away again out of sight, poor thing.
I think the reflection under him is so cool!
The industry of these children was amazing. I wish all my friends with youngsters could come over for a day like this, with us. They were working together to catch as many things as they could, but each enjoyed it in their own way.
Caleb’s happy smile
Caleb and Dave, looking at their zoo of pond creatures.
They had little fish in one bucket, tadpoles in another.
Ethan and Grace are convinced this is the same snake they’ve been catching for years. His name is Ferdinand and when they first caught him he was only “this big” (they hold their hands out to show me). He’s growing. Yesterday he was kept in a big metal garbage can, with water and rocks.
Toads
Bluets
We also saw ducks, geese, goldfinches, purple finches, a hummingbird, hornets, and a newt.
It was a wonderful day.
As I finish this up, I am thinking about my boys, who have eaten their morning eggs and cheerios and are right back outside again. This is an exciting part of spring for us because every year many, many toads come to our ponds to mate and lay eggs. The air is filled with the sound of their calls………..it’s a gray, damp morning but still good weather to be OUT exploring and enjoying God’s wondrous creation.
PS, I just went out on the porch and even our cat is catching creatures! Only he’s EATING them. LOL On our “welcome mat” I found one frog leg and one frog EYE. LOL
On a gorgeous Monday night, Jake and E had their very first baseball game.
Here is Jacob, getting ready to go up to bat. Ethan is next to him behind the fence at the dugout.
Jacob got up to bat a couple of times and got one nice hit….but was tagged out on first.
Ethan got to bat once. He hit the ball several times but never in the right direction. LOL
They had such a great time and their team won that night. It was quite exciting for them.
One of the spectators. Seth.
Why we had a great time:
Jacob: We won. I got a hit.
Ethan: We won. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
Grace: I like to watch the games. I have almost all the boys’ names on the team learned.
David: I had a great time running around playing.
Caleb: I had a great time running around playing. Sometimes Mom forgot about watching us and then I really had a great time.
Seth: I had a great time running around until my Mom buckled me into my sister’s baby carseat.
Dad: I had a great time being assistant coach.
Mom: I had a great time but left the game with an overloaded brain from: keeping track of kids, feeding the kids snacks, stopping friendly little Caleb from attaching himself to strange children and telling them embarrassing stories, nursing precious Sarah right out in the open, getting boys out of mud and dirt hills, keeping Seth from running far far away, watching handsome J and E play ball, getting jealous of my husband’s assistant coach position, stopping sibling spats, answering loud remarks about having SEVEN CHILDREN, and finally (sensing I was starting to not enjoy the time) giving up and going home early out of exhaustion to spend time with the littles, giving them baths and getting them ready for nighttime. I’ve tried various approaches to reducing stress during outings, it’s just a fact of life when you have seven children to watch it gets really tiring after awhile. The thing that helps the most is just staying positive and rolling with it with a sense of humor. If it gets to be too much, I go home rather than get mad. Sometimes that approach fails but I wouldn’t trade my large family for anything in the world……..I love them with all my heart.
However, last night Davy had a game and I left all the children home with Jacob to babysit. Rich and I watched the game together with just baby Sarah and it was nice heavenly.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian! Lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King!
The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind. (Alfred H Ackley, “He Lives” hymn lyric)
I bought the children’s clothes at The Children’s Place. I like that store because they sell the boy’s polo shirts in all the sizes (up to size 14). I even got one extra, so that I could make Sarah Joy’s hair band out of the same material. It was fun.
Sarah was so tired after church. I sat next to her to comfort her. She sucks her finger (not her thumb or a pacifier) whenever she’s feeling sleepy.
Last year there was no sister for Grace quite yet….but now there is a sister and Grace loves her so.
Thank you, God, for our baby Sarah…..
Sarah’s first Easter!
We went to church this morning and then we had a whole houseful for Easter dinner—my parents, my sister and her family, my brother, a friend of my sister, and our friends the K’s (family of 4). I made 2 hams, scalloped potatoes, and other things. I had the ladies bring food, too. The weather was nice enough for the children to play outside for the majority of the time. Now that everyone is gone we are going to relax and enjoy the rest of the night together. Rich is asleep beside me and Sarah is over there on the floor pulling out every baby wipe from the box. The rest of the children are playing.
Happy Easter! He is risen!
He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
(the hymn, “He Lives”, Alfred H. Ackley)
I usually do a {this moment} post on Fridays, a moment from my week, just a picture with no words.
But I have to add a few words to this Friday’s post.
I took the picture on a very gray and dark morning. The clouds were covering the sky, gloomily. I was in the livingroom taking care of Sarah when all of a sudden I saw a bright light from the sky. The clouds had broken and the sun was shining directly through the crack…in all the big, wide sky, the clouds opened right in front of the sun. I ran outside to get the picture….which truly doesn’t give justice to the actual sight I saw. It was a gift.
Today is Good Friday, the day when we remember our Savior’s death on the cross. Such simple words, explaining an event that makes my heart feel so many emotions; gratitude, sorrow, love, excitement, awe, worship, praise……that my Father GAVE His only SON…..and that my Jesus GAVE His life, for the people He loves so very much. Why did He do it? He did it so that we could have forgiveness for our sins, to make us clean and new again, in Jesus’ own righteousness. So that we could live forever with Him. Eternal life.
But the story doesn’t end in Jesus’ death on Good Friday.
The best part of all….the most wonderful part that makes our hearts sing, is that HE ROSE AGAIN. He lives forever and ever! Resurrection Sunday is my favorite day of the year.
In the midst of the busyness of this day—welcoming friends and family to our home and shopping for a big Easter dinner—I will be thinking of Him, and talking to Him, in my heart. The children and I have been reading the passages in the Bible, too.
What a beautiful weekend, for Christ’s own people. I’m rejoicing!
Happy Easter weekend, from our home to yours.
For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17
The children and I went to Amanda’s house last week and Jason (her hubby) was home so we left the little ones with him because Amanda wanted to show us the fabulous bike trail/river walk by her house. I was expecting an easy, meandering stroll…..um…yeah…so we ended walking for like 2 strenuous miles carrying Sarah (who gets heavy) the whole way. That probably sounds like nothing to most of you but I am an out of shape woman, apparently. I was hot and tired by the time I got back but Amanda, Jacob, Ethan, and Grace were still practically running. Of course I was also the one holding Sarah most of the way……….
It was a beautiful walk, by the river which was wide, smooth, and flowing fast.
And here is a darling little video of the most scrumptious baby. I had found my gentle Sarah in the kitchen, playing with an open box of bow pasta (she took it from the cupboard herself, she knows how to open the lower ones). She was so dainty about it and took one piece out at a time. I was trying to teach her how to say thank you and if you listen close, you will hear her try to say it. She is a little mockingbird.
This has been a very busy day so far. David, Caleb, and I made chocolate chip cookies. We mixed it all up then realized I had no baking soda (used the last of it on those pancakes). So we went downtown to buy some and of course I had to make use of the trip and ended up getting a cart of groceries. It was all worth it, the cookies are fantastic! David chose the recipe because he said the last ones I made he did not like because “They made me have a bad taste in my mouth all day.” While we made them, David said he felt like a chef. It was the apron he was wearing (Star Wars), the apron made him feel all professional. The only thing he did was crack the eggs and turn the mixer on and off……….
J and E had baseball practice from 12-2 so we dropped them off and then went to the library and the park. Would you believe it’s only 47 degrees outside. I’m ready for some warmth and sun, please. After we picked the boys back up (who were filthy from sliding into bases) we came home. It is now quiet time. Caleb is sound asleep on the couch. Sarah and Seth are in the cribs upstairs, sleeping. David is playing, Jacob and Ethan are reading their Science lesson. Soon we will do the “floating egg” experiment, which I am sure will be quite thrilling indeed. Oops, I forgot Grace. She is also in her room, reading a book she checked out of the library. I have a biography about Loretta Lynn that I am reading. I just finished her first one and now I’m reading the one she published a few years back. Did you know she was a grandma by the time she was 29. I just can’t get over that.
Oh, and when I was at the library I gave the names and ages of my kids to the librarian. The town drama coach-lady is trying to find children to act in her productions. Grace wanted to do it, but on the way home I gave the boys the news. With much loudness and drama, they told me that they would not do it, absolutely not, no way, no how. “If it was Lord of the Rings, I would think about it. But not Little Red Riding Hood!”, said Jacob.
