Dear Rosemary Wells,

I am a fan of yours.  A very big fan.  You see, I’ve been enjoying picture books with my various children for 19 years now and your books never get old.  They are always interesting.  They are “evergreen”.   We have read many of your books. Max’s Chocolate Chicken is a favorite, Bunny Cakes, and also Felix Feels Better. So many wonderful stories.

We have known of you for years, but we weren’t exactly die-hard FANS, yet.

You see, I never really stopped to realize what an amazing artist/author you were until the other day, when I found myself at the library, filling a bag of books for my children, who are in a summer reading program for their school.  They have to read and keep track of the number of books they complete and we carefully write the titles on a list in the cupboard.

My son Seth is 7, and Sarah is 6, so they need easier books to read.  Pictures books are perfect.

So yes,  I was at the library when I came to the “W” section (organized by the author’s last name) and realized….wow….Rosemary Wells has completed an amazing and prolific amount of work as a children’s author.  I showed my sixteen year old daughter the length of the row of YOUR books, each one thoughtfully written AND illustrated by you.  We were in awe and spoke of our love for your stories.  And at that moment, I became aware that I was a true fan.  So this is a thank you to you.  My oldest child is 19 years old.  There are a total of 7 children in our home.  And we have read your books all along the way.  They are a delight and charmingly creative!

DSC_0484

My six year old, with the long blond hair, sat cross legged by my side this morning.  She still had sleepy eyes and had just eaten her toast for breakfast.  We took Time-Out for Sophie from the library bag and she read me every word, leaning over the pages with her hair dangling and getting in the way so prettily.  “Sophie” was a hard word for her to pronounce and remember.  We were very amused by the antics of Sophie.  She threw her macaroni and cheese on the floor two times!  And then she dumped the clean and folded laundry!  But Sarah just loved the fabrics of all those pretty clothes.  She carefully studied each one and pointed her finger at her favorites that *she wished she could have * (with a sigh).

DSC_0485

Thank you for putting humor, detail, and beauty in your drawings.  I agreed that the purple polka dotted shirt would look very nice on Sarah.

DSC_0486

Sarah thought it was funny that Sophie had her time-out at the top of the stairs.  She wondered what the brown wall was behind her.  You see, we have bookcases at the top of our stairs.  I told her that Sophie is a mouse and so she lives underground.  I’m not sure if she was satisfied by that answer but her silence said it was the end of the question and so we moved on to the next page, the part about Granny.  Sophie kept taking Granny’s glasses right off her face!

DSC_0487

Wise Granny knew just how to put an end to Sophie’s nonsense….by putting HERSELF in time-out.  I thought to myself that yes, when MY children were being naughty to me, I would put MYSELF into time-out, too, just like Granny.

We turned the page again to see that Sophie was now in the tub and was in the process of squirting the bubble bath clear across the room.  The book didn’t say so, but Sarah knew that Sophie was headed for ANOTHER time out.

Then the book was over and she studied all the beautiful clothes that you drew for the end paper.

We read Shy Charles this week, too, and Noisy Nora.  Your wonderful books make me smile and the children like them just as much as I do.  We think you must be amused as you work on them, as well.  Happiness & joy all around.

Thank you, Rosemary Wells!  May you continue to create for many years to come!

I sit on the grass and watch the children jump into the pond.  They say the water is great and want me to swim with them.

Sarah got brave enough…yesterday!  Now she doesn’t stop jumping.  At the end of the day when she’s sitting snuggled up to me, I smell her hair and it smells so good, like sweet perfume and pond water.

I bought three bags of balloons the other day and they have been an endless source of amusement for the kids.  David likes blowing them up as much as big as they will get.  Then he plays with them until they blow up.  I was down at the pond when one of his balloons popped and it was so loud my heart leapt and I thought someone had shot a gun in the woods.  I went up to the house and the boys were laughing.  Ethan said it was as loud as a cannon.

I tied four water balloons for Seth as I wrote this blog post.  (He can’t tie them and Sarah can’t blow them up.  I’m still needed. LOL)

It was one of those “we almost didn’t bother” but we did and it was amazing.  God likes to do that now and then.  Totally unexpected SOUL FOOD.

The 2016 class, the faculty, the volunteers from the community, teachers, friends, parents, and ministers all came together for a heart-felt, spiritual service.  I sat in the pew with Seth, Sarah, David, and Caleb and soaked it all up.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23.

I know without a shadow of doubt that motherhood is my calling.
I remember as a teen all I wanted to be “when I grew up” was a mother.

Women can be and do so many things.  For me, for now, being a stay at home mom is what makes me feel the most content and satisfied.  For others, a feeling of utter contentment occurs as they perform their own particular gifts.  Although I am open and prayerful to doing more, (librarian?volunteer?photographer?dentist?) for now I have no other yearning or interest for anything else other than mothering these seven children of mine and tending our house and home.  Eventually these years will be over and I trust that God will lead me toward a new way of living.  I look forward to the future.

What was in my heart and soul as I mixed up bread dough with Sarah?
Joy that made me reach for the camera.  Love as I saw how big she was getting and yet she is still small enough to live in the moment.  Peace in the safety and security of knowing all my family was home.  The sun was shining, *all was well* (never taken for granted, because someone could skin a knee at any moment).  Gratitude to God for giving us our daily bread–bread for our stomachs AND our souls.

Making bread is a very humble pursuit.  Our ancestors baked bread daily and it became an endless chore for them.  It’s a treat for me, I bake bread when I want to, not because I need to, but the connection I feel with the ages makes the process satisfying.  Such humble ingredients; yeast, water, milk, butter, salt, and flour.

Whatever has happened before will happen again. Whatever has been done before will be done again. There is nothing new under the sun.  Ecclesiastes 1:9

The Bible says truthfully there is nothing new under the sun.  Motherhood. Baking bread.  These things have always been and always will be, as long as the sun and moon endure.  But these humble acts are our prayer of praise to Him as He opens our hearts and makes them tender toward all our blessings.

Meaning can be found in relation to Him, thus making life here tolerable, even delightful, and making ultimate existence possible, through Jesus Christ. All those things that make life here so weary and boring can have new meaning, when you understand who God is, what Christ did and you connect yourself to the genuineness of being a child of God.”  ~Warren Berkley

Take steps to practice joy in your daily life, and it will expand naturally.  Let joy fill your heart, and your heart will gladden your health.  Dr. Mao Shing Ni

“I practiced joy that day as I baked bread.  The children were with me, we used up eggs, the smell was wonderful, the braids of dough were fun to form, they baked up large and golden, and the taste was fantastic.  It was a  joy to slice, butter, serve and give to my loved ones.  Feeding others is a gift to the giver.”

Braided Egg Bread from allrecipes.com

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast (if you buy in bulk this is 4 1/2 tsp of yeast)
1/2 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 cups hot milk
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 teaspoons salt

1/2 cup water
5 eggs
11 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg
2 tablespoons sesame seeds (I didn’t have these)
Proof yeast and 1/2 cup warm water in a large mixing bowl.
Combine hot milk, sugar, butter, salt, and 1/2 cup water in a medium bowl. Cool to 110 degrees.
In small bowl, slightly beat 5 eggs, then add to cooled milk mixture. Add milk mixture to yeast mixture. Add 2 cups flour and beat until smooth. Slowly add remaining flour until it forms a stiff dough. Knead on a floured board for 10 minutes (5 minutes with a bread hook). Place in a large glass or plastic bowl lightly greased. Turn dough over to grease both sides. Cover and let rise in a warm, dark place until doubled in volume, approximately 60 minutes.
Punch down, cover, and let rise again until double, approximately 30 minutes.
Punch again, and form into three parts. Form each part into a 20-inch roll. Braid rolls on a large, greased cookie sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled.
Lightly beat remaining egg and brush loaf. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in preheated 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven for about 55 minutes until nicely browned. May be made into two regular sized loaves. Reduce baking time slightly.

“Mom, as long as I’m in the house you will never have dull knives again.”

David babysat one day last week and instead of money, he asked if he could order a knife sharpener of all things.  He had studiously watched online reviews before his purchase and was excited to try it out on all the kitchen knives.

There are moments every day that make me pause and praise; “I’m so glad to be alive for this.”  I know you have them, too.

As soon as I emerge from my room with the intention of having a quiet cup of coffee, I am greeted by the sight of least one small child and three teenagers.  The teenagers are getting ready for school, popping bagels in the toaster, finding matching socks, half dressed, printing out homework, etc.  The small ones see me and immediately start talking.  This morning was “Mom, with the medicine that you give me will it hurt when they pull out my string?”  and “Mom, I want a cream cheese bagel with butter and cream cheese.  No, I want toast with butter.  Two pieces.”  Happy dances, sparkling eyes, mama in her red robe making toast……..

This morning Rich was still home when I came out of my room and we kissed all alone in the pantry finding coffee and he made it for me without me asking and I sat on the couch with a hot mug in my hands.  Soon there were three, do you see Seth as he hides from the camera?  The mug is hiding a double chin.  Caleb is hugging me and Sarah had already eaten her two pieces of prepared-to-order toast.  I contentedly watched Rich put his shirt on for work.  We listened to David laughing about something he saw on youtube, we all laughed as he explained, but not because it was interesting but because he was interesting–funny and happy.  Ethan was sitting at the counter, Grace walked through with her Mary Poppins shirt on, she has a math test this morning and we .  She carried her bagel and tea with her onto the bus.

This morning I got up at about 6:30 to find Ethan just about to make waffles, Jacob getting ready to go see Emily and take her to school, Grace and Dave ready & waiting for the bus, Michael’s rooster-crowing alarm going off so he could go jogging, and Sarah already awake and playing with toys.

I thought I had to take Gentleman Gray to the vet and got 10 minutes down the road before I got to thinking and realized his appointment was for the following week……sooooooo, I came back home, washed the syrup off Seth’s pants….as he told me it was “wear red and white to school” day, I hugged him because he was so dang cute, I got their snacks ready, waved to them as they rode away on the bus, then cleaned the kitchen and living room even though I didn’t want to.  And now here I am on the couch ready to type up a blog post and then continue on with my day.

These are just some photos taken over the weekend.  This one because I was walking around the (melted!) “long pond” and noticed I had one single friendly hen following me.  All the rest of the flock was back at the coop where I had just stopped to give them treats and gather eggs.

We walked all the way around but didn’t see any signs of life in the pond, it was only wishful thinking.

During these extremely busy years of being a housewife/mama to a large family, one of the ways I give myself a *small pick me up* is by buying jewelry at Tiffany’s every chance I get going to Goodwill and/or the Thrift stores to see what treasures I can find.  You never know!  (I’m always looking for fiestware but only find a piece .001 % of the time)  Yesterday I bought three framed pieces.  One is Lady-slippers, one is Trilliums, and one is Violets.  Two of them are signed and numbered prints and the other is a painting on velvet.  I loved them because they are wild flowers that grow in our woods.  Last week I bought the “Thank you for Not Smoking” sign which NO ONE understands but I think is funny because no one in my life smokes or would smoke at my house~  LOL.  I bought it because of it’s irony, but also because it’s handmade embroidery in colors that i like and, only 50 cents.

Ethan’s Waffle Recipe

2 eggs
1 3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
2 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tablespoon sugar

In a large bowl beat the eggs.  Add the remaining ingredients and beat until smooth.  Do not stir the batter between bakings.  Makes 6 round waffles.

He doubled the recipe so we could freeze the leftovers.  They can be popped in the toaster for a quick breakfast or after school snack.  We eat them with butter and Grandpa’s homemade maple syrup.

In direct opposition to all the local hype regarding this weekend’s winter storm, the snow fell gently and calmly over our town.  I couldn’t help but wish that I hadn’t heard the numerous warnings that “The Snow Is Coming!”, why couldn’t it just fall without so much fanfare like it did when I was a child and, with no thoughts of snow, I would awaken in the morning to a surprising world of white and joy?

That’s how it was for dear Sarah who saw the snow and had to get outside in it to walk and play and taste.  What a gift childhood is.

I am thankful for……. lovely snow days that bring cancelled events so we can stay snug in the rooms of our home, bring in friends, and have a day of slowness.  The calm descends over me (rather like the snow) even as I busy myself making cookies, homemade meatballs, spaghetti, and listen to all the conversations at once.

Home is a place of contentment, prayers, music, naps, laughter, running up and down stairs, small arguments and resolutions, puzzles and games, freshly baked cookies, a delightful crackling fire in the fireplace, trips outside to breathe in the icy fresh air, marvelous books to read, blankets, throwing yet another log on, video games, movies….

yes, home is a place for beautiful messy L I F E and living, one thousand unspoken blessings each day, sharing, loving, enjoying……but mostly it is a place for the very best togetherness of friends and family.  Here we are loved beyond measure.

“Wherever the heart wanders it carries the thought of home with it.”

sweet family christmas

The morning of Christmas Eve, I woke up at 5  and was unable to fall back to sleep.  I slipped out of bed, put on my robe, and tiptoed out of the room to spend some quiet time in the house before the family woke up.  I imagined a nice cup of coffee to be drunk in leisure while gazing at the Christmas tree all aglow.

However, when I opened the door I discovered a sleeping teenage boy on the couch, along with my six year old son Seth who was wide awake and watching Garfield on TV.

And he was full of energy.  Nothing I tried would get him to stop moving from one activity to the next.  I wondered if he had perhaps eaten sugar or candies for breakfast.

Therefore, it was quite surprising that the next day -Christmas Day- Seth was the last child to wake up!

what family means to me

DSC_2742

Once again, never to be taken for granted, Rich and I and all seven of the children were together in our warm and cozy living room — to decorate our Christmas tree, purchased in town at the Fire Department for 30 dollars.

It was delightful chaos.  Talking, bossing, laughing, non stop movement to and from the tree to the ornament boxes which were all along the couch.

Seven times we experienced the miracle of birth, births of our own flesh and blood, baby girls and boys from a man and woman whom God joined together as one.  As the children grow and develop into their own individual selves, we are all the more thankful for each and every moment with them.  They teach us so much, they remind us of what we have forgotten–that life is an adventure from sun up to sun down.  Very little worries, seldom any cares, only exciting things to look forward to and absolute trust that Mom and Dad will love and nurture them.

DSC_2743

From the oldest to the youngest, we are their Parents until death do us part.  To support, guide, enjoy, and yes…even step away (but never too far away) in order to give space for them to make their own decisions in life.  They will become stronger and independent, knowing that we are there to cheer them on their journey of living.

As their Mother, their pains are my pains, their joys are my joys.  Their love is my love.  One of the most romantic things I have witnessed occurred last night and oh, last week at this time I would have never dreamed that my darling daughter would very soon have a loving, Christian boy humbly ask and receive the blessing of her very protective Dad to get to know her……….and my heart gives grateful praise even as I sneak upstairs to read their text messages after she goes to school.  *sigh* soooooo sweet

Reading to the kids…always and forever because maybe by the time my own children don’t want a story read, I’ll be a grandma.

Ethan sick and snuggling with his dog.

Thankfully this was taken by my husband last week and no one is sick anymore.

I found Sarah measuring her doll just like I measure her.

She loved playing with the new Madeline dollhouse….for hours.

Rich made me leave the house and go on a date.  😉

I found perfect fitting flare jeans at GAP.

I read this book and recommended it on the blog years ago.  I just picked it up and read it again.  It’s called The Light on the Island, by Helene Gliddon and was just as good the second time around.  Helene was the seventh born of 13 children and spent the majority of her growing up years with her family on an island.  Her parents were the lighthouse keepers.

She wrote about the trees and animals that the children loved and visited, and I took a picture of the description of Puffy the toad to send to my friend Joanna.

I want a pet toad, too.  But in the meantime, I’m going to adopt a tree for my very own.  We have a lot of trees.  Did you know it’s very comforting to hug a nice solid tree?  There’s life inside of it that seems to refresh a person….trees are such nice plant-companions.  With all the appeal of electronics inside, I never want to forsake good old nature, or have my children miss out on the wonders that are outdoors.

Right before I got off my butt and cleaned off the coffee table.

Oh, wait, I think it was Ethan who got off his butt because I told him to.

This evening I am making pasta for dinner and taking 13 year old David for a check up at 5:30.  I was supposed to take him at 10 this morning but somehow missed the reminder call.  They had to call me to tell me I missed it.  Thankfully, the Doc allowed me to bring him later and not have to pay the missed-appointment fee.

Tomorrow Caleb has an appointment at 8:30 in the morning and then Sarah at 3:45.

The appointment for Sarah is in regards to a surgery she has to have soon.

I had some anxiety this morning but after praying and working on cleaning, writing snail mail and watching TV with Michael, I took a 2 hour nap which helped a great deal.

Happy Monday, friends!  tell me all your happenings.
