It’s you I like,

It’s not the things you wear,

It’s not the way you do your hair–
But it’s you I like
The way you are right now,

The way down deep inside you–
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys–
They’re just beside you.

But it’s you I like–

Every part of you,
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings

I hope that you’ll remember

Even when you’re feeling blue
That it’s you I like,

It’s you yourself,

(song by Mr.Rogers)

old love

I am blessed to be a penpal to an 85 year old Christian woman, Sally.  She lost her husband a few years ago and is now living alone in their old farmhouse.  She has neighbors and relatives who love her and check in on her often.

As a little girl going to church, my family sat in the pew in front of Roger and Sally.  So, she watched me grow up, meet Rich, and get married. Her letters have been a tool in God’s hands to get me to think about life and what matters most.

Todaywould have been Roger and Sally’s 61st anniversary and I thought it would be nice to share some quotes from her letters.

“If I could live my life over I would work harder when I was young instead of being so world crazy–and would have been nicer to Roger all the years we were married.  We had a great life but now he is gone, I wish I had done so much more, he was so good.”

“My parents were very thoughtful of each other.  She always was cooking something that he especially liked.  He always was sure her wood box was full and had plenty of water, so she wouldn’t have to carry a lot.”

“Back then, that was the way you showed you cared.  There was very little touching in front of the kids (you just didn’t do those things) but they made 8 kids so there must of been a lot of lovin’ in there somewhere.”

“We didn’t have anything but kids, but there was always a lot of caring.”

“We always said, ‘Life begins when the kids are gone and the day dies’ and it did!!”

“We just enjoyed being together, if we were working, taking long walks in the woods, or relaxing on the back lawn in our easy chairs (eating ice cream).”

“Roger used to stir things for me, at the last, when my hands and arms would ache.  Whatever I made, I made a little something for him to sample.”

“We were married on Valentine’s Day 1946, so we were always putting heart notes in places, lunch pails, pillows, on steering wheels, in boots or shoes–just fun things.  I miss these things so much now.”

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose.
That’s newly sprung in June:
Oh my Luve’s like the melodie
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’the seas gang dry.

Till a’the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear
While the sands o’life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve!
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.
Robert Burns

Why do I love you-for the gifts you bring
The pretty things that anyone could buy?
Ah, you are more to me than breath could sing,
Than tongue could tell, however hard I try.
I love you for the thrill of your hand on mine
Can give, like fire running through dry grass;
I love you for the pregnant silence, dear,
That falls upon our souls like God’s own place,
And for our trust at death alone to cease,
Such little things to love you for, you say?
You know what’s locked within
my heart each day!
Elizabeth Shaw Montgomery

I dearly hope that this Valentine’s day finds you in love with the people in your life and especially our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us”  Ephesians 5:1

baked oatmeal recipe, etc

Baked Oatmeal

A recipe from Amish country in
Lancaster county, PA

(from a bed and breakfast we stayed in
which is owned by an Amish couple
)

DSCN53880001

1/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup milk

Mix all together in a loaf pan.
Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes.

This is a recipe that I make for Rich and myself.  If the kids happen to want some than that’s great.  If not, there’s more for me!

I would eat this with a side of fresh fruit and a glass of cold milk.

The original recipe is doubled and baked in a 9 by 13.

Pray for me today.  I have had 2 nights of wakeful hours.  Added to the fact that yesterday was so busy means that this morning I feel quite . . .drained.

Verse to share:  “As a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him.  He remembereth that we are dust.”  Psalm 103

Comforting verse!

My favorite Hymn:

All the way my Saviour leads me-What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Saviour leads me-Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for every trial, Feeds me with the living bread.
Though my weary steps may falter, And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the rock before me, Lo! A spring of joy I see.

All the way my Saviour leads me-O the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit clothed imm0rtal, Wings it’s flight to realms of day,
This my song thru endless ages, Jesus led me all the way.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

quote

From the book, Holiness, by J.C. Ryle 1816-1900

I see some professing Christians always running about after spiritual food, always in public, and always out of breath and in a hurry, and never allowing themselves leisure to sit down quietly to digest, and take stock of their spiritual condition. . . . .

Spiritual prosperity depends immensely on our private religion,
and private religion cannot flourish unless we determine that
by God’s help
we will make the time,
whatever trouble it will cost us,
for thought,
for prayer,
for the Bible,
and for private communication with Christ.
Alas!  That saying of our Master is sadly overlooked:
“Enter into thy closet and shut the door.” (Matthew 6:6)

about pictures

Went for a walk today.  Took some pictures.

A friend of mine said to me yesterday that people like my blog, “because of the pictures”.   I’m glad that I can use something that I enjoy doing to give another person pleasure.  Some people can do it with words, other use photos, others do both.  Like many of you, I love the Lord with all my heart, and I honestly believe that we can glorify Him with our words and photos here on xanga.  Although not a professional, although I do not have a professional camera, I still find satisfaction in my little “hobby for pleasure”.

In our photographs, we seek to give small glimpes of what large things we see:  in nature, relationships, and different perspectives.  We also make little things big, in order to inspire others to look and perhaps, to see what we see.  A picture of a child also reflects and gives a glimpse a mother or father’s love.  A picture of a tree gives us a taste of our awesome Creator.  A picture of something homemade, like pancakes, calls to mind the memory of a loved one’s sacrifice.  These are moments in time, moments to be thankful for.

I remember how I said, “Give me your best smile”, and I smile when I see the result.  I remember how they took FOR. EV. ER. to arrange themselves on the ground.

DSCN53590001

I look at the detail in this picture and I am touched once again by the beauty of God’s handiwork.  I think about the Bible, and how it teaches us that someday there will be a new earth.  Can you imagine?  Like the old hymn says, “Oh that will be glory for me!”  Someday.  What a beautiful word for a Believer.

DSCN53600001

To me, this is a perfect picture.  First of all, I love the tree.  It’s a HUGE evergreen that grew and divided into two parts.  Sadly, half of it broke and fell, but it made the perfect seat for my son.

Secondly, I love my son.

The woods can be a magical place.  This picture is my favorite.  My children love the Narnia books, and the effect of the woods in this photo reminds my family of Narnia.  That’s the wonder of it, it could be Narnia, with just a little imagination!

“Will you love Jesus more when you go on your way?

When this moment is a memory, will you remember His face?

Will you look back and realize you felt His love more than you did before?

I pray for nothing less than for you to love Jesus more.”

~some of the lyrics to a song that was sung at my wedding.  The words can also apply to a BLOG.

about pancakes

I remember when I was still a schoolgirl how many times my Mom made us kids a homemade breakfast.  More often than not we were eating scrambled eggs with toast, french toast, or pancakes.  I remember at times we would get on the bus and one of the other kids would say, “What did your Mom make you for breakfast this morning?” with a wistful look on their face.

I was so blessed to have a Mom that would sacrifice the time and energy needed to make breakfast for five hungry children.

And now, I’m doing the same thing!

This morning was a pancake morning and as I stepped on and around the Lucky Charms that Caleb scattered on my floor, and did all the 101 things to pull off bacon and pancakes, I thought of those early years again.

Only this time, instead of a longing for the old days,  I felt a connection.  The connection between generations of women in my own family.  Grandma, Mom, and now me.  All making pancakes in our own time.

Oh what contentedness I feel when doing these motherly things each day.  This morning it was like a wave of bliss.  Me in my nightgown and ponytail.  The children all still in their pj’s.  My husband drinking coffee and finishing a presentation for work over in his recliner.  Tears in my eyes from gratitude.

Quotes

DSCN44400001_1

“So the first effect of Christianity is to make people stop and think. They are not simply overawed by some great occasion. They say, “No, I must face this. I must think.”..the greatest trouble is that men and women go through life without thinking. Or they think for a moment but find it painful, so they stop and turn to a bottle of whiskey or television or something else—anything to forget.”  Martin Lloyd Jones

These are Charles Haddon Spurgeon quotes:

“It has been said that our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength. “

“Many men owe the grandeur of their lives to their tremendous difficulties.”

A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you, and were helped by you, will remember you when forget-me-nots are withered. Carve your name on hearts, and not on marble.

None are more unjust in their judgments of others than those who have a high opinion of themselves.   ~Spurgeon

A vigorous temper is not altogether an evil. Men who are easy as an old shoe are generally of little worth.  ~Spurgeon

I go through my days, I forget to pray, I push aside deep thought for Christ, put off my Bible reading.  I get caught up in the world.  Fears and doubts creep in, small at first, then they grow.  Oh Lord help me to be faithful.  Thank you for YOUR faithfulness and for your love that will not let me go.

DSCN37070001

Are you a true believer?  If you are, you ought to glory in Christ.  Glory not in your own faith, your own feelings, your own knowledge, your own prayers, your own amendment, your own diligence.  Glory in nothing but Christ.  Alas!  the best of us know but little of that merciful and mighty Saviour.  We do not exalt Him and glory in Him enough.  Let us pray that we may see more of the fulness there is in Him.
