The chicken who was really a rooster.
I wrote before that we were not jealous of “Juliet” and her long blond feathers.
No, we were never jealous, but we were suspicious.
Why did she not look like her sisters?
Why is she so fancy looking, with such plumed feathers upon her tail?
Oh, I was quite suspicious, and every once in a while I would say, “I wonder if Juliet is really a rooster?”
This morning, my suspicions were confirmed. Davy went down to the coop at 7:30 this morning and ran back with red cheeks (from the cold), and breathlessly said, “One of our chickens is a BOY! I heard it say cockadoodledoo!”
Half an hour later, Grace returned with her authoritative report. “Yes, Juliet is definitely a rooster. He’s acting KINGLY and mated with Ena!”
It was my idea to name him George. Grace wanted to name him Cock. So, George Cock it is.
We had ordered all female birds this summer but was aware that mistakes can happen. I never wanted a rooster as part of our flock but now that we know Juliet is really George, I am at peace. George may stay with our blessing, and live a long and happy life with his one dozen girls.

LOL this is so Funny Ha! I have a feeling that one dozen girls….. is going to greatly increase! Holy moly you might just end up with a chicken farm LOL oh goodness. How do you know that when you are cracking an egg for breakfast that its not going to be a chick? ~love ya Sissy
Funny!! I can just hear the little voice, out of breath, declaring “I heard the cockadoodledoo”. It made me smile. Your chickens are so neat.
Hahaha, that is funny.
Sometimes life’s little surprises are fun!
I was thinking the VERY SAME THING as you sister!!! I like the idea of waking up to the cocadoodledoo but would be scared to eat the eggs now.George is very handsome, I am sure he is happy that things are all cleared up now and that he will no longer be called Juliet.
Lucky guy. 😉
Wouldn’t it just be one of the worst jobs in the world to determine whether baby chix are girls or boys???? Perhaps that is why the results of such testing are often incorrect. My beautiful, all-male rooster (who is the cockiest cock I’ve even seen and unchallenged boss of the yard) is named Delbert, but he began life on our ranch with the inappropriate name of Della. The cockadoodledo is a definite giveaway.
Yes,that does happen! Some people think fertilized eggs are healthier……..
hahahhaha, that’s hilarious! We didn’t end up with a rooster, although we wondered if one of them might turn out to be one lol! Ours are all hens and are laying very well. We’ve got more chicks on order, so we’ll see if any Juliets end up being George’s (grin). He is one beautiful rooster, I’ll definitely give him that! Thanks for the chuckle, Shanda! Have a great day!
LOL
That is to funny! He is very pretty for a boy:)
my sister has chickens as well and she had one beautiful white chick born last year that she promptly named Beauty. as time went by though, Beauty displayed the same characteristics you described, long tail feathers, fullness around the neck, the likes. Eventually she had to accept that Beauty was a rooster when she saw him “acting kingly”. lol Now she has a LOT of white chickens.
haha! He looks like this little rooster that we were given in Costa Rica. She’s a small guy and his cockadoodledoo is only about halfway there. 🙂 We named him Ramon and my youngest daughter carried him everywhere! He was like a pet, it was so fun. He’s still down on my in-laws farm in Costa Rica.
Well…..a rooster with a dozen hens…no wonder he’s Cock-a-doo-da-doodling!! 🙂 Cute story.
What a fun discovery!!
Nice to meet you, George Cock. 🙂
LOL 🙂
12 lovely ladies all to himself? Nice going there, George!
how funny and fun! =) with our first batch of chickens we had a number of roosters and they were getting mean, so we sold them. I wanted to keep one thinking it would be fun to hatch some chicks out. So the one we couldn’t catch stayed, and he turned out to be a nice rooster. We did hatch some out last year, but unfortunately only four are left, and they have all turned out to be roosters too! Our poor hens. Think it’s about time to get rid of some roosters again. I’ve heard one rooster makes them lay better, but more than that, well, it’s just not a good thing…..=/
That is just so funny!!!:):) Long live king george!:)
He is very GRAND! 🙂
That’s so funny! He must be in heaven with all those ladies! New name is cute too. Love you, Lish
: ) love it.
Oh too funny. Looking forward to more stories of George Cock! I love the reporting from Davy and Grace.
We had a stray dog that adopted my brother and he named him “Benji” then about 2 months after we had the dog “Benji” had puppies oops! lol
Funny, funny. I can see it already. Your boys will be building an incubator and you will next try your hand at hatching your own chicks.
How exciting! He’s a handsome rooster. 🙂
I think I would really enjoy talking to Grace! I love reading her comments.
LOL—poor George!!!!
Is it wrong to say George Cock is a pretty boy??!! LOL
George Cock is a beauty! Yeah, I say as long as peace reigns in the chicken coop he can stay. Now, I just hope he doesn’t start waking you up around 4 AM with his crowing! LOL!
I enjoyed this true story so much!
HeHEEE!
George Cock is very handsome!! Great post!
Without ‘George’ you wouldn’t have the opportunity of having many more little ‘chick-lets’ LOL He is beautiful. We named a kitten a girl name & come to find out he was a boy, can’t remember the name, but I think it was ‘princess’ LOL OOPS.
Now that he has come out of the closet, I must say, “George is absolutely beautiful.”
What a beauty “she-George” is! Knew someone who ordered the reds-which are supposed to be mostly females—or so she was told:) well she received four and guess what– they all “squacked ” as she called it–An old chicken pro– went to see and everyone was cock-adoodle-dooing:)
