“This is an age of nerve tension, and the relaxation which comes from the comforting companionship found in woods and fields is, without doubt, the best remedy for this condition.”  ~Anna B. Comstock, 1911

“Our real need is inward riches.  We need to learn to be still and know that God is God.  We need to ‘practice the presence of God’ till we take on something of the nobility of our divine Companion.  We need to cultivate silence and discover the riches of secret places.  We need to discover God in the deeps of our own souls.”  ~A.W. Tozer

I have been able to spend the majority of this day alone.  These pictures, that I took today on a little walk by our stream,  represent to me the feelings of slowing down, and resting, that were given to me like a gift.  My mind feels peaceful again.

That top verse, Mark 6:31, makes me chuckle a little, “for there were many people coming and going, and they (the disciples) did not even have time to eat”…..as a mother of five, I often feel that way.  Sometimes I don’t eat “lunch” until 2!

Anyway, it was a wonderful day….

  1. Wow.. Ms Shanda I needed to hear these words so much! I am currently crushed with the burrden of nursing exams, and my soul is weary and discouraged, not to mentioned totally overwhelmed!!! Thank you for sharing these quiet words.

  2. Wow, beautiful pictures. So peaceful and calming. Love the quotes too. I’m glad you got some alone time. Do you have the Handbook of Nature Study (I feel like I’ve asked you this before?) It’s funny how way back in 1911 Anna Comstock wrote about nerve tension. And how much more we have today!

  3. I love these amazing, crispy, ice pictures! I hope you are all okay there; I heard that a huge ice storm affected the northeastern states and practically pushed my hubby away from the computer so that i could get on here and see if you had posted anything! hugs and prayers, Gail

  4. such an encouraging post…and I know that sometimes I get so caught up in the busyness of my day that I really don’t take the time to appreciate the country in which I find myself…I am in Germany, and I hope that in the coming weeks that I can go out for some walks and discover what truths about God are evident in his creation here…

  5. Sometimes, I read your words, and I wonder if I know what is on your mind …
I’m off to my electric blanket and a warm cup of chamomile and lavender tea.  That is MY relaxation!
    Praying for you, too.

  6. Love how the light is shining on the ice, Chloe is behind me on the chair as I type, she is spraying water on my hair and then combing at, humming and talking to me in her best grown-up hair stylist voice.
God’s gift of nature and quiet time is priceless isn’t it?
