Davy-Do goes fishin’

Little boy, do you know how blessed you are?  Of course, you did ask about 1,000 times for a fishing pole.  And mommy *of course* has been reading you a book all about How to Fish–how to find those big nightcrawlers, why you shouldn’t touch the body of any fish you plan on throwing back, how to put a worm on a hook, what the different sized hooks are called, and so on.

You have had fishin’ fever.

So your Dad “finally” took you to a sporting goods store last Saturday and bought you your very own fishing pole.  He bought one for himself and another one for big brothers to share.

Once you got home, you had to stand around and watch Daddy put together the tackle box that he bought.  He said he saved 20 dollars by getting the kind you have to put together yourself.  Saving that 20 dollars also paid for another lesson on “waiting patiently” for you, Davy.

It was hard to find worms in the middle of the bright sunny day.  You and I read in the book that nightcrawlers are easier to find. . ..at night.  But you and your brothers managed to find some small, skinny, reddish colored worms.  You put them in a dirt-filled Campbell’s soup can.

Mama pretty much kept to herself and let you boys have fun together.  That’s because when I did go down to watch, you almost cast your hook into my wrist.  That’s okay.  You didn’t mean it.  But, I figured I was safer if I kept my distance.

Davy, you fished and you fished.  But big brother was the only one to catch anything~4 little ones~.

So, you haven’t caught anything yet.  But that’s okay.  Mommy had to chuckle, shaking her head a little, when she heard you explain to your speech teacher about the “BIG ONE” that you “almost” caught.  You showed her just how BIG it was, with your little arms.

Apparently, the need to exaggerate “the one that got away” is something that comes naturally to fishermen.  Even you young ones.

You were very patient

Mama thinks your toes are cute.  All that sitting still makes your toes curl.

Daddy and Davy-do, like two peas in a pod~

Daddy understands your little boyishness when mama does not.

He says you are just like him, when he was little.

I hope you enjoyed reading about David’s first time fishing.  I’m so glad we have 2 ponds so that he can fish without leaving home, although I’m sure they will be checking out other fishing holes in time.

As I was typing this, I could hear Grace and Davy in the kitchen.

She just came to me and said, “Mom?  How do you make those waffles?”  (frozen ones)

“You just put them in the toaster, that’s all.”

“I did that, and they turned out mushy.”

“What?  What do you mean, mushy?”

I got up to go check.

“They taste AWFUL”, said David, when I appeared.

No wonder!  THEY WERE TOASTING FROZEN HAMBURGER PATTIES!!!!!!

(As it turns out, we don’t even have frozen waffles.  I have a small waffle maker. . . . . .guess I’ll be making fresh waffles this morning, even if it takes an hour to make enough for five hungry children.  It’s the least I could do after laughing at Grace long and loud *which she did not like*.)

PS, The toaster is a great defroster of hamburgers.

  1. Oh my goodness!  Toasted hamburgers???  LOL!  Oh boy ~ that’s a good one!  Thanks for the laugh!  And yes, I did enjoy the “fishing trip” ~ reminds me of when I was little:  My daddy took us fishing too ~ and I remember catching sunfish ~ oh, how I miss him ~

  2. Thanks for the good laugh… hamburger patties! I remember my first time fishing, I would get so impatient waiting especially when I could see so many fish in there. I still love to go when I get the chance. I am so glad you shared Davids first fishing experience with us.

  3. I love your description of David. Ainsley has been asking for a fishing pole to use at the pond in the park down the street. We keep thinking about it, but never doing it, wondering if our energetic child has enough patience for fishing, but if David can do it…. :)Ha! The hamburger buns story is hilarious! I bet they did taste awful!

  4. Oh, I can’t believe that they tasted them after toasting them….yuck!
I remember all the fun I had going fishing…it would amuse us for hours.  Although I think we enjoyed exploring the creeks more.

  5. My Dad would have loved Davy-Do!  He always wanted a little boy to take fishing, but he had three girls. We all, at one time or another, tried it out, but it was just……….. ew! God blessed my Dad when a new pastor took their church who had not one, not two, but THREE little boys who loved to fish!

  6. I love the look on his face in the 2nd picture with the concentration:)   Thank you for sharing the fishing story with all of us, it was very cute.   That is to funny about the frozen hamburgers!   I guess we all know what you are having for lunch today:)   Did they put syrup on the patties to?   I hope you have a great day.

  7. Good Morning Shanda…..Great “fishing story.” Sooooo funny. Good description too. Love it.
And the hamburger aka waffles…..very funny. Takes me a long time too to cook waffles for the children. Big boys can eat lots of waffles!!
Enjoy your beautiful day with your beautiful family!!!

  8. Don’t fish look bigger in the water than when you pull them out? For a child, they tell it as they saw it. Cute!I loved the hamburger incident too. Grace will remember that one for a very long time. Experience often teaches the best.

  9. Ha ha!!  You had me laughing outloud!  Toasting frozen hamburger patties is too funny!  I loved the story of Davy’s fishing experience.  My grandpa used to take us fishing, and grandma usually had a can of dirt and worms in the fridge.  I look forward to seeing Davy’s first catch!

  10. OH my, what a trip!  I love the frozen hamburger patties…that is so great.  Alex has been dying to fish, too…Casey loves to fish, too.  I love the pictures of David and Rich, so similar they really are. 🙂

  11. LOL!  That is hilarious!  I loved the story about Davy.  I can just imagine him telling about the big one he missed.  I hope you are having an excellent week & that you have a great weekend with Colleen.  I can’t wait to hear and see about it!  Love you! Lish

  12. ROTFL over the “waffles” !
Davy-Do is so precious. Thank you Lord for blessing him (and his brothere)with a daddy who is there to teach him how to be a boy and one day a man

  13. LOL~ on the hamburgers ! at least she gave it a try! 🙂 I would have had a hard time not busting a laugh on that too! :)sweet pictures and fishing for little boy Davy there. what a nice thing, yes, that you can fish close to home~ we did some fishing ourselves this day — though I had to drive the kiddos 20 minutes… and we used sand buckets to catch! ha. well, our’s were not so big of fish 😉 I do think our crews might have a fine time together fishing about~BlessingsAlyssa

  14. What a lovely story today about your little fisherman!  And I had to laugh along with everybody at the waffles — what a disappointment!

  15. And some of my best fishing days were those when I caught no fish.  Just the quiet, the water, the outdoors soothed my soul.
Hamburger patties in the toaster?  TOO FUNNY!
