compliments to the chef (?)

I’ve been chuckling over this since dinner time.  I made steak and the kids do NOT like any redness in their steak.  I cooked it “well-done” just for them.  After I served them all, I sat down in the livingroom w/Rich and a little while later we overheard these dramatic words from Ethan:

“Oh this steak!!!  I’ve been chewing it for hours!  Just one piece!  It’s gum!!  Everlasting gum!”

If that’s not insulting I don’t know what is!  LOL

  1. We raise beef and I still haven’t mastered the art of making steak properly. Maybe I should practice that for a while instead of memorizing Valancy’s story again! I love it when her cousin hasn’t any more power over her and her family is just agast at her actions.  Heres to the sisterhood of kindred spirits!

  2. That is too funny! I remember one time, when we were living in the D.R., we were going to surprise the pastors visiting with us for a pastor’s conference with a steak dinner…  The problem was, the two guys grilling the steaks did so over wood & sticks and not coal.  It took forever, and finally they served it.  Everyone was chewing FOREVER!  The funny thing was, about an hour later, we went to the local pizza shop by the beach, and most of the pastors were there too!!! LOL

  3. ryc:  Try this link:  http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/community/aboutus/retail-detail.jsp?detailedInformationURL=/cabelas/en/content/community/aboutus/retail/retail_stores/easthartford/easthartford.html&cm_re=home022708*right*retail_dropdown.  That should take you to the Cabela’s near you.  Although much of the store is geared to hunting, there is also a lot of camping and fishing gear.  Your children would love the aquarium and the amazing animals.  I think most Cabela’s have aquariums and the taxidermy displays.  Ours also has a restaurant featuring wild game meals and sandwiches.

  4. Hee heee—-  I have cooked some steaks like that! I try to marinade, and that helps a little, but some steaks just dry out when they are cooked too much. I had to get used to cooking Danish meats, as they contain much less fat than what I was used to. Beef and pork are very lean here, and it’s easy to dry them out when cooking. Then, as Ethan put it so well you have everlasting gum!

  5. My first reaction to steak was the same as Ethan’s. I didn’t try it again until I started dating Nathan, now I love it but I like mine pink, not well done. 🙂 When he is older the two of you will laugh about it! Love you

  6. I can kill a steak faster than say it. Josh grilled some this weekend for the three of us. I had nearly forgotten what beef tasted like in it’s purest form.BUT we have been making roasted veggies almost every night! and Beth made them for her dorm sisters last night. Thanks again for that recipe!
Someday Ethan will be asking, “Where’s the beef” mom?” what fun! love you, m

  7. Oh, that brought back so many memories of dinner with my mom and dad. I would sit there chewing for ages the meat that she”cooked” lol! I would usually give up and spit it into my napkin and sneak it into the trash when they weren’t looking. Knowwhat, I think I did that a lot with dinners she made! Thanks for letting me remember those times!!

  8. LOL – that’s GREAT! Ethan has an impressive vocabulary for expressing himself – “everlasting gum!” Maybe you’ve discovered a new recipe for a type of beef jerky…
