(picking apples)

My husband and I took the kids apple picking today.  As you can see, our youngest is enjoying his first time picking apples.  You might wonder what happened to his blue jeans–well, he got a hold of a crayon when we were traveling in the van.  Guess he was bored just sitting in his carseat and decided to embellish his pants.  When I turned around and saw what he was doing I said, “NO! Don’t do that!” and he got startled and cried like I had broken his heart.  You gotta wonder sometimes—do these babies just not know something is wrong until they get caught at it the first time??

An armful of apples from bright brown eyes.

I took this picture during the tractor ride:

Anyway, it was a gorgeous day for apples, cider, and donuts.  We enjoyed our sweet children.  I loved how D put his apples in his hat–no putting them in the communal 1/2 bushel bags for him!  And C, with his three apples, eating them all at once!  J and E shined and shined their apples before they ate them.  And Daughter was so focused, she just had to get those apples picked!

Later on, this evening, I gave my daughter her first apple peeling lesson and we made a pot of applesauce.

Sorry about the large size of the pictures.  Once again, I have exceeded my uploads for the month and had to use photobucket.

Well, this mama is tired so off to bed I go.  Good night!  Sweet dreams!

  1. The children and the apples all look very sweet! Wow, apple-picking is something I have never done, and it looks like sooo much fun! From the looks of the sweaters on Caleb and Grace, you all are enjoying some cool weather. We have only had brief episodes of it down here in the south, and I am looking forward to more extended periods of cooler temperatures.

  2. Oh, I love it! You made sweet memories today! Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures ~ Caleb’s expressions are just priceless!
It’s a tradition for us to go to our local farm & orchard each year around our wedding anniversary. (Last year we missed it because I went into labor with Noah!) I can’t wait to go again and enjoy it with our little ones!
Hope you get lots of restful sleep! Good night! 🙂

  3. ohh… what beautiful pictures of such beautiful children! i would love to be able to go apple picking. we have two trees in our yard, and we usually get a ton of apples, but this year the late frost killed all the flowers.

  4. Loved the apple picking pictures! =)  I often get a bushel of apples in the fall, but didn’t this year.  Have fun making applesauce and whatever else you do with them.  I enjoy making a pan of apple dumplings every so often, and like to can apple pie filling too.  Yummy stuff~

  5. I just made applesauce the other day!  That is to funny about Caleb.   I like in the picture with all the kids he has taken bites out of all of his apples:)   It looks like you had a great day!

  6. You are making such wonderful memories for your children. They will look back and remember all the happy times like this, spent with Mom and Dad.  It is so heartwarming. Thank you for sharing all of this with us. Makes me wanna come live with you! :o)

  7. The best part of that last picture is your oldest son’s arm around your youngest son……and I bet you didn’t even have to ask him to protect his little brother….he just did it.  I usually make lots of apple sauce, apple pies, and even some apple jelly each fall, but this year our trees hardly had any apples at all :o(  ……lack of bees in our area…….looks like maybe all the bees went back east :o)   lovely pictures..cherish every moment :o)

  8. What a wonderful day Shanda!!!  I love apple pickin’ I am planning on taking the kids and the 2 littles I watch next week.  It’s always so much fun, and we love love love apples.  My daughter and I just got done making some apple strusel coffee cake for breakfast tomorrow.

  10. I’m just fallen in love with your children…how I’d love to hear their voices someday. Each of them have such dear expressions. The photo of David placing his apples in his hat is award winning..you are getting very good at using that new camera!

  11. Hello…. I had subbed to you a while ago, but haven’t been on much lately.  Came by today to say hello… LOVE the Apple Picking pics, your kids are beautiful, and I love how they interact with each other in front of the camera.  You have a good eye!  I love that you are a Christian and are home schooling your kids.  Kuddos to you!  Hugs from NH!

  12. That picture of Caleb is precious! I also like the way his brother has his arm protectively around him in the wagon, and those three apples with bites out of them! Too funny! As far as kids not knowing things are wrong until they are “caught” the first time….. I still remember when my Abby was a little too quiet (You know with a toddler, that may be dangerous! )  I called up the stairs, “What are you doing, Abby?” And her reply, “I’m just writin’ on the wallpaper, Mommy!”

  13. I confess the warm donut sign had me quit envious!  Mmmm
Your pictures speak volumes of your love for your family.  Thank you so much for sharing them with us.  I am no photographer at all.  My husband takes beautiful pictures.  I wish I could post family pictures on my blog but my husband is wary of that so I will do as he asks and not post family pictures.  I will ask him if I can post his others though.
    Have a lovely Sunday
    ~ Gina

  14. Looks like a beautiful fall outing.  I love how Caleb has three apples in his arms and has eaten some of each one.  He must’ve been so excited to see all those apples.  The picture of Grace is beautiful.

  15. Sounds like you had a lovely Saturday. I wish here in SE Texas we could go apple picking, but apple trees do not grow this far south. *sigh* One day we will make it up North about 6 hours and then we can do that too!

  16. This time of year is great for being outside. I am so glad we live in New England.  The cool crisp air makes the children look rosie and healthy. The picture of the kids in the wagon was my favorite.

  17. Mmm — apple-picking is one of my favorite excursions.  And your photos are so lovely I can almost feel the cooler air and smell the apples on the trees and the pies and applesauce cooking at each “apple farm.”  What a fun day you had!

  18. DH and I picked apples yesterday as well…Somehow, I don’t think that photos of a couple of older folks chawing on apples would make for as cute a post as yours of your sweet family.Nope…not goin’ there.:o)

  19. Can you tell me what camera you use?  I know a lot of how nice your pictures turn out is because of the photographer, not the camera, but I am thinking I might be in the market and was just wondering.
    What a beautiful day!

  20. Precious, precious memory making!  Your children are beautiful and you certainly captured their spirits in these photos : )  Thanks for sharing your outing! p.s.  love the piggy pointer : )

  21. Precious, precious memory making! Your children are beautiful, and what a fun time of togetherness. You captured their spirits in every photo.  Thanks for sharing your outing : )  p.s. Love the piggy pointer.

  22. ohhhh that looks like so much fun…. i wish we had somewhere close where i live to pick apples 🙂 (we live in TX) i can just smell the homemade applesauce yummmy 🙂 God bless, Laura

  23. Just got back from a week away ~ and oh what a blessing to open your site ~ I thought I loved the first photo, then I saw the second, then the one of Caleb’s 3 apples ~ well goodness me, I just love them all.  Now I’m in the mood to cook up some apples, but alas ~ no time for that ~

  24. What a very fun tradition and thing to do with your kids!  its really cool that Rich goes along too.  I hear about so many couples where the mom takes them to do all the fun things while dad is at work.  Sometimes its hard not to but it makes it even more special when both parents are there.  I love the photo’s by the way.  Love, Lish
