a sweet two

“But the child born on the Sabbath Day,
Is fair and wise and good and gay.”  ~ 1838 nursery rhyme

Sarah Joy was born on a Sunday morning.

Back those two years ago, the last picture I took with my camera before taking *the next one of my newborn baby girl*, was of the newly bloomed peonies in the flower bed.  Forevermore, these lovely flowers will be, in my mind, “Sarah’s”.

(@ just a few days old)

I purchased a few little gifts for her yesterday.  But, during Seth and Sarah’s naptime I got to thinking, how I would really like to make something for her.  I got out my sewing stuff and put together a pretty skirt, and even trimmed it with darling pink ric rac.  When I put it on her, I laughed and said, “You look like a princess!”

I made it while she was sleeping, and consequently the length is a little off….however, I suppose this way she’ll get more wear out of it.

My mom bought her a vintage baby doll bed for her birthday, which she was very pleased about.

We gave her little wrapped presents and watched her open them.  A few of her brothers got impatient, but I made them leave her alone.  She opened them all by herself.

Her lap of goodies.

We made her cake together.  It was delicious.  I found a recipe online for a strawberry cake and I baked it in a heart shaped pan.  We decorated it with homemade frosting (I used my own favorite recipe, instead of the allrecipe’s one) with bits of strawberries mixed in, & green and pink candies.

We sang a rousing rendition of HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and then dug in.

Happy 2nd birthday to our wonderful little girl.  We love you, Sarah!

  1. Loved the one where she was opening her gift….oooooooh…..The one with the peony, too. Love those. Should always be the traditional shot year after year, yes?I had peonies for my wedding. My elderly neighbor had many bushes and he told me I could have as many as I wanted for my wedding day.Such a generous gentleman. He was a POW during WWI.I digress.Lovely party photos of your dear girl.xo

  2. I have dug up and replanted the yellow Rudbeckia’s that bloomed the morning that my Rebekah was born. Those flowers have been hauled from Atlanta to Colorado to three different homes in NC and are now- 16 years later blooming in front of my home. They are “Rebekah’s” and I will always keep them…..much like your peonies.Happy Birthday to your Sarah. She’s a precious, precious little one! I like your facial expressions.

  3. I remember when you had a peony in picture when she was so little. I can’t believe she’s 2 already!Time goes by so fast.I love the little skirt you made for her. What a special gift. I like the length, it looks so sweet on her.My mom just made Allison a skirt..she loves it.That cake looks really good…you need to post the recipe! =)Happy Birthday to Sarah!!!

  4. happy birthday sarah!i know this sounds all cliche’ and like i’m 92…but oh my. i can’t believe she’s THAT old already. something about the Broadmoor in The Springs pops into my brain. but maybe that was seth! 🙂 the pictures are cute, love all those kids around the table, the peonies and pink cake!

  5. Awww… so precious! I love making things for my sweet little granddaughter. It’s just something about having a little girl! When my girls were little, I did not have as much time as I do not, too. I am working on a little crocheted jumper. I hope I have estimated the size right, because I do not have Sianna close to measure! Better a little too big than too small, though, right? Happy birthday little Sarah!

  6. Happy birthday to sweet little Sarah! We share the same birthday and I usually have strawberries with my cake, now you have me wanting to bake a strawberry cake. Such a cute little birthday outfit…

  7. I want peonies and hydangeas in my yard sooo bad, I thInk that is wonderful that a certain flower makes you think of your daughter!  I am working on a skirt now for coco with rick rack, yours looks so dear and you are right she will grow into it abd be able to wear it longer because of the length!  Happy happy birthaday Sarah!

  8. Happy Birthday to your daughter.  What a celebration.  Thanks for sharing it.  We’ve just adopted two more boys.  They are both two. I love that age.

  9. She CANNOT be two already! If she is, then my baby will be soon too! Sigh. Goes so fast. The other day my oldest used a blanket to make herself a long skirt and danced around. Into my mind flashed the memory of digging through my aunt’s dresser to find her long skirts, which on me were even longer, and how much I liked to wear them. I made a note to embellish the dress up box soon.

  10. Happy birthday to your lovely little girl! She’s just too adorable! And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the skirt you made her! The length and fullness and fabric, it’s all so sweet and youthful…
