sugar cookies made with a friend

 poor baby

Before we talk cookies, I would like to ask you to pray for our little Sarah Joy.  We’ve had a nasty cold going around the family, a cold that includes a terrible cough.  I didn’t tell you before, but a few weeks ago Seth had to go on antibiotics for bronchitis.  The littlest members of the family get hit worse, and Sarah has developed croup.  She was so feverish and miserable yesterday morning that Rich and I took her to the ER for a breathing treatment and a steroid shot.  She woke up this morning a little better but she’s running a fever again now, and her cough sounds yucky….so pray that she will get better soon, and not any worse.  Happily, she is eating and drinking nicely, and gets up to play now and then, and is still a pretty little darling despite the circles under her eyes.  Very snuggly, too.

She’s been sleeping a lot.  This morning, while she was napping peacefully upstairs in her sunny bedroom, her big brother Seth and I decided to make cookies.

First of all, I put an apron on him and laughed at the cuteness.  Turns out, he really needed that apron this time.

He was a big helper by dumping in the ingredients for our cookies.

He even did the eggs.  “You tap it on the edge and open it over the bowl.”  Then, throw the eggshell over into the kitchen sink (he missed).  Three eggs.

We moved to the table and rolled out our dough.  Seth’s dough didn’t roll out right.

It was more satisfying to dump out all the flour.  Do you have enough yet, Seth?

DSC_0626

No.  He wants it ALL.

You’re cute.  Isn’t this fun?

We started getting some cookies baked….after devoring five, fresh from the oven, Seth hopped down from his chair.

The recipe makes tray after tray after tray……tiring.  I’m not a big fan of rolling and cutting out dough.  I get impatient.  But, it just seemed right today.  A nice, plain, cakey, sugar cookie day, with a hint of nutmeg.

ANOTHER cookie, Seth?

It was so cute when I realized that he wanted to “bake” some in his oven, too.

So, we made him a toy cookie sheet, custom fit for his oven.  I took a piece of cardboard out of the recycling bin, ut it to size, and covered it with tin foil.

In the oven they went.

Then, he set the timer (look at his toes).  “Buzzzzzzzz!”  They’re done.

Be careful, they’re sliding off!  Your cookies look great.

lots and lots of cookies

I’ve used the same sugar cookie recipe for years.  You can find it HERE.

When Ethan came home from school today, he had a hunger that surpassed cookies.

So, he got right to work and made this, all on his own:

(The waffles were made using a mix.)

He even took the picture.  I wasn’t home when he made this fabulous snack, and he wanted me to see it.  (I was gone picking up Jacob from the library.)

  1. I have that same kind of “bug” – probably becaue my resistance was down due to a very busy schedule the past few weeks – even through the weekends. I wasn’t even sure I could go to Connecticut. So I took today off to just rest. I needed a ‘sabbath’.You are an incredibly good mamma to allow Seth to make his own mess as he made cookies. They look so delicious. Sugar cookies are my favorite.

  2. Those cookies look so good. I too am not a fan of rolling and cutting and rolling and cutting and rolling and cutting and…..it seems to go on forever. However, I am a fan of sugar cookies, so it’s worth it. =) We made chocolate chip peanut butter cookies this afternoon. Sam just put another pan into the oven.Seth is such a good little helper, so cute in his little apron. I LOVE that little kitchen set!My girls and I will pray for Sarah right now. They were looking at pictures over my shoulder and wondered what was wrong with the baby. =)Thank you for giving us sweet little glimpses of your life…I love coming over here.Happy Monday to you.

  3. Awww, lifting up sweet baby girl right now. Hope she improves rapidly. David seems to be fighting it the last couple days but is taking lots of packets of emergen-C and hoping to beat it. You and Seth are such bakers! Wow, I am sure he loved that. YUMMY too!

  4. such a fun little project with your sweet little Seth.saying a prayer for Sarah just now…croup is NOT fun! we have had some scares with each of our kids the last couple years and it is something you do not wish to repeat! hoping you have the strength you need to care for her too…

  5. I’ll be keeping your daughter in our prayers! I hope she kicks it soon! And it looks like you and Seth had a wonderful cookie session! Yummy! And that after school snack made my tummy rumble! Yummmy!

  6. By now, I hope Sarah has recovered from the worst of her croup.  I’m not a huge fan of sugar cookie making, but I LOVE the idea of adding nutmeg AND I love Seth’s oven. Ethan’s snack is something I would love to have right now….great comfort food there!!

  7. I had croup often when I was little. I think it was really bronchitis but they didn’t call it that then. My grandmother used to put something like Vicks on my chest and cover it with flannel. She also boiled water in a teakettle, and then put a dish towel over it and I had to breathe it. (I assume they turned off the gas first.)One easy thing to do for a croupy child is to run the hot water in the bathroom and sit and hold them while they breathe the steamy air, but maybe you already know that. Hope she gets better soon.

  8. Praying for Sarah, poor little thing. It’s so hard when an illness affects the little one’s breathing, makes a momma worry a little extra. Eating, drinking are good signs though! The cookies look like a perfect fall afternoon snack! Thanks for sharing the recipe too. I always love stopping by your blog Shanda šŸ™‚

  9. I hope little Sarah recovers soon. I always think of Anne of Green Gables and the ipecac bottle when it comes to croup – aren’t we all glad medicine has developed so much more from those days? Though I know even Anne and Diana couldn’t show Minnie May more love than you all are giving to Sarah! What fun pictures of baking with Seth. Love the Star Wars apron, and now I want to make cookies today!

  10. Praying for little Sarah when my children was small they too got croup and was sick a lot and made many of trips to the Er as they grew older they out grew most of it Your cookies looks so good Thanks for sharing

  11. poor sarah~ sure hope she is feeling some better now. it’s always so pitiful when little ones are sick.seth’s cookies turned out looking yuM!i love how you let your kids in the kitchen w/ you, shanda! that’s something i need to do more of.so many great memories for sure!

  12. I always enjoy visiting you, here, but I didn’t enjoy hearing Sarah was feeling under the weather. I’ll add her to my prayers. I grew up with bronchitis, which sometimes went into pneumonia, so I have a first hand appreciation (or lack thereof) of how miserable you can feel. I’ve snatched another recipe from you! Between dessert recipes and your recommended books for reading . . . all I need is time to enjoy sitting, eating cookies, and reading a book – ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!! xo xo
