The children and I went to the library this week. Not just any library, but the one in a different town, much BIGGER, with MORE books, DIFFERENT BOOKS, with a librarian who SMILED and OFFERED to HELP and complimented the children! Truly enough to set the heart a flutter. I spent the majority of my time in the children’s section (with a brief trip into the adult military section, with a couple of handsome teen boys). As the little ones played with puzzles and toys, I picked out a few books to read to them later on, at home. One of the books I found was “love at first read”.
PETER’S POCKET is one of the cutest books we’ve read. Judi Barrett (author of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) wrote a darling story, and Julia Noonan drew sweet, realistic illustrations.
The story is about a little boy, almost four, who collects any and every small thing and puts them into his pockets. We see pictures of the small objects–crayons, marbles, raisins. We see pictures of Peter’s clothes that have pockets. But, oh dear! There just aren’t enough pockets and some of his clothes don’t have any pockets at all. So, what does Peter’s thoughtful, wonderful, special mommy do? She sews her little boy more and more pockets, to pin onto his clothes.
“Peter had pockets on everything now.”

And that’s not all. The last page of the book includes a pattern and directions for your very own “portable pin-on pockets.”
It doesn’t get much more precious than this.
Love that book!
Oh how cute! We will have to look for that book. I know a child or two of mine that would LOVE a portable pocket!I have never read anything else by this author except Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.Every once in a while we visit the Bigger library in the different town.It is fun for a change. I also like that I can return the books from the big library to our library and they take them back for us.Thank you for sharing…Happy Saturday to you. =)
I’ll have to look for that book for Levi — he will love it!!!
so cute!
I love reading good children’s books to my kids.
I love your joy in the simple things of life…..after all, life is meant to be lived and enjoyed and our children are only young once.
A happy visit to the library is a small joy in life for sure! Little boys always need pockets to put all their finds in. I suspect little girls do too! Nick was my biggest squirrel and used to wear a “fanny pack” to put all his finds into. What a cute book.
That book looks great! My boys are always collecting things whenever we go on walks. I will look for it at our library.
thats so sweet…bet your kids will be mass-producing pockets from now on!
That does look like a very cute book!!
Looks like such a cute little book for wee ones. 🙂 I’m sensing mommy is going to be making some pin on pockets eh! 😉
That does look like a cute book. I love going to the library. It’s fun.
that is just adorable. and yes. how fun to have a library with a smiling librarian. they really are the best kind to have! 😉
hi shanda…….i just love those old-fashioned, sweet books. so glad you enjoyed your time at the new library. that is on my agenda with the boys this summer, visiting other local libraries!
So glad the librarian smiled at you—I know what a difference that makes! It is amazing how affected I have been by our librarians, to the point of losing sleep and eventually switching libraries. Happy reading to you.
