sarah and sand

After we arrived at our hotel on February 13th, and settled in, we took Sarah outside and sat her down.

I was ready with the camera to document her first glimpses of sand and ocean.   She was so cute.

First she looked one way.

Then she looked the other way.

Down.

Mama.

Mama?

That was that.  She looked unsure so I scooped her up and we went on a walk.  The next morning, I sat her down she had thought about it a lot and decided that she hated the beach.

For the remainder of our visit (until one last try right before we left), she stiffened, flailed out her arms, opened her hands, and wailed every time I put her down on the beach.  Even if I spread out a blanket, she was scared.  Was it the sound of the waves crashing?  It can be sort of scary sounding if you aren’t used to it, I suppose.

(By the way, on the 14th, she did wear her Valentine’s Day dress that I had made her.  I had found a pair of red knit capris, with bows on them and also a short sleeved sweater, to match.)  She was our pretty Valentine’s baby, even when she had her I*hate*this*dirty*sand melt-down.

We didn’t torture her.  It was nice, actually, to hold her in my arms by the seaside.  She was so content and quiet there.

  1. Aw, Poor baby! My Christina was that way, and I would sometimes set her outside on a warm summer day in her walker on the lawn, and she would hold her little feet up like she was sure there was a great toe snatching dragon lurking just below the grass. And object loudly. But she got over it, and Sarah will, too. After all, she’s your offspringin’ and she doesn’t stand a chance at being adverse to natural things like sand and water.

  2. You capture the best moments, Shanda. Sarah Joy will be able to look at these pictures when she is older and know that even before she could recall memories she knew she was special and loved so very much by her family.

  3. Oh I just love that little meltdown face!!  She’s a girlie girl to the core isn’t she?  And the dress is beautiful.  And the sunshine is beautiful.  I’m soooo very glad you got some time away.

  4. Shanda, She is oh so very sweet even if she didn’t like the sand. Although I think as she gets older she’ll come to love the beach like her Mama. What a lovely get-a-way. I’m already thinking of a little cabin in the woods get-a-way when my soldier returns. I can hardly wait!~Cinnamon

  5. She is so cute anyway. You are right, she probably felt vulnerable. I wonder if our were just used to the sound or that they were boys, they always just wanted to dig in it.
