you’re walking in the quiet, snowy woods

If you only could have been with me.  Your cheeks would have gotten chilly, like mine.  You would have heard the quiet.  You would feel, with your feet, the soft nothingness of the snow as you walked along.

You would have admired the trees; the pines, the shag bark hickory, the white birch.

You would have heard the chattering of birds, all of a sudden when they saw you; the big bluejays were scolding, the funny chickadees were innocently in their own little worlds.  You would have caught your breath, like I did, when you saw the bright red of a cardinal.

You would have stood under the tree with me, when I shook it.  The snow from up above would have fallen on you, and around you, gently.

You would have listened to the flowing, gurgling stream.  Admired the pretty ice.  Thanked God for his amazing creativeness.  Noticed the glittering of the snow, all golden as it fell from the trees.  The sunshine made everything look gorgeous.

You would have laughed at yourself as you crawled across the stream, nervously, over rocks and ice.  You wouldn’t have fallen in!

Your toes and hands would have been cold as you made your way back to the house, but your heart would be light and happy, from being out in God’s big beautiful world.

Hope the pictures helped you feel like you were there.  I took them just for you.

  1. Beautiful photos! I started a post yesterday called “Come for a Summer Walk” — the photos won’t be as pretty as yours, though, given that we are in the city.

  2. Such lovely pictures and poem. Makes me miss living in the pretty state of Connecticut. We’re actually scheduled to get some snow here in NC tomorrow. We shall see. πŸ™‚

  3. hi shanda…….i so cherish your photos – and they certainly do show God’s beautiful creation.  I would have LOVED to have been on the walk with you today in person!!

  4. I would have loved to share the walk with you.  There is something so still and calm about snow over everything.  don’t know if  would have liked the snow shaken down on me from the tree though.  We used to do that to each other as kids when the branches were wet after a rain.  wow, the chill =).  Thanks for sharing the pictures.  Love the vibrant green of the evergreens against the dark and the snow.  Sunbeams through the branches is very lovely.Blessings friend.

  5. You are so right ~ I would have! ~ all of the things you said ~ especially, I would have enjoyed the birds ~   Thank you for sharing your walk with me ~

  6. Thanks for taking us on the chilly, beautiful walk.  Being from Southeast Florida, I don’t get to enjoy your snowy beauty.  I just finished or should I say, my crockpot just finished cooking that delicious beef stew receipe you shared last year.  Yummy!

  7. Wonderful snowy walk Shanda! I loved it. I am sure your kids can imagine so many situations in Early American History with those woods so close by. We would read about them and David would wish for some forest to explore.

  8. Beautiful pictures, and wonderful descriptive writing- that did make me feel like I was there. I could almost feel the tingling in my cheeks from the cold ☺ we should be getting some snow tonight, we are all looking forward to it!

  9. I could hear footsteps crunch the snow. as we (friends) walked together. I could see and hear your breath (and mine), as we climbed on those slippery rocks across the stream together! And, yes, we laughed when you shook that one tree and the snow fell down on and around us! Thanks for the visit, Shanda! I always enjoy being with you. : )

  10. Beautiful! I Love the stream and snow together!  πŸ™‚   We are covered in ice here in Ga. today! Very unusual and lots of fun for the children!  Thanks for all the lovely pictures and posts you share… very inspiring. πŸ™‚
