giving just a little bit of time……

I was running around, in the midst of a very busy morning, trying to clean up the house before it got out of control, not really listening to little boys who were following me around, just aching for a bit of my time……

After a while, I realized what I was doing and I stopped the scrubbing.  The house work I had accomplished that morning was good enough

“Davy, do you want to go for a walk with me?  Let’s go to the field and see if we can find some caterpillars!”

“Okay!”

We left the house with Jacob in charge of the sleeping babies and away we went.

The two of us.

We held hands.

We looked at the stream.

He talked a lot and I listened, really listened.

We admired a big huge pine tree and Davy climbed it.

We saw a fallen down tree across the trail.

We admired the wood, noticed the many layers inside, and took a piece home with us as a souvenir.

The field was lovely, spicy, buzzing, and hot.

We didn’t see any caterpillars.  We did see some interesting bugs.  David said that he wants to learn more about interesting bugs.  These particular ones were long, red with black spots, and had long black antennae.

We found a couple red ripe raspberries at the edge of the woods.  We ate them.

There are no apples growing on the wild apple tree this year.

We found some mysterious round purple berries.  We didn’t eat them.

Saw a beautiful butterfly.

And another interesting bug: a colorful beetle that proved to be camera shy.

Admired the moss in the woods.  It was like a carpet! (said David)

Enjoyed the lovely pine woods that belong to us, on our property.  “We should bring a picnic table back here!” (said Mama)

We walked back home and that little walk has brought a smile to my face whenever I think about it.

I’m so thankful for moments like that during these busy days.

  1. Good job momma for being willing to stop and just “be” with your kiddos.  I bet your son was super thrilled to get your undivided attention for a time.  And as we all know, the housework will always be there, the sweet children won’t.

  2. So glad you listened to that prompting and had such a lovely time with Davey. My David has a book called ” Fun with Nature – Take-along quide” by North Word Press that he would drag along or take out and pour over when he was younger. Your walk reminded me of those wonderful exploring, wandering, discovering kind of days!

  3. I just about picked up a book to read for myself when I saw “Despereaux” sitting there. I picked it up and asked Sam if he wanted me to read more to him, and he did. I’m glad I sat there and read to him instead of reading to myself. I know it is these small things they’ll remember. Thanks for always encouraging me towards this!Oh, and our babies appear to be boys although the ultrasound lady wasn’t 100% sure about one of them. We will have another in a few weeks. I am hoping we will be able to tell for sure…I have to figure out what clothes I need, etc. 🙂 It is exciting. I was really hoping for a boy/girl set, but I’m getting used to the idea of TWO boys at the SAME TIME!!! 🙂

  4. Then one thing I’ve learned about you in reading your posts is that you seem to do really well with taking the time to do one-on-one things with your children.  And considering the number you have, that is so admirable!

  5. I cannot believe how long it has been since I have signed on. I miss you!! Your description of the field was so perfect and I love that I can imagine just where it was!  So special to have that little date with your son!

  6. Aren’t you glad you listened to the Spirit’s whisperings….what a blessing to be able to spend time with your children like that….those moments are precious and priceless.

  7. So wonderful you dropped the housework to go for the walk. You’ll always have a house to clean, you won’t always have a little boy at home who wants to go for a walk with his mommy… so awesome you know that now.

  8. i was just thinking the other day about how long its been since i read Laura Ingalls Wilder and how much i ADORED those books. i’m so glad that you’ve been able to read them with your kids. thanks for sharing with us about your journey.
