the runners

DSC_8626

One of the things I love about family life is being able to share in each other’s favorite activities.  Now that five of the children are old enough, Rich is thrilled to have his very own team of runners.  During the last four evenings, after the heat of the day, he has told the children to get their socks and sneakers on so they can go running with him.  They all pile into the vehicle, and he takes them downtown to the local High School track.  After they are done running, the children report to their Dad how many laps they did so he can translate the laps into miles & praise them (he reports to me when they get home, and I smile, because he’s happy and proud of them).  They do very well, but Jacob especially has recently turned into quite the runner, running up to four miles (16 laps) nonstop.

On their way home, they swing by the ice cream place for a treat.

Rich says he is making memories and he’s right.  The children love every minute they spend with him.

  1. I love it!My dad always took all of us kids running and walking with him, too. Some of my best memories are of us doing that together on the winding country road that led from our house.

  2. Very cool! I love your “picture” a day b/c I know how busy you must be amd it’s nice to be able and get a peek, even though I REALLY miss your long blogs, they are like my morning cup of coffee 🙂 LOL

  3. Definately making memories.  Oh, I totally get the ice cream after the run…I used to plan what I was eating after I left the gym;) (not sure the trainers quite approved…)

  4. So wonderful. Training their bodies, but all that time with Dad for talking, eating icecream…spell memories and happiness. I always loved it when mom and dad would say we could all go for a bike ride together.

  5. How awesome that your kids do not have a “couch potato” for a dad! He is so smart to get them excited about exercise in a fun way. Those memories will last a  life time. Boy, I think that photo is neat. Love the photo…

  6. That’s awesome! That is what my dad did with us growing up. The highschool track, or the beach sand close to home, where ever, we would all pile in the car and go run together. It is a wonderful memory for me and to this day, I like to run. Special times w/ my dad. So great – 16 laps is a lot to go! You may just have a long distance runner on your hands!
