turtle catching

What would you do if you caught a turtle?  Would you run to the house to get a permanent marker so you could write it’s name on the bottom of it’s shell?

That’s what my boys do!  This particular turtle was caught by Davy.  It’s name is “Having a Good New Life” and he is an old friend.

Davy caught two other turtles recently.  He named them David (after himself) and Sharpie (after the permanent marker).

Someone please please freeze these days for me so they never end!

  1. Both this post and the last have made me think so much of Elizabeth Enright’s books! The luna moth made me think of Oliver Melendy and his adventures with moths and butterflies, and this post put me in mind of Foster and Davie from the Gone-Away books, and the time they found a turtle that had been caught and named by a boy over fifty years earlier. Those books, to me, seem the epitome of happy childhood. As do these posts!

  2. “Sharpie” every child everywhere is alike! I love how they name things the first thing that comes to mind!!!Such fun!I was just thinking last night how I would love to bring my children to your house.

  3. so neat,i would do the same thing..even now.LOL not a bad idea,i wonder how long the marker would last? It would be so neat if he caught the same turtle next year and could tell by the marker!(Turtles are my favorite!)

  4. My girls would love discovering things with your kids!:)The book you described sounds beautiful!I am thinking and praying for you and the soon to come new baby! Our little Florence Rylan just arrived on Monday night… Our 8th daughter!:)God will be with you… His yoke is light and His burden easy…. You will do great! Trust and rest in Him!:)

  5. My daughters fave summer past time is “saving” turtles. She names each one, marks them and even records her findings including the condition of thier shell, the food she gave them, the type of turtle and the size in a little notebook. One summer all her turtles names started with “T’s” the names got pretty creative by the end of the summer!! 🙂 Turtles are great- but remember that if the shell is less than 4″ in diameter that the chance of them carrying salmonella is increased immensely!! Turtles are one of the biggest salmonella spreaders ….so make sure to wash everyones hands after handling them. :)Hope your turtle SHELLABRATION last all year! 🙂

  6. It was good to visit you, here, and see you were able to put up a few new pictures! You are on my mind constantly, as I know it “won’t be long, now” and I pray for a healthy baby and momma! Also praying for helpful people to surround you!

  7. There’s an idea! I would have never thought to write on them. I didn’t think the writting would stay. That’s great. Do you think the turtles will still have their names written on when the boys are grown and bring their children up to catch turtles in that pond? That would be so awesome!

  8. You are freezing them by writing them! Oh what a cool thing to do, so they can see which ones hang around for the summer! And soon you will have sweet Sarah in the front pouch and you will be feeling well and maybe have a bit more energy and how wonderful the summer will be! His blessings be upon you and your day Shanda.

  9. So special these days are!!! And so sweet you will have them kept on your blog…I wish I blogged when my oldest 2 were littler!! And I can’t wait to see baby Sarah’s sweet face and in your arms! Have a wonderful day today friend!

  10. Your boys are just so great!!!I enjoyed this and the last couple of nature posts. I have read “Freckles,” and I think “The Girl of Limberlost,” as well, but this prompted me to do a re-read. That moth is so beautiful! I’m glad you’ve been able to enjoy being out and in nature before Sarah is born. ❤

  11. Oh I love this. The best thing I have read all day! Your boys are so sweet! Freeze the moment – I think you did. Hope you are feeling well!!~Tiffanywww.amomentcherished.com
