a pretty quilt

My friend Kathy and I went out for breakfast this morning, and when we were done we had some extra time to stop by an antique store.  It was a lot of fun to wander around, talking and looking at things.

I came away with a chicken waterer.  The base was missing, so they had it paired with an old tin pie plate instead.  I really like the country rustic look to it and plan on using it for my chickens.

The little, heavy (sand filled?) satin pin holder called my name, and so did the wooden tulips for my garden.

My favorite find was an old quilt.  I absolutely love it….whoever made it used such bright and beautiful fabrics and obviously had a substantial stash of well-chosen material to create with.

The quilt is full-sized and the top and back are a light, cool cotton.  On the next hot day I plan on washing it gently in my washer, and laying it outside in the grass to dry in the sunshine.

I can picture us cuddling on the couch, or outside in the hammock with it.

We will take it along on adventures;  a few family summertime picnics will be all the more glorious with this feast for our eyes.

  1. Hi Shanda :-}  I have always thought that quilts provide ‘spirit’ warmth. Yes, some quilts also provide warmth on a bed, or when cuddled under reading a book. But just looking at a quilt can give you a ‘warm fuzzy’ type of ‘spirit’ warmth. Hopefully, that makes sense to you.    I refer to time out with a girlfriend as “thereapy” time. It’s far cheaper than seeing an actual ‘therapist’. Girlfriends are far more likely to get to the root of what’s bothering us than a trained therapist is. And even more than a quilt does, girlfriend therapy time sooths our souls in oh such wondourous ways!!!    Packages, cute cards, “therapy time”, all in one week.   The Lord has heard our prayers on your behalf and has answered them as asked. THANK-YOU Lord!!!!! Please continue to strengthen and encourage our friend.    I stopped over to tell you that you are part of my posting today. Hope you don’t mind!Cheryl B.http://thebzhousethatlovebuilt.blogspot.com

  2. And it has cherry fabrics in it!  What a great picnic and adventure quilt.  Wooden tulips are a good idea.  Maybe I should get some and stick them in the snow bank.  It snowed again yesterday, and it is doing so right now.  Blah!  I like all your new treasures!

  3. I bet your eyes popped at the cherry fabric! Great find! I was going home from running some errands and realized there’s an antique store not very far from my house at all! All these wasted years. I can’t wait until I get the chance to slip out alone again.

  4. I’m SO GLAD to hear you were able to get out alone with your friend Kathy. The quilt is beautiful! I have noticed on your posts that you used crocheted blankets to sit outside and wondered if you had some quilts for that purpose. I just love the idea of a quilt for a picnic! This afternoon I was able to get away for almost three hours alone! It was so refreshing. I browsed JoAnn’s Fabrics for a long time (and bought more flannel for baby blankets) and then visited one of my favorite used bookstores. I found (and bought) a 70’s version of Tasha Tudor’s “A Time to Keep” for less than $5!

  5. How fun to enjoy some special time with your friend and shopping.  I love the quilt, especially the fun cherry prints.  What a great idea to use for picnics.  I come away with such good ideas from visiting my friends here on xanga.Have a great weekend.Oh, I like your pretty music, the Butterfly Waltz is playing and it is so soothing and peaceful.

  6. AWESOME quilt!!!  I have one from my grandmother that is so similar, it took me by suprise a little when I saw yours!  My oldest just walked by and said “hey, that looks like our quilt!”.  Maybe i’ll take a pic and put it on my blog πŸ™‚

  8. hi shanda…….great finds!!  it’s so fun going through antique shops, never quite knowing what you will find.  i’m glad you had a nice day with your friend.

  9. Everyone has commented about the colorful quilt, but I’m quite taken with your chicken waterer. Perhaps one needs to have chickens to have appreciation? I do like it….and the fact that you had a little time away with your grown-up friend. Moms need that so much!

  10. It reminds me of the quilts at Nan’s house, it is super happy and colorful! The chicken waterer is PERFECT for you!!!So nice that you were able to get away with a friend and go to such an inspiring place!  Hope you are having a lovely day!

  11. @AmericanJanet – Thank you!  The next time I go I’ll have to take pictures, there were so many chicken items!  I’m keeping my eyes open for a wire basket; so far they have been pricey but they had a lot of different sizes and designs.  There were old wooded egg crates, too.  The waterer was only 10 dollars!  I think because the base was missing.

  12. How fun to get away. I can just see those tulips in the garden. I like quilts so much…yours is delightful. They are a lot like flowers with all the color. I need to get out one I have that has been used for picnics and such and do a bit of mending so we can use it again. You are always an inspiration Shanda!
