grace made cookies

All by herself, she mixed up the dough for the recipe she carefully chose herself; sour cream cut out cookies.

Then, with her mixed up dough, she gathered her supplies and settled down at the table to decorate, quietly.

This was some serious fun.

She thought, she considered, she decorated.  Every single cookie cutter and piece of candy, every sprinkle and every raisin, was looked at and admired.

I learn a lot from my own children…like how to do a single task with joy, how to make pretty cookies.  How to really see and admire the little things, to enjoy the doing of the job and not just the results.  Grace is a good one for this, she doesn’t do anything hastily…it’s always slow and steady with my girl.

I’m ashamed at how many times I tell her to hurry up, when it’s really me that needs to slow down.

  1. Her cookies are beautifully creative! My youngest daughter, Abby is like your Grace. So often I had to resist the urge to hurry her along. She is so creative, though. She sings like and angel, and leads worship at her church. She sketches and paints. She loves colors and decorating. She loves putting an outfit together and always looks adorable. She paints gorgeous sets for projects that she and her husband direct at the church in N. Ireland where they are youth pastors. Yep! Our kids can teach us SO much! I think it is so interesting that we are told by God to train them up in the way THEY should go — not in the way WE would like them to go! Our Lord has already put gifts and talents in them and decided their destiny, and we are the custodians of those precious things. We must polish and encourage and use great wisdom to set them on their paths. Blessings to you and your sweet family!

  2. They DO look lovely.  I think we, as moms, often need reminded to “slow down”.  We bustle through tasks because there is yet another one to accomplish!  I love your post for this reason…I love the beauty you find in nature.  The simple things.  It blesses me!

  3. Great job Grace! I made cutout cookies yesterday too but they weren’t decorated as pretty as yours!! My daughter never liked the kitchen, said when she got married and had a home of her own “it isn’t going to have a kitchen!!” Hmmm, I guess they’re all different!! She has other talents and loves and I’ve learned that it’s OK!!!

  4. You’ve got a special baker in the house.  I love how she is putting so much time and concentrating on each cookie as if it were a piece of artwork. Thanks for the special reminder.  I find myself rushing the boys all the time, but you’re so right, I’m the one that needs to stop and enjoy whatever project they’re working on.  Is that a tablecloth in the last picture?  It is so pretty and springy.

  5. What a coincidence!  I recently copied a recipe for sour cream cut out cookies – but haven’t tried it, yet.  Also, you and I both keep our cookie cutters in a big glass jar!  Mine is sitting on the end of the kitchen bar, waiting for us to try the same recipe!Isn’t it wonderful to have a child who can do things with minimal help from us?  It means our girls are growing up, doesn’ t it?!

  6. They look yummy, Grace!  My mom makes these every year for Christmas and my sisters painstakingly decorate each one just like Grace did.  What a work of art!
