Hape Brth Day seth (Davy’s original spelling)

I made Seth’s birthday cake myself (I usually buy the birthday cakes) and  I’m pleased with how it turned out.  I have a book of cut-up cake designs and I let David and Caleb pick which one they thought I should make for Seth’s first birthday and this was the one they picked.  I baked the cake on Monday evening and then decorated it (after a trip to the grocery store) on Tuesday.  Caleb was my audience, and frosting & candy taste tester.  It was actually a very relaxing, nice project to do and felt rewarding once I was done.

The frosting recipe was from the book and it tasted SO good (I had my fair share) that I thought I would post it.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

1 stick of butter (I doubled the recipe and used 1 stick of butter and 1/2 a cup of shortening)
3 to 4 T of milk
2 teaspoons clear vanilla
1 pound powdered sugar.
Cream all together until nice and fluffy, if needed add more milk a tiny bit at a time, until the frosting is the consistency that you want it.

At 5:00 yesterday evening we had our little birthday party for Seth.  We ate pizza and then had our cake.  I hope you like the little slide show we made this morning of the pictures we (mostly my sister Amanda) took.

And, here is a crazy 4 minute video (sorry it’s so long) that Jacob took with his IPOD, I didn’t even know he was taking it.  During the “Happy Birthday” song Jacob forgot to tape Seth’s face (but Naomi sure looked precious) because he was smiling for the pictures.  I think the video is fun because it definitely shows a true and realistic behind the scenes look at what was going on.

A shorter clip of Seth enjoying his cake:

We had a light dusting of snow in the night and the outdoors looks so pretty.  Jacob, Ethan, and Grace are already bundled up and out enjoying the ice and snow.  Jacob brought the first chicken egg of the day and went back out.

I’m going to get ready for my day and then start gathering things around the house so that we can start making homemade Valentines.  I’m ready to feast my eyes on pretty pinks and reds!

What are you doing today?

  1. Great job on the cake! I enjoyed the pictures and videos. I would like to make some flamingo valentines that I saw in Family Fun, but I need to go to the craft store and buy some pink feathers and pink pipe cleaners. 🙂 We’ve been under the weather here so we’ve been staying inside all week…hopefully that changes soon! On a good note, the nausea seems to be winding down now! Yay! I’m 10 1/2 weeks. 🙂

  2. Wonderful birthday and cake! It turned out really cute, and I am sure it was fun for the boys to pick the design. That same kind of frosting has earned me a reputation as a good cake baker…and I usually just use a boxed cake. It is the good tasting frosting everyone loves. My boys like the cream cheese buttercream frosting. Loved the slide show and the videos. It was fun to hear everyone and feel like I was there. I love Weds. morning because I wake up to a clean house! We have home Bible study group on Tues. night so do our cleaning before that. We are going to have Chemistry class this morning, and the class is going to try to finish up their science project for this weekend. It is a sunny day, which we will enjoy, another rain storm is on its way.

  3. Good job with the cake…I love making my girl’s cakes.  Madelynn has informed me that she is making her cake herself this year.  We will see what she ends up making.  Happy B-day Sethie.  Love you all!

  4. I loved the videos:) What a wonderful family! I was trying to figure out which voice is yours? One day…when you feel brave…maybe you could post a video of you talking so we can put the voice with the face???? I always imagine peoples voice so different…it would be neat to hear!

  5. Shanda, bravo on the beautiful cake!!! Oh my goodness, that first slideshow…now, that is what it’s all about! Wonderful, real life, with lots of love and chatter and children and good food. Watching it made me feel back at home, and it made me smile, cry, and laugh, I enjoyed every second!!It was so precious to see Seth surrounded by all his family, with the other children gazing lovingly and admiringly at him before the birthday cake was cut. Also, the picture of that look between Seth and his dad brought tears to my eyes; already, that tender bond between father and son is forming. And the picture of you and Rich with Seth – you look as fresh and pretty as if Seth was your first child. Such great memories captured here!

  6. I love it!  So looking at the pictures of your baby made me cry.  They grow up so fast.  I remember waiting for his arrival and the first pictures you posted of that sweet little boy.  I loved the video.  I always envy you a little cause everything always seems so calm and peacful at your home.  I have three kids 2 and under and it is ALWAYS hectic here.  The video just let me know you guys are normal after all.  I love it. Love it.  Happy Birthday to your little man.

  7. What a great cake.  It looks like he liked the M & M’s, he’s so cute and a little ham for the camera.  I enjoyed seeing the video clip of your family, it’s nice to hear your voice.Take care

  8. I couldn’t view your videos for some reason. 😦 However, the cake looks wonderful! My attempt at making Andrew’s cake wasn’t so good, but I’m hoping to do better for his 2nd birthday! Have a wonderful evening!
