little trip to the library

I took the children to the local library today, my favorite place to go.

Seth fell sound asleep on the drive there and continued his nap for another 20 minutes or so, surrounded by books.

I am a huge fan of Jan Brett story books right now.  I think I checked out every single one my library had on the shelf.  Her illustrations are gorgeous and so detailed.

Grace and I looked through an American Girl magazine and we thought this idea (of turning a hardware chest into a jewelry case) was really neat.  My jewelry is currently a mixture, all thrown in one square box.  I think I need something like this for myself!

Jacob picked out a stack of military type books out of the adult section, Ethan didn’t get any books out because he is still waiting his turn for The Two Towers.  I’m almost done, E!  I know I’ve been telling you that for days, but honest, I’m almost done!

Seth woke up and Miss Grace had the couch to herself after that.  She checked out a stack of books about horses.  We found a section on WILD horses that she hadn’t noticed before…she’s really enjoying them.  There is something magical about horses running around free in nature.  She found a book that had beautiful stories and pictures in it, called Wild Horses I Have Known.

We also found an educational DVD on eggs.  How they are laid and stuff.  Appropriate, I thought, since our chickens are producing eggs for us now.

Oh, my Seth was a handful.  I just cannot believe that I AM NOW CHASING MY BABY…he runs all over the place full of mischief.

I bought him his outfit at Gymboree yesterday for 5.99.  It has an animal and the words, “Hug Me” on the front.

I just noticed that he is sitting under a book titled TOM.  Why is this making me laugh right now?  Am I tired or something?

I had Caleb with me, too, but I didn’t keep any of the pictures I took of him.  He played with the toys and yelled at Seth, who kept going over and wrecking the train track he was trying to put together.  Caleb thinks Seth should know the rules of polite society and does not have any mercy for him whatsoever.  Caleb needs to learn the rule, “Nice people do not yell so loud in the library”.

After we spent our time at the library, I took the children to the famous blue and pink Elvis diner down the road.  Caleb burned his tongue on his hot chocolate and Seth kept trying to get out of his highchair so he could sit on the table.  I had to swap highchairs for one that had a buckle that worked.  Once the food came everyone was jolly again.  We all just needed some nourishment.

My older children all went to a friend’s house this afternoon and the highlight of my day was being able to hold a flushed-cheeked-sound-asleep-warm baby and watch TV for a little while.  I love to sniff Sethie’s head and give him kisses.

  1. Awe, loved this post! Isn’t it fun to have fun with our kids?! My kids are starting to get annoyed with the baby also (Abbie 9 1/2 months). They are good natured about it, but will ask me to please take her away from what they are trying to play. Your library looks nice. I live in a town of only 1500 people so the library is very small but nice. They have storytime on Monday mornings and I need to start taking the kids again. Ahh, and yes the smell of a babies head is delicious.

  2. Library trips are great fun, I always like it when I find a treasure. Like a new author I love who has written alot of books! LOLI too love that jewelry box idea. However I think I’d use mine for little craft supplies. 🙂

  3. I loved this trip to the Library with you. Sethie looks adorable in that bright orange jumper…I would want to hug him. What a great couch to have at the library. Ours has some nice chairs in the adult section and bean bags in the kids. Grace looks so pretty and comfy and the boys look happy at their game. I was thinking last night…” I miss the library”. I haven’t been since before Christmas! I have more than I can read at the moment, but I love all the books and different categories. I also love the ability to just bring something home without the worry of it being something I want to invest in. How great you had some snuggly time at the end of your day.

  4. This is a lovely post… you all have such a happy, warm looking library!has Grace read the horse books by Marguerite Henry?? I LOVED those when I was younger, and still read them from time to time. I think there are 12 of them.

  5. The blue and pink Elvis diner – I would have loved to have been there with you! That is a great idea for jewlery!!!Seth’s outfit is so dear!  Steve and I love soft one piece clothes on babies!

  6. Ah… the library looks delightful!! A favorite place of mine and the childrens too… The diner sounds really cool too and a good wat to top off the trip! The alone time with baby sounds like exactly what a busy mother needs! Blessings!

  7. we love the library, too!  yours looks so bright and cheerful.  ours has games and things for smaller kids, but the chess game is great for the older ones.  hmmm, perhaps something to bring up to our children’s librarian.
sounds like an all around nice day.

  8. The restaurant we went to tonight did not have working belts in any of the high chairs. Lucy kept standing up, so we were eating with our arms extended trying to keep her from falling. We tried putting her on our lap, but then she was just grabbing our forks and our plates. 🙂

  9. I love your library! We love spending weekends in our public library. They have a big row of computers that the kids can play games on, a puppet theater in one corner and lots of Lego’s and other fun stuff. If they sold coffee – I could live in there myself!

  10. Your library looks so nice.  We had a great one in MA, the children’s area was huge.  I wish we could have taken it with us when we moved out here.  I’m totally thinking outloud here about the Tom book–maybe a name if the baby is a boy .  I know, I’m hoping you have a girl, but I just thought it was cute seeing Seth under the book.  He’s adorable.I’ll have to check out Jan Brett’s website.

  11. I have seen wild horses in Missouri…twice, actually. It’s supposedly some sort of legend there. There was a pack of them near a river that we camped at. It was a remote campground and they came up into the campground in the evenings if you were really quiet, but spooked easily. There was also one night when we were driving the winding roads of MO in the wee hours of morning, the full moon was out and they ran across the road, down the embankment and into the woods. It was so surreal and beautiful. I wished I’d had a picture, but the memory of what it looked like is something I will never forget. 🙂

  12. My library is my favorite place in the world too!!  We have a brand new library that was completed last summer.  It’s about 1/4 of a mile from my home…what a blessing!  I love the fact that if you go to the library catalog online you can order any book they have in the entire county and pick it up at your branch!

  13. I’m a baby sniffer, too! Love it! I miss the library! There is one in our little town, but of course, all the books are in Danish. I used to go to the kid’s section and check out books to help me learn Danish! The vocabulary was repetitive, and there were lots of pictures which was helpful. I have not had a magazine in AGES to look at! My mom tried to subscribe me to Reader’s Digest Magazine, and I did get several copies. Then I got a letter saying that they did not deliver to Denmark. Uh….. but I have three that WERE delivered! ??? SO you DO deliver. Oh well… I can read most articles on line in magazines I like. The internet is a blessing, yeah? It means I get to see your sweet self and hear about your family, too!

  14. =) This post made me smile. My daughter is 13 months and i know it’s the worst habit but i love to cuddle her and watch tv just before nap time. It’s a time to sit and be still and just hold her. Sometimes she’ll fall asleep like that and i’ll just hold her while she sleeps.  Since we quit nursing it’s the only time she falls asleep in my arms and i cherish that time.

  15. I can NOT imagine taking my four kids to the library and out to lunch by myself… how do you do it??!?!?!I did put some Jan Brett books on hold at my library just now…

  16. oh my goodness, i LOVE kids libraries. i’m sooo excited that you are reading with your kids and they love books so much. that warms my heart. i’m a huge book person. i am obsessed with them. They are something that i just treasure having so much and am constantly amazed at what i can learn about through them. I would totally love the wild horses books. My friend told me yesterday about a trip way up north in Newfoundland (Far Northern East coast of canada) and there is an island off the coast that has wild horses on it…not very deep so they swim across to the mainland every now and again…he said it was amazing.

  17. oooohhhhh, Seth is so ADORABLE as usual! It’s hard to imagine him NOT being “The Baby” of your family. Your library is awesome!okay, it is JANUARY 25…waiting to hear THE NEWS….
