some breathing space

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

~Robert Frost

(I can totally relate and claim as my own, this last stanza of Frost’s lovely poem (although I’m not walking more miles in the WOODS today, alas, I’m cleaning like a mad woman and making plans to run errands)….I’ve already done so much this morning and there is still so much to do.  I hope you enjoy this post….some breathing space….maybe you can smell the cold air and feel the snowflakes on your cheeks….and hear the blessed quiet of the country woods?)

If you had a cold, snowy day to do whatever you wanted, (and your house was already clean and you had no responsibilities)….what would you do?  What would be your idea of a perfect winter day?

Here’s my list:

wear comfy warm clothes, thick socks, and slippers

keep the fire going all day

curl up on the couch with a clean blanket, a Bible, a good book, a stack of good magazines, a good pen, and a journal

nap & pray, pray & nap

sip hot beverages, slowly

have no one else around, except my comfortable husband, and I would make him relax for a change

no overhead lights…just lamps and candles

eat simple food

Your turn!

  1. Well, I don’t have to imagine the snow and cold because we also have it here…..but I love the photos no less.  : )Since I don’t have a lot of “me” time–I’d have to say that I would be in my soft, fuzzy jammys, under a blanket (with my kitty, Spaz most likely laying on my lap) with a few good books, magazines.  Eat snack type foods all day.  Hot chocolate with marshmellows. NO TV.  No computer.  Turn both home and cell phones off.  Just silence.  I’d possibly have a journal near me as well.  Just me, myself and I.  No offense to my husband or daughter.

  2. My first thing is to wish for a fireplace. šŸ™‚ Secondly….the pen and journal, stack of magazines and books and maybe…just maybe a nice friend to watch a long, long romantic and adventurous epic with. šŸ˜‰

  3. Write, write, write! By a flickering fire (in our imaginary fireplace, but hey, while I’m dreaming I might as well dream big, right?), both on my laptop, pecking out stories, and in my journal, finally getting some letters to my daughters written. Have a pot of fragrant soup simmering on the back of the stove all day … cuddle with my girls and my husband … read, get lost in a really good book and not have to put it down just as I’m getting into it … play outside in my (imaginary) backyard, build a snowman with Joy … watch old movies and scrapbook with my sister … work on that quilt for our bed for which I don’t even have the fabric yet …Back to reality now, time to go wash some more laundry and then feed the baby!

  4. I’d definitely go for bundling up in cozy clothes and sitting in front of the fireplace! I think I’d either read or spend time sorting and labeling photographs. I’m planning to give Jesse a family album of pictures for Father’s Day next June! I’d incorporate chocolate into my day. Hot cocoa and my Christmas fudge . . . you know? good “calming the nerves” flavors!Your pictures are beautiful. How many inches of snow did you end up getting? We are expecting rain, turning to snow, on Wednesday – then snow through Christmas Eve. I’m sure it will be nothing like the Eastern Seaboard’s spectacular snow – but we will take whatever God gives us!

  5. Sit on the couch, watch it snow, watch the birds, fill the birdfeeders, read God’s Word, drink something hot and very tasty.  Talk to friends on the phone . . . and spend special time with dear husband.  Thanks for the dream ~

  6. Well, since I’m not getting a lot of sleep at night with a newborn in the house, I would love to have a nap!  I think it would be a perfect day to sit in a comfy window seat (to look at all the pretty snow) with lots of pillows and a good book and a steaming hot cup of white chocolate mocha.I love your pretty berry and snow picture!  So clean and crisp.

  7. Loved living my winter wonderland dream through your pictures šŸ™‚ Here’s it’s supposed to be summertime again with highs in the upper 60’s šŸ™‚ ok, so here’s my listbundle up and play in the snowhave snowball fightsso ice skatingmake snow ice cream go sleddingAfter all that coldness I’d come in for a hot cup of tea and sit by the fire šŸ™‚

  8. love the poem , love the pics , love this post !&sounds like a nice , ideal winter day ;mm so relaxing :)i’d want to curl up on the couch with blanket with hot tea , watchin tv or painting (something artistic)

  9. Diddo!  I would love to do a lot of the same things you listed.  I would probably do some organizing, scrap booking, crafts with Mom, plan my veggie garden for the spring, write a letter/card to someone God encourages me to,  . . .

  10. I love your list …so warm and cosy. I would do all that too, and add walking in the woods, sketching by the window, and baking something yummy. Beautiful snow pictures!!

  11. I’d want my toes by the fire, a really good book, quiet Christmas music in the background, a lovely hot cappucino, just pure quiet, a nap, and some candles, and about the time I got hungry a chef would appear with something delightful to eat šŸ˜‰ LET IT SNOW!

  12. Add in, a walk in the snow with my hubby & my camera & the whole day you described sounds EXACTLY the same as my idea of a perfect way to spend a snowy day alone.:) Loved the pictures and the entry! Blessings to you, Shanda!

  13. Heh. I mean its in the 50’s here in Fla and we’re bundled up.my blood is SO thin!! So basically I’d stay inside and drink lots of delicious hot drinks. and probably do a lot of what you have on your list. Cept I’ll have to wait another few years for a husband to hang with on cold days!

  14. Hmmm. Me and hubby cuddled on the sofa we’ll hopefully have soon, with a down blanket over us, awesome music playing, a plate of freshly baked oat bread on the coffee table we hope to have, a mug of my favorite mocha…then our kids and grandwonders all come in the front door, laughing from playing in the snow and they all pile on the sofa with hubby and I. Sheer winter bliss! Love, GAil

  15. Lovely pictures! Hmm… I would want to go sledding with my SO for sure. And probably a nice long walk in the woods behind his house. Then it would be amazing to cuddle up on the couch under a blanket, drink hot chocolate, watch the snow fall, talk about childhood memories and play Dominoes! If the snow is good, maybe I’d sneak a surprise snowball attack in there. =P

  16. Push over, Shan! …Save some room on that couch for me! :o) That’s exactly what I would do, too! The pictures are beautiful! If I don’t get a chance to talk to you again, I hope you and your family have a very blessed Christmas! lots of love!

  17. ditto kiddo. That would pretty much be my list, except that now that my kids are grown I would include them in the day, just sitting and sipping together. Add some music of soft inspirational or baroque in sound and a pinch of chocolate sometime and we would pretty much make that winter day one to treasure. Thank you for the pictures and the moment of calm in the midst of the day. Merry Christmas precious one.

  18. Honestly, my list would be the same as yours, with the addition of baking cookies and cooking soup. Last night I finished Letters of A Homestead Woman! It was so awesome, I had to read most of the last chapter aloud to Terry! I will now include that book among the ones I consider to be my good “go to” friends. I re-read (and re-read) my favorite books, and that one is a winner. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for sharing it with me Shanda!!!

  19. That would be my list! Thank you for the gorgeous visual vacation! People don’t seem to realize that it’s more kind to take the children out and leave us at home than come here to babysit! LOL!

  20. The photographs of the woods look like the woods just behind my house – but fortunately (or unfortunately) for us who live just on/below the snowline here in CA, they looked like that about three weeks ago and now all the snow is gone! Your perfect day sounds much like mine would…but I would probably nap less and would love to have an hour to chat with each of my two almost adult children as I don’t get to do this as much now I work full time and they are at college.

  21. I sat –closed my eyes- allowing my mind to roam back to you & Ricks age and behold almost felt the Crisp Frosty Air on my cheeks, As I sit here alone tonight while Inez is now asleep in bed. What and how you described the day sounds Wonderful–I forgot–Did you mention a Fire in the Fireplace?

  22. Your day sounds pretty perfect to me as is.  I can’t think of anything I’d really like to change about it.  Loved the pictures of the snow… its been in the 70’s here with the talk of storms and possible (probable) tornadoes and straight line winds tomorrow and Thursday early morning.  It was fun to dream  of the snow on your blog today.
