of a chicken, and an egg

This is Miss Margaret, our one and only egg layer (so far).

At about 8 this morning (the time of day she laid her first 2 eggs), we all put our jackets on, over our pj’s, and tromped on down to see the show.

She gets in her nesting box and sits and sits and turns and makes noises.  She arranges the strands of straw around her, just so.

Her sisters wait outside (we can see them out the window) and she’s all alone (except for some gawking humans) in the hen house.

Come on Margaret, hurry up!  She doesn’t seem to mind us hanging about.

I stand and wait and sip my coffee.  I look around at my very own chicken coop and make my beautifying plans; curtains, pretty “wall” paper for the backs of the nesting boxes.  I feel happy and content.  The straw and wood shavings smell so good.

I’ve been wanting chickens for years.  Now I have them, and the egg laying has begun.

My Caleb calls himself a “farmer boy”.

Finally, the prize.  One nice fresh morning egg.  A beautiful brown color.

She stays with it, fidgeting and arranging,  for another 5 minutes or so and then hops out of her box, ready to go play outside with the others.

Well done!  And thank you!

Grace cups the egg in her hands, it’s still warm.  And away we go, to fry it up for breakfast.

But first, she compares it to a regular ol’ store egg;

See?  It’s a bit smaller, but we’ve read in our chicken book that the first eggs are that way.

What a treat, a fresh as fresh can be egg, fried in real butter, in a cast iron skillet.

It pops and sizzles and smells sooooooo good.

Perfectly cooked, and half eaten.  Very tasty.  Ethan claimed this particular one for himself *yesterday* by saying, “I get Margaret’s next one!!!” in a sing-song voice.

But, he graciously shares, and I get finish it up, yum!

We can’t wait until tomorrow, for the next one.

And soon, our other 12 girls will be laying eggs for us, too.

  1. Oh, the brown eggs are the best. The yolks are so golden, yellow.  You just wait…you will soon have a dozen eggs a day;).  Better check out recipes now…Hee HEe.  I’m sure the fried eggs will get old.  (but right now even I could eat one)

  2. Yum! Everyone will be wanting eggs today. I wonder if you will be selling them by the side of the road once all your ladies get busy. Thanks for sharing this wonderful time. You will have plenty of chicken manure for your garden too! Have a happy day!

  3. We have to buy our yard eggs and raw milk from someone who picks them up and delivers to a drop-off point every two weeks. They are worth every cent. Our backyard is too small for chickens, but my dream is to have chickens too. I guess I’ll have to vicariously enjoy yours…and I have already! I can’t wait to see how you dress up the hen house. šŸ™‚

  4. Isn’t that whole egg laying process just a fab idea of God’s?  I mean, really, it took a genius way bigger than any ordinary human to create such a plan.  How can you NOT believe in a GOD?  And that’s just an egg of a chicken… don’t even get me started on the “creating people plan.”   Love the way you delight in the simple things.  Your children will never forget.

  5. Now Shanda, after laying an egg, wouldn’t you want to go outside and play too? And just think, she has to do that every day of the month! Yikes! Scary to think about!!!! LOL!!!

  6. I love fresh eggs. My dad had chickens last year – until his dog and the neighbor’s cat took them out. My kids LOVED getting the eggs. My dad’s hens didn’t always use their laying boxes, so it was like an Easter egg hunt everyday. I’ve been wanting to get some, but have been hesitant because of the risk of drawing bears into the yard.

  7. I soooo want chickens! It will probably be years before I get them too! I sent you a package today. šŸ™‚ I don’t know whatever happened with the candle…:( I didn’t get mine either and my calls have not been returned. But I made you something neat! It should get there this week.

  8. Yeah, I’m so excited that your chickens starting laying eggs!!! If you ever want to sell any, let me know.  James enjoys eggs for breakfast every morning.

  9. Shanda–>will you be able to keep up with all the eggs when they are laying at their “finest hour” LOL I must sound like a dope but I have no clue how many eggs hickens lay–don’t they lay a TON?? Just curious what you will do with the extras?

  10. haha! I read this story to my almost 3 year old and he loved it! He listened so intently. :o) I grew up having chickens, and milking goats…. and he gets to see chickens at Grandma’s house. Someday we are going to have chickens too. I say…in about 3 years, when he is old enough to help me care for them! lol

  11. Now I’m hungry for a fried-in-butter-egg.  Although mine won’t be that fresh.  I remember gathering lots of eggs when I was small, and some hens who weren’t so pleased when we removed the egg from underneath them.
