Seth 8 months old

Thank you for all your sweet comments, congratulating us on our new baby!  Yes, he (or she) was conceived in Colorado, hence the title of the post, “my colorado baby”…..Rich and I were not planning on another child quite so soon, but now that it has happened we both agree that it just feels right.  We’re happy.  I did a pregnancy test here at home on Thursday and it was positive…I haven’t been to the doctor’s yet.  The children are happy but it took them about ten minutes to realized that “mommy is going to have a baby” means “mommy is pregnant NOW”…but, after they figured that out, Ethan started cheering and saying, “now we have to figure out what to name it!” and Jacob just sat on the kitchen counter looking at my stomach and saying, “wow.”  Grace asks me questions about when the baby will be born and how old Seth will be and things like that.  David was surprised and laughed said, “oh NO!” like any 7-year old boy would do if he already had a baby brother in the house, and Caleb just kept playing with his Thomas trains.

I am feeling great.  I have started walking every morning.  I’ve walked 6 days already.  We have a treadmill down in the basement, with a TV, so I watch the Martha Stewart show or something while I walk.  I try to walk at least 3 miles.  Today I walked 4.  (Seth was sleeping.  If he’s awake I put him in his playpen, in the room with me) I want to exercise because I am heavier now that I’ve ever been, starting out in a pregnancy, and I want to take care of myself.  Physically, I feel great.  Emotionally, I also feel great.  I know life is and will be hard at times, but right now I have lots of energy and I’m in a happy place (don’t you love happy places?).

I still plan on continuing to nurse Seth (I’m nursing him as I type, and he’s humming).  I figure that any way I can burn extra calories while sitting down in a comfortable position is a good thing.  And, he still has absolutely no teeth.

Yes, most of us are hoping for a girl, but of course we will also be happy with another baby boy.

For now, Seth is my precious baby in arms, and I continue to delight in him so very much.

On October 2, he turned 8 months old, so I took these pictures to mark the day.

Rich fixed his tuft of hair with a tiny bit of hair gel for him the other day.  (He flattened it to his head.)

I made his bib, by the way.  I found a pattern this summer and made 3 of them with my sewing machine.  It was fun.  I made this red one out of one of Rich’s old shirts.

Seth crawls fast like a pro now, and pulls himself up anywhere.  He can now stand and watch his brother take a bath and get splashed.  He sleeps all night long and eats all kinds of food.  I mash up meals for him in my baby food grinder (one of those white plastic ones with the handle that you crank).  He loves spaghetti and beef stew.  He smiles a lot, and he has a habit of crinkling his eyes shut and then opening them, as he smiles…it’s like he’s winking at us, only he’s shutting both eyes instead of one.

He also likes to wrinkle his nose and sniff in and out, for fun.

He laughs really hard when David gets down on the floor and they crawl together, side by side.  It’s soooo cute!

I still love to take the time once in a while, to hold and snuggle him as he takes a catnap.

There is a lot going on in my life,

(like, for instance we lost our keys in Costco on Saturday and never did find them…..Rich had to get a ride back home from our brother in law to get the spare set *a 20 minute trip to Costco took 2 hours*.   Also, David has an ear infection but stayed home from school yesterday w/pink eye and missed his school pictures.  Two guys came today to measure my window for new curtains, and they had to walk over chickens and toys to get the front door. Yesterday a guy came to repair a scratch in my new bookcase, and he had to step over a dead mouse on his way to the door.  And then let me know about it (like it was news)when he came in!  I have a loving cat, and I’m used to his “gifts”.  Also, the chicken coop comes tomorrow……. etc……etc……)

and I’m thankful to God for getting me through each and every day!

I’m going to do a blog about my life as a chicken person very soon!  I can’t wait to show you my new little barn when it comes.  I’ll have to have Grace help me with that blog entry, she’s my assistant chicken person.

Oh, and I’m working on a new pantry, too!  I can’t wait to post pictures of the shelves of canned goods, with more labels!

Stay tuned!

  1. Congratulations on the new little one!!  What a sweet baby boy this one is.  I am sure it will be busy, but thankfully God does always help us.  I always enjoy your real life stories…they help encourage me to know I am not the only mother in the world who is going through the daily things.  Can’t wait to see how your pregnancy progresses.

  2. I’m excited for this new little addition that God has formed in your womb!! πŸ™‚ Seth is so precious ~ and the bib you made looks great. Very resourceful, Shanda! I have a large stack of my husbands old shirts (ones that are too big for him) that I plan on turning into a quilt. We’ll see how that goes. Can’t wait to see pictures of your barn and pantry.

  3. So happy for you all. And, as you know, Seth is a cutie patootie. I just love these pictures of him. He has the sort of face that just makes me smile. I like his tuft of hair, and his incredibly sweet smile! I am glad he is the kind of baby that is eating and sleeping well for you! Yay, for being in a happy place with energy. As moms we can rejoice in that and enjoy it! I nursed my firstborn Daniel for awhile while pregnant with my second. Worked out well, then we stopped when he was 14 months old. They were 21 months apart…so I know you will have two babies then…one big and one small…but lots of loving arms in your house! My Nicky missed school pictures when very young. We told him he had make-up picture day. So later he asked, “when is lipstick day?” one of those funny, memorable moments. Thanks for sharing everyone’s reaction. Love, Jenny

  4. I’m not feeling so happy today…it was nice to read your post. I wondered what a colorado baby was bu now that you’ve mentoned it in your post I’m like duh…..why didn’t I guess that:):)I have 2 children that are 17 months apart and 2 that are 15 months apart…so I can relate:) Those were my 2 closest sets. They were like little twins for a while:)Can’t wait to see the chicken barn!!

  5. I’m more excited about your new pantry (jealous, here!) than your chicken house, but will enjoy seeing all pictures you have to offer us!Do you have the temp set cold when you use the treadmill? I’ve thought about getting one, but was afraid it would be too hot in the house to walk for miles!I told Jesse last night that I thought Seth’s b-day was Feb. 4th. I was close. I wish I could remember stuff about our *own* family, as well as I remember things about everyone else’s life!

  6. @cherylyn_p – There is a built in fan in the treadmill which helps a lot, and we have an overhead ceiling exhaust fan in the room (I can’t tell when it’s on, though)…I also leave the door open to the room, and open a window in the boys’ room.  As you can tell, I got too hot once and was determined to find some air flow!  LOL

  7. Sweet, sweet little boy! You do have so many wonderful things to look forward to. No time not to be in that “happy place”. We pray it all goes well for you. What a sweet little kitty too making sure you are cared for and well taken care of! Everyone in your home watches over you!

  8. You have a way of making the talk of pink eye, pregnancy, dead animals and nursing babies all in the same home -at the same time- seem so casual. *LOL*I can’t WAIT to see the barn!!! πŸ™‚ I love barns. I want to build a potting shed in my back yard…..well, to be honest, *I* don’t want to build it….*I WANT* it built…..did you look at Mary Jane’s stuff for inspirtation chicken coops? Are you going to wall paper the chicken coops like she did?? LOL. That’s a hoot!!! Er…a cockadoodle-do! :)So, are you going back to 5 letter Bible names for this baby? We Xangan’s have helped on the last 2…..don’t leave us out on this one!!! It’s a tradition!!  Thanks for the comment you left me. Made me smile. Big-time. Love ya tooo…..Cass

  9. So cute.  Isn’t it amazing how our “normal” everyday life seems so traumatic to others….(ie the mouse).  Guess we sort of get used to just about anything when we have little ones.So excited about the pregnancy.  I think I started reading your posts when you first got pregnant with Seth. I am anxious to journey through this one with you and your blog too:).

  10. Hi Shanda. Boy you’ve been busy blogging. I love catching up with your adorable family. Pictures of Seth keep getting cuter and cuter. And what beautiful pictures of your whole family!

  11. What wonderful news! Another pair of lips so sing His praise! You and Rich do such “nice work” that of course, you should have another baby! Boy or girl, it will be a loved and cherished part of your family. I am glad you are feeling well. I enjoyed the pictures and descriptions of little Seth so much. He is two months older than my little grandson, so when I read your posts and see Seth, I can kind of compare and imagine what my little Lucas will be up to soon. He is a cutie, my little guy! I sure would like to experience him in some other way than just pictures, and the phone, but that is the way it is. As we say in Danish, SΓ₯dan er det bare. Blessings to you and your dear family.

  12. oh, Shanda! He is so precious! I love that little smile…he looks like such a friendly little guy! I cannot believe he doesn’t have any teeth! or maybe, I cannot believe that mine does have teeth, would be better put! my little Brent has had teeth since 4 1/2 months! nursing is hmmm…interesting to say the least! lol! I’m so glad that you are feeling well, and wow! what a trooper you are to be walking that much! amazing! you are an inspiration…hope you have a beautiful day, friend!Rachel

  13. my little guy will be 8 mos on saturday, and I already find myself wondering about another baby!  Congrats to you!  I nursed through my pregnancy with my second and it was never any problem.  In fact, I had a very fast and easy labor with that baby–I contribute it to the fact that I had contractions while nursing for the last 6 weeks or so! My uterus was nice and ready!

  14. congratulations! how exciting to have another lil face to your family.  isn’t it so fun to share the joy with your children and see/hear their excitiment!  Hope you feel well and are blessed with an extra measure of energy – jan

  15. Good morning Shanda, I can see that you are excited and happy and in love with your baby-in-arms and your belly-baby. I really hope you may skip the period of falling asleep where ever you are and feeling low. There is lot action to keep you going. Best health wishes to your sick boy.Fine day to you all + chickensGodeliva

  16. Hey,I stumbled accross this blog randomly, but i would like to tell you that this blog is very very beautiful. Especially this series of photos on Seth, the photos were simply breathtaking.. u know, the contrast, sharpness and all. It feels like a professional photoshoot. The other photos on the nature is the same. My country is tropical and only has summer so I dont see this at all save for photos and videos.Which speaking of, which camera are you using to shoot this? The photos looks like it’s taken from a dSLR(with a good lens) :)My favorite photos are the last two with Seth posing with the pumpkin. It’s really nice – i suggest you enter them into any local photography contest πŸ™‚
