Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.  ~John Ruskin

We woke up to some light, but icy snow.  It’s melting away already, but we had a brief window of time to sled ride before it was too late.  Rich decided to work for a little while from home, and David’s school was delayed, so it felt like a holiday.  After a breakfast of home made biscuits, bacon, and fried eggs, out we went, leaving Rich inside working (but enjoying his homecooked breakfast)…….

Caleb’s squeals and laughter were a joy to hear.  Oh, he had SO much fun!  He’s a good snow-boy.

It’s so nice to live on a hill!

And all that climbing back up…..such good exercise for little legs.

And here are Jacob and David.

Jacob is sick today, but still could not resist coming outside.  He’s got an upset stomach and a headache.  That’s all I have to say about that.  You can imagine the rest.

Davy-do never did make it to school.  I waved his bus away….he can stay home today.

Ethan was Caleb’s special protector.  One time the sled (with him on it) ended up in shrubs.  I could hear Caleb all the way from the house, “OHHHH!  NOW WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO????????”, so dramatically.

We came inside just in time to kiss Rich good~bye…..it was such a treat to have him home for the morning.

Ethan took the pictures for me.

Always so safe and happy in his arms……

Okay.  Now I have to clean up the kitchen (and see if there are any leftover biscuits).  David is at the table, stamping pictures on white paper with my rubber stamp collection.  He is very industrious and has already delivered to me several masterpieces, all with MOM carefully printed on in his best handwriting.  Jacob, Ethan, Caleb, and Grace are all snuggled up in the livingroom watching one of my most favorite movies~ Little Women~ I’ll be joining them after I clean up.  We’ll do schoolwork later!

I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Love, Shanda

  1. My kids are playing in packing peanuts–my friend sent a gift for Sam’s birthday, and the peanuts are part of the gift…I’m being nice and letting them play (for a little while) before cleaning up.  🙂

  2. When winter comes I so love to watch that movie!  It’s one I could watch all the time though–like Miss Potter, Ann movies, Pride & Prejudice, hmmmm reoccuring theme-they are all back in those good old days kind of movies!  They give you a nastalgic, warm, and cozy feeling.  I love the pictures of the kids and your description of a great morning.  Love you, Lish

  3. Aww, what a wonderful morning!! That looks like a GREAT sledding hill…. what fun! I can just hear the laughter and joyful shouts. The giggles and squeals of my littler brother are my favorite noise 🙂
I really like the quote, too. Winter has always been my least favorite season, and I continually struggle with the winter blues. I am trying to see the chills of winter with a more positive attitude, though, and I think that I will write that quote out and put it up somewhere where I can see it often.

  4. I saw the weather report and wondered if you would be getting some of the white stuff!I think “Little Women” is a perfect movie to watch this time of year. Can’t tell you how many times my girls have watched it this month. I may watch it with them later on!

  5. I loved this post, Shanda!  Yummy homemade breakfast, sledding, Daddy staying home for the morning, Davy getting to stay home from school, watching “Little Women”, doing schoolwork “later”.  Loved it all!  I think of you often throughout the day, and I say a prayer for you and wee, baby Seth.  Love ya!

  6. A wonderful joyful morning. Such a great mixture of cozy…breakfast, daddy, and movie, with active sledding outside! I love the first picture esp. because of Caleb’s huge smile. I quickly picked out jacket colors so I could see who was doing what. Great to see the big brother’s sledding and taking care of brother! It is cold here for us…a really cold rain that will have the snow level down into the foothills…unusual for us here in So.CA.

  7. Fun, fun, fun in your winter wonderland! The kids look so happy and bright in their winter clothes against the snow. The hardest part must’ve been letting your Honey leave for work! At least he spent the morning at home! love, Gail

  8. I have finally had a little chance here to catch up on your posts – I love your Christmas tree – oh the pic in the dark is delightfully cozy! I am debating whether I should bring my boys by to view the snow and sledding – as it will make them wish for what they do not have all the more on this cold wet day that lacks any snow to play in 🙂 lovely pics of your children enjoying the snow though! I have great memories of sledding when I was younger in the mountains in CA. – we would go up every winter several times and ski/snowboard and get our sledding in too!blessings on your day there – and on your children and on that baby coming so soon now!lys

  9. Little Women is also one of my favorite movies.  I watch it every year around Christmas time.  So glad you had a lovely morning.  Also, so glad you chose to share it with us. 🙂  -Maria

  10. Good Morning Shanda!!!! I’m enjoying your pictures! Hey…I’ll send you guys some snow….straight from CANADA!!!! LOL!!! Your children look like they are having so much fun!! I was reading one of your posts about Grace coming down in her flannel nightgown with her Bible and reading Genesis…..my mind thought was “Little House on the Prairies!!” Thats what that reminded me of! But she is doing by your example…..you are a good mom. And about your 2 sons on the recliner…I’ve seen my Darcy (7 yrs old) do the same thing with his friends at school. Walking to the school with their arms on each others shoulders….precious.
AND….I love the quote. I agree with it whole heartedly. Yesterday I went to the drugstore and it was snowing hard a bit windy. But I thought it was beautiful. One woman came out of a store putting on her toque she kind of looked at me and looked at the snow and said (don’t mind the language)…”This sucks” I didn’t even look at her or acknowledge her. Because I did not agree with her diagnosis of the weather. I only kept walking and was thankful and didn’t let her negativity get to me.
Have a wonderful day and get some rest woman!!!!

  11. I have to enjoy snow (that I love so much) by pictures like yours. It’s a summer day down here and the air cond. is running. But it’s sure to get colder again by the weekend. You have such a nice hill to go sledding on.

  12. Shanda it looks like they are going to slide right into the pond!!! I would be so nervous or is the photo not showing how much space there is between where the hill ends and where the pond begins?
I bet you had a much much better day because you were able to have Rich home a little more than usual!
Gee does have such a nice smile in that photo!
