life with Davy-do

I made the boys superhero capes yesterday.

We were upstairs in the office and all was going along so nicely.  I finished sewing up David’s, tied it on him, and then started on Caleb’s.  After a few minutes of jumping around in his new cape, David innocently informed me, while looking out the window,

“Wearing this cape makes me want to jump off the roof!”

To which I replied, quickly and loudly, “David!  Don’t you even THINK that again!  If you say anything about that again I’ll . . .I’ll. . . .BURN your cape!”

We were both looking at each other with faces that looked like this:

I really don’t think he’ll try it.  But I sure was worried there for a second.  I had no idea he would be so inspired.

David took his cape to school today for show and tell, he got to do that because it starts with a “C”, the requirement for this month.  I sure wish I could’ve seen him showing and telling.  Hopefully he didn’t tell about the roof story.

Jumping off the porch steps is permissible.

Here’s an updated close up of his black eye.  He reminds me of a little boy that Norman Rockwell would paint.

What a boy!

EDIT*******  Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all the heartfelt comments you all left yesterday on my blog.  Truly, I was encouraged and touched.  What more can I say?  “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love”.  xoxo, ~Shanda

  1. Maybe he is more logical than you think.  Maybe he is thinking I already have a black eye so what could happen I get a blacker black eye?  I am with Davie if their is a good time to do it it is when you already have a bruise.  lol too cute

  2. Oh I have one of those! It definitely sounds like something that could have come out of Ainsley’s mouth. They sure do keep us on our toes, don’t they? Ainsley had to bring something that started with H for her show and tell today.

  3. The superhero cape reminds me of my little niece. She had just watched Mary Poppins. Her daddy was inside and saw something fly by the window. When he went outside to see what it was to his surprise there was a crumpled black umbrella with a little girl crying with a broken nose. For some reason Afton just couldn’t fly or should I say float like Mary Poppins. She’s all mended and back to being her mischevious self.

  4. Ha!!  My sister once put on all of her snow clothes and thought that she could jump out of her second-story window.  I, being the older and wiser sibbling, talked her out of it.  Maybe you could work something out with Davy’s dr.- you know, a “buy in bulk” price like at Costco or something.  I have the feeling he will be a frequent flyer in the ER and dr’s office.  What a boy!  No fear!

  5. Oh my. Davy-Do reminds me of my Gabe. Gabe went through several “cape” phases…..he loved The Story Keepers series when he was little- so we went through the “roman soldier” phase which required a cape. Then- we of course, did the superhero phases which required a cape. Then- he loved cowboys…..and so we had the Lone Ranger and Zorro phase….both requiring another cape!!! 🙂
I thought it was finally over…then he went through his “army boy” phase and that required a “Parachute”…..and the closest thing he had was tieing a black garbage bag around his neck and jumping from the front porch bannister…..so techincally- it was just another cape!!! (LOL)
Those were the days!! I’m soaking in everybit of Jakey’s boyhood- because I have come to realize those days go by way tooooo fast..you turn around from picking up a big pile of legos and tinkertoys- and he’s standing here grown asking me if he can drive us to church.

  6. Your David is definately a Norman Rockwell boy!  I will be praying that he would never, ever go up onto the roof to jump off! We Moms can inspire our kids in ways we wouldn’t have dreamed of, huh? love, Gail

  7. This is adorable indeed ~ 🙂 yes, Norman Rockwell. ~I’ve one that jumped off the roof with a cape … I was not so blessed to hear him vocalize his desires first ! lol. God protects. .. good for you hearing and jumping on it right away! 🙂 he’s a sweetie – I see that spunk in him and I happen to really like such kiddos ~ one day he might try other ways of “flying” – I was such a child that had black eyes and wore capes… my mother was so dear to have so much faith and patience… as I grew older and bungee jumped and sky dived and other such things, I would at first be leery in telling her – but then I would, and she would smile and say, “just so your heart is right and ready to meet God, that’s what I care about most…” Oh the Grace God gives to mothers.Blessings ~ and thanks for your sweet comments.

  8. Good Morning…..Boys…they have such courage! My son Leonard when he was about 9 or 10 thought he could jump from tree to tree…..like a monkey…..he found out he couldn’t. Luckily he wasn’t too far up the tree. He slid down the tree he jumped too. Thank God he didn’t get hurt. Just a few scratches.
I had a good laugh about you and Davids looks….LOL! I’m still laughing.
Thank you for sharing from your heart about your pregnancy and motherhood. You could write a devotional book for mothers. Love the pictures as always.
    Take care.

  9. Wow, what a little “super man!”  He’ll never forget his first black eye, or that his big brother gave it to him, right?  I am laughing that of everyone, it was Ethan, ETHAN that did it!  Not my sweetie! :  )
    ~ you know who!
