baby boy names

So, Rich and I are having a hard time coming up with a name for our fifth son, due in February.  We have plenty of time to decide, but he and I both are looking for some input on the list we have come up with so far.

Our new boy will probably look something like this:

The names we already have used are:

Jacob Richard
Caleb James
Ethan Gregory
David Lloyd

And, here is our short list of possible names for the next one.  They are all Biblical names, by the way.  Let me know what you think.  We stayed up talking about it last night and Rich made me laugh when he said he was about ready to offer a 100 dollar reward to the person who could name him.

Asher  “happy”.

Elias  “the Lord is God”.

James  “one who supplants, replaces”

Peter  “a rock”

  1. Peter has always been on my list, I just love it.  But then i saw Asher and I think that is really adorable – I love baby names, Micah, Samuel and Josiah I’ve always liked too.  (Isaiah won out in our family so I’d have to throw that one in there too)

  2. My vote is for Peter…I would call him Pete or Petey. What about Peter Warren or Peter Albert or Peter Allen?  (family middle names)
I like James also (but you already used that one as a middle name).
Asher is different (but what would be his nickname?).
Elias also good – but doesn’t seem to fit with the other names.

  3. I like Asher and Peter and think they both sound great with the boys names you already have.  No matter what you decide there is one thing for certain…he will be another handsome little guy!

  4. Your boys are very handsome so I am sure this new little boy is going to be too. Grace is also very beautiful. I like Peter and James they flow good with the other names, but I do like the meaning of Asher. Good luck deciding on one. Have a wonderful day.

  5. Well…since I have an Asher…Asher has my vote!!!  My son is Asher Gabriel and it suits him to a t.  He lives up to his name and is always smiling and happy.  When he was around 18 months with the best belly laugh I’d ever heard, a relative said, ‘Hmm… Asher Gabriel.  He really IS a happy angel.’  I love that.
In choosing my names, I’ve always done the Christmas Card test.  What sounds like it flows when I write it out at the end of a Christmas card.
A great book that was different than all the rest for baby names was “Beyond Jennifer and Jason.”  It’s not in dictionary form but rather written categorically.  So when my fourth child was born and I knew that a one syllable name would sound best with the rest, I used that book as a reference.
I also like Micah, someone mentioned above.

  6. I love the topic of baby names.  I think that’s why I still have my baby name books on the bookshelf in the living room.  I remember you saying you wanted a five letter name in keeping with the other kids.  I was going to suggest Joseph because it means “God will increase” which I love…but it’s not five letters.  So…it might be great for a middle name.  Micah means “Who is like God”.  Hmm.  Micah Joseph?  Asher Joseph?  Asher Joseph would be cute too if you like nicknames:  AJ.

  7. Steve and I talked about Asher when I was Pregnant witgh Etienne so I like it!  I cannot get the feel of it flowing with the other boy names that you have already.  Peter is good and strong, I like every Peter I have ever met! LOL!  They always seem to be mature and Godly.  James is Steve’s middle name and my brother-in-law’s first name so it is already a comfortable name to say and hear and it does flow with the other names of your boys.
But my vote is with Elias!!!  Super cool, strong name and won;t be on the top five most popular names in America this year!
I am itching to get your pictures up, I miss you, steve is nagging me about Ireland, so our trip will be my reward!

  8. My brother is named James Moses and the Moses part is because he was adopted and his birth mom made the choice to terminate her rights and so my parents chose Moses as his middle name because of Moses being given up by his mom out of love because it was in the best interest of her child…
My other brothers are named Micah Thomas and Cody Thomas.
I love the name Isaac David (my one and only son!! so of course it is my favorite!)

  9. Hi! I am new to your blog (I found it about a week ago through Resolved2Worship) and love it! Congrats on your new little one to be!
Out of the list you gave, I like Asher…other names I like: Max, Blaise, Brandon, Clinton, Maddox and Caedman. I know they are not Biblical names, but those are some of my favorites. Hope this helps!
Thank you for being such an inspiration!

  10. I like Asher.  I like the meaning too.  I’m big on meanings.  I think that we speak prophetically over our children when we name them (I know that is controversial, but I’m just being honest!).  I would love to name a child “happy”!!!

  11. I am not good with boy names. Guess that’s why God gave me girls. But I do love names. You should have told everyone that it had to have 5 letters, too. :)I love Asher and Elias. James and Peter are ok, but not my favorites. But of course, I’m one for the not so common names.

  12. I like Peter…that was the name I thought of when you said Biblical five letters.  Asher is a neat name too.  We do know he will be another handsome guy!

  13. Asher was on our list! But we are very big on nicknames and could not decide on one. So I love that name! I also love James as I like classic names quite a bit. Plus it is my hubby’s name, although he is always referred to as Jim or Jimmy.
Here are a few others that we liked that would fit your requirements ;).
    Judah – the praised one
Jacob – to follow, to succeed, the supplanter (I adore the nick name Jake or Jakey for a little boy. This was high on our list for quite some time.)
    Titus – honorable
I am sure you will find the perfect name for your new blessing!

  14. Oh boy, what a decision!! Well, let’s see…
James is already a middle name.Asher is dfifferent, but I really like it.. I also like Elias, which at frist was my favorite, but then I moved toward Peter…
Peter and Elias get my vote!
What about Jonathan? For some reason that name popped out to me when I was looking at the smiling faces of your handsome sons
If I have a boy someday, Isaac will be either a first or last name… probably Isaac John or something (Josh is my dad’s name, and Isaac means LAUGHTER!! And I LOVE to laugh )

  15. When our baby boy was born 7 weeks ago, we debated between Axel and Asher for a middle name.   We chose Axel because of the meaning, Father of Peace, -he was a such a peaceful little baby to carry in utero. We also debated on James, Jamison and Jamon.  (We chose Jamon)
All that to say my top 2 picks would be James and Ashur, but not neccessarily together. We also have friends with an Elias, but he is called Eli. (which is really strong and manly sounding) 😉
I enjoy the beautiful fall pictures, the dog and the boys and everything that makes me smile and feel as though I’ve escaped a little of the craziness here. Thanks. 🙂

  16. I don’t think you need to wonder much what he will look like, seeing how all the other boys look almost the same!  I always like the sound of names beginning with J, but I think I favor Asher…Maybe Asher Joel or Joel Asher or Asher James.  Can you tell I sort of like Joel?
Now, my husband was Levi, a good old solid name and he grew up to be a WONDERFUL man!  However, he was always “Junior” growing up, and then went by Lee, so Levi was used only formally and on important papers.

  17. I like Peter.  Actually, I was going to suggest it to you earlier- one of the things that didn’t make it from my mind and into your letter.  I think Peter sounds good with your other boys’ names and with your last name.  Whichever name you choose will be just right!

  18. What about Josiah I know it was mentioned already but Josiah moved to correct the wrongs around him 2 Kings 22:19because thine heart was tender and thou hast humbled thyself before  the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place and against the inhabitants thereof that they should become a desolation and a curse and hast rent thy clothes and wept before me, I also have heard thee saith the Lord.     When Josiah realized how corrupt his nation had become he tore his clothes and wept before God.  then God had mercy on him. Josiah used the customs of his day to show his repentance, when we repent today we are unlikley to tear our clothes but weeping, fasting, making apologies(if our sin involved other people)demonstrates our sincereity when we repent.  We need more Josiahs in this world.   I know we have some but we could always use more men like him.  Thank you for doing your part in raising Godly men.   deb

  19. well – we just had our first boy in July and he is Asher Daniel!  i love his name.  and love that Asher means blessed/happy in the Hebrew.  It was the meaning of the name that led us to choose that name..  !  🙂  Whatever you decide will fit your baby perfectly.

  20. I think Peter or James goes with the other children’s names, but I understand not wanting to use James again. And I’m not sure why, but I can see a little Eli running around too. I’m personally not crazy about Asher (and I have seen several little Ashers too, it’s just not quite my cuppa.)

  21. I love Asher. If we were to have anymore little boys, I would have to steal that name. I love love love it. We have an Isaac and I just love that name also (bible, 5 letters) It means laughter, and he definitly lives up to it. Meanings to names are so special. If they weren’t God wouldn’t have renamed so many people in the bible. Have fun naming your sweet sweet boy.

  22. I LOVE all those names. My little guy is named Gideon Stone. I just love his name and have never regreted it. His name mean might warrior. Hubby reminds him he is in the army of God just like Gideon of the Bible…..We don’t shorten it at all just call him Gideon. I do like all the names you picked too though.

  23. A few people said Micah……. I know it wasn’t on your list but I like it.If you want to stick with your list… Elias gets my vote… I’m so excited for you and your family.Blessings.

  24. Hmmm, I like putting Peter Elias together as a name.  Plus you already have an E name and a J name with the other boys.  That way when you are yelling at them, you can run down the list easily… LOL  Jacob, Caleb, Ethan, David, Peter!!!  Since I don’t know your last name, it’s kinda hard to tell if it would flow easy with that though.   HAHAHA  Good luck!! Suz
