Western-Style Beef 'n' Beans

Not long ago, one of my friends asked me for this recipe.  I thought I would post it here, in case anyone else would like to try it.  When I make it for people, I always get asked for the recipe, which I clipped from a Taste of Home magazine years ago.  (1999!!)

3 pounds ground beef
2 medium onions, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
2/3 cup boiling water
2 cans (28 oz each) baked beans with molasses
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup prepared mustard
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled

In a dutch oven over medium heat, cook beef, onions and celery until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain.  Dissolve bouillon in water; stir into beef mixture.  Add the beans, ketchup, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper; mix well.  Cover and bake at 375 for 60-70 minutes or until bubbly; stir.  Top with bacon.

Yield:  12 servings

Like everything else, this will taste MUCH better, if served from a beautiful fiesta bowl.

  1. Thank you so much for posting it, my friend.  I am giving it to my MIL to make on Monday for our annual Labor Day cookout.  I raved to her about how much I loved it, and she insisted on making it, since I’m baking the cake (for Matt’s birthday) and making deviled eggs already.  You’re a dear.  Love you!

  2. Thanks for the recipe!  My children love anything with beans!  This was very good and saved me from trying to decide what to have for supper, I tweeked it a little since I didn’t have everything  – first off cutting it in half since it was only the children and i, no baked beans on hand so added a can of mexican pinto beans + brown sugar to get some sweetness,  then forgetting and not halving the sauce, so adding a can of northern beans to compensate for my lack of more browned meat – definately try it again after i make a grocery trip, but it was very tastey and went perfect with some crockpot bread i tried to make, that didn’t turn out soft enough.

  3. This is one of my favorite recipes! We make it fairly often because it is easy to make and enjoyed by all. Also, it brings back memories of the 4th of July we spent with you and how everyone participated in making it. Love you!
