O dear mothers, please understand that you have a very sacred trust reposed in you by God! He has in effect said unto you, “Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages” (Exodus 2:9). You are called to equip the future man of God, that he may be “thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:17). If God spares you, you may live to hear that pretty boy speak to thousands, and you will have the sweet reflection in your heart that the quiet teachings of the nursery led the adult man to love his God and serve Him.
Those who think that a woman detained at home by her little family is doing nothing think the reverse of what is true. Scarcely can the godly mother quit her home for a place of worship. However, dream not that she is lost to the work of the church. Far from it, she is doing the best possible service for her Lord.
Mothers, the godly training of your offspring is your first and most pressing duty. Christian women, by teaching children the holy Scriptures, are as much fulfilling their part for the Lord as Moses did in judging Israel, or Solomon in building the temple.
~C.H. Spurgeon
Wonderful post!!! I was getting ready to post a blog regarding something along the same lines….about a conversation I had with a young lady. π
So rich and deeply encouraging!
Oh yes, there is no mission-field more important than the one right where we live while we have children in the home and there is no job more important that we as women can hold!
What powerful words. It makes me motivated to keep trying and to not give up. What a mission we have as mothers. It makes me realize (once again) what is really important-keeping house or training the children.
What encouraging words. It is so very true……our family is our ministry. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.
Words could never be more true. In my quiet time this morning I was praying specifically in this area you were talking about ~ just making sure I do what I need in this area for my kids. Your post was another affirmation this is an area I need to step it up a little more in. Thanks for the reminder. BTW, tea lady recommended this post. I’m glad she did!
Charles H Spurgeon is a man of great wisdom. Thank you for posting this. Sometimes we stay at home moms need all the encouragement we can get. Thank you for reminding me again what is most important!
Blesssings!
Great words to meditate upon.
Amen!!!!! So extremly important is our job that we do everyday. Never give up! Nothing is more important than being a mother.
Amen! Thanks for the encouragement. Can you imagine? Spurgeon wrote this how long ago? Many, many years before women went to college, or aspired to be anything more than nurse, teacher, wife, mother. That’s something to think about, too.
Every Mom should read this!
Thanks for this post Shan I really enjoyed it.
Shanda — This is perfect — our daughter-in-law (a wonderful christian girl) is in the hospital right now preparing to deliver our first grandson and I’m taking this to her! I’m so excited I can hardly stand myself!! — Thank you.
Amen, and amen! Great words of wisdom. May mothers never think that raising godly children is an insignificant ministry. “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” 2 Timothy 1:5
That is just what I needed today, I have just felt like I am loosing myself, that I have lost worth, and that all I seem to be is a diaper changer, and runny nose wiper. God put me in this place, because there is no one better equiped to raise my children. I am what they need, and I have to step up to the plate. Thank you.
Amen. I will think on these true words today.
Thank you for this post! In church this past Sunday we were talking about Spurgeon, he was very wise.
AMEN! Sometimes is is discouraging to hear others say that unless you are “out and about” doing for the LORD – you are not serving him. Thank you for posting this – it does my heart good!!
Amen! we moms need to hear these wise words and be reminded of them often! We get so tired, discouraged, or just plain lied to. So glad you shared them. Spurgeon is so uplifting and true….as I see my older ones go out…I see them having an influence on many (already!) and I thank God that he gave them to us for a time and he drew us to a place where they saw the Lord was first. Keep on walking, loving, teaching about God you sweet mommies! Jenny
Hi Shanda, this is your xanga french friend! I have just created a blog where I’ll be posting the pics of sunsets/sunrises I’ve been taking for about 2 years. I have a passion for this. Thought you may like looking at it with your kids. For the moment, I have not done much, I have still to put more than 100 pics!! Thanks, have a great day.
It’s me again: here is the address of the blog: http://quandlesoleilsecouche.blogspot.com/. It means “when the sun sets.”
It’ in french but I’ll be writing in both languages.
AMEN!!!!!!!
Hello! I just bounced to your site from my dear friend ozarksfarmgirl’s site, and enjoyed your last few delightful posts. Even though I’m a mother of grown children, who never home-schooled, but did teach high school English for years before going to work in the newspaper world, I knew I’d found a kindred spirit when I read your post about L. M. Montgomery’s books. I must have read “Anne of Green Gables” a hundred times growing up…but I never read but one or two of the others. Now I’ve got to find them! Thank you for a delightful post. Hope you’ll come visit me when you have a minute. God bless you and all you love tonight. (Your children are beautiful, and I love your photos.)
I copied and printed this entry. Thanks for posting it. Young mothers need all the encouragement they can get. Raising sons and daughters for the Lord is so “daily” and can feel unglamorous, and exhausting.
Shanda!! I needed to read this post right at the very moment I opened it! I had just within 5 minutes before been talking to my husband and how I feel like a failure! How I just don’t think what I am doing is doing any good! What is the point in the constant strugglinh..it’s true, what I am doing isn’t any good but God choses so use us and He does the work in our children! But we must be willing to take up that purpose that He has given us! It isn’t easy staying home and going through the struggles! But the reward is great! To be able to be a part of training servants for our Lord! No greater task has been given!! Thank you for the reminder!!!! I needed it!!
May I ask you one more thing…where did you find this? Thanks for your time,Carilyn
Nicely said.
@mom3kids3cats – I found it in Spurgeon’s book, Spiritual Parenting. There is encouragment for parents and Sunday School teachers. I haven’t read all of it yet, but when I read that part I just had to share.
Thank you…. I needed that today.x
