I was out the door this morning at 7:15. The sun was just starting to shine on the face of my house, through the windows, and it called to me. I asked Jacob to watch Caleb in the house and I meandered down to the woods. As I walked, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something sprinkle gently down from the trees and fall to the ground.
What was it? I made my way around muddy puddles and slick leaves, keeping my eyes to the ground.
I found feathers! Small downy feathers, perfectly dry. I looked up up into the trees and saw nothing. There was no sign of tragedy. So, what was it? Why did feathers fall down from the tree-tops on this chilly but sunny February day in New England?
Maybe one of my bird-loving friends will have a suggestion.
My camera battery died before I could get the golden morning pictures I was looking for. But I was still glad that I went to the woods when I did. The feathers felt so warm in my hand, and I felt like I had a treasure in my pocket when I came home to show the children. I have something new to add to my nature journal.
I saw feathers fall like snow this morning. I love that. God gives us wonder in such interesting ways.

smiling in wonder with you
Maybe God sent them as a reminder of the warm days ahead.
Thanking God for blessing you this morning with his goodness. Take a few pictures of your nature journal for us sometime…I’d enjoy seeing what you have put together.
I’m with coolmomofeight. I have no idea, but it is interesting…
How neat! The feathers look so soft. Have a wonderful day!
That is amazing that it happened like that, a perfect time as you were there. It sounds like you were able to enjoy a great time outside.
the older i get the more i find that these simple things in life give the most joy: innocent, fresh joy!
Sooooooooooooooo cool Shanda. I would rather not know what happened I am sure it is a sad story! LOL! How magical that it was raining/snowing feathers, I love little gifts like that when I am out in nature. You captured it so well, both pictures are so different but equally artsy!
Nature captures us with soft feathers, whispery breaths of breeze, golden goodness…ah, “all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres!” Blessings, Laurie
Interesting…I wonder how they got there, too. Pretty, though.
Fun pictures of the feathers! Sounds like you live in a beautiful area. It makes me miss where I grew up in the country. I would go for walks to just think and explore
That is so neat! The feathers look so fluffy and soft! I love your pictures of them. 🙂
The way God’s works and bring simple joy to a moment/day is so neat. I thought for sure while I was reading your blog that you were going tosay that you looked up to see that your cat ate the “canary”. I hope there is a better explaination for it than what I dreamed! Love you!~Lish
I wonder if they were the lining of a nest? That is all I can think of…but it was amazing that you happened to be there just at the moment that they fell. Thought of you a lot today (Lish and I went out for lunch and antiques!)
Love You ~Colleen~
Hmmm…… I am curious about those feathers, too! Maybe they came from an angel’s wings!
They are certainly gifts, so sweet and simple. Isn’t it dear of the Lord to show them to you so that you can show them to us. I can almost feel the nonfelt softness of them. Thanks Shanda! Love you~~~ blessings from SC
