bright red lipstick

I had a busy busy day.  I’m sooooooooooooo glad that I am “normal” energetic Shanda again because I’ve had to have it today–the energy, I mean–.  Lots to do!  Lots!

Anyway, I just wanted to share a few things about today.

First of all, the house was silent this morning after breakfast.  The homeschooled kids like to disappear so that I don’t see them and remember to start school.  I am suspicious of silence, so I went upstairs and opened the boy’s door to see what was going on.  The boys (all four) were playing legos and Grace was doing this:

Apparently it’s much more comfy up there, even if there is a big chair in the room.

Then, during school time, I had a “oh, that’s so cute” moment and ran to get the camera.  My 2 year old, if Mommy is unavailable, always always chooses Brother Ethan as his comforter.  This is one of the reasons why I enjoy  homeschooling. . . .I get to see love. . . .

But, the following episode takes the cake.  The lipstick, actually.

If you have small children in the room, you might want to read the rest of this later.

It all started when Davy-do made himself some superhero wings.

I guess, when you are 5 years old, the next logical step, after the wings, is to . . . .well . . . .

 . . . .change colors?

This all comes from watching too much “Toy Story”. . . .

And, from leaving lipstick unguarded.

And, from having so many children/things to do, that you lose track of one for too long.

The Offending Lipstick.  At least it was a tube that I never wore.  I mean, come ON!  TOO RED!

A mirror (dirty mirror) picture.  Doesn’t David look industrious.

Look in his mouth.  Even his teeth are red.

(And no, I did not use “color booster”. . . .)

The strange thing is, his siblings were not surprised!  Caleb stared with an impressed smile, but all Jacob said was, “He looks TERRIBLE!!!!”  like he thought I did it to him!

This is the point when he started to tell me that his face was itchy.

Keep that in mind in case you ever decide to try it.

Lipstick makes your face itch.

He kind of reminded me of an “oompa loompa” from the old version of “Willie Wonka”.  But I think they were orange.

Then it was time for a bath.  I thought it was so cute that he looked at himself in the faucet to wash.  Does anyone know how to get lipstick off my white sweater, my gray pants, my wall, my white shower curtain, Dave’s clothes, a washcloth, and the bathtub?  He left a bright red ring around the tub.

And I didn’t even mention the trip to Costco.  Yep, those free samples will be the death of me yet.  I can’t keep David by my side when he’s on the look out for free samples.  I was twitching by the time we left.

However, while at Costco I did have the brief presence of mind to grab a couple new magazines.  So, I’m off to enjoy a nice hot, long, bubblebath. . . . .

  1. I think you need that bath. That David is always getting into mischief. I think he must have thought the lipstick was his mask. All good superheroes have masks, right??? :)Oh.. and I instantly thought of Lea Ann when I saw your comment about the lipstick being TOO red. She would say there is no such thing. 😉

  2. I love your photos, you are an amazing photographer!  Hope you don’t mind that I stopped by and I’m going to sub… This is my new homeschool blog but you can also find me over at travelerswife.
Hope the lipstick came off eventually and glad you could have a sense of humor about it!  🙂

  3. Hello again! I’m glad you are feeling well. Your children’s pictures never fail to make me smile. Seems like there is always fun and adventure to be had in your home! 😉
I love the picture of Grace. Love it! lol

  4. This story is hilarious!! You must have known we all needed a good laugh! I am not sure about removing the red coloring…but since lipstick is waxy/oily try some DeSolvit or some other good degreaser. I use Desolvit a lot and it will not hurt your clothing. Follow up with hot water and Oxyclean…may need to soak awhile. If all else fails….Bleach it. My theory is: if it is ruined anyway maybe faded is better than an ugly spot. Hope you enjoyed your bubblebath and magazines.

  5. Twitching…yes, how I know that one.  Costco (Sam’s for me) is not meant to be done with children!  I should take a picture of the MoonSand fiasco I have yet to clean up.  What on Earth was Santa thinking?

  6. grace on the bookshelf is classic! love it. and that boy of yours… how hilarious is he?like your sense of humor in it all.. don’t know if i would have handled it so well. 🙂 love your post – they make me smile!

  7. OH my goodness gracious! wow… I don’t think I’ve EVER seen anything like that! Goodness, I have no idea how to get the BRIGHT RED out of everything, but hopefully someone else does!
(how did Grace get all the way up there?)

  8. Aw Shanda, your kids are just too much!  LOL!  How did Grace get up there without tipping that bookcase over??  And Davy-do?  Oh my goodness!  He really has me laughing this time!  What next!??  LOL some more!  Good luck on getting the red off ~ I don’t have a clue, but maybe some kind of degreaser?  Have a very blessed bubble bath!

  9. Way too funny!  Of course, my daughter came bounding down the stairs just as I get to the lipstick pictures!  I appreciated your warning, and quickly scrolled UP as I hope not to have this repeated in my own home though I pray I would have the same grace to handle it as you did!!:)
And as others have asked, I’m curious, too-how did she get up there?  Mr. Clean Magic erasers are really amazing…I use them on all kinds of stuff…might work on the wall and tub.  Your pictures are fabulous, as always!~Amy

  10. I think for the tub you need little cats 1 2 and 3 or maybe it was the whole abc’s   I actually did an experiment in college for a home ec class to remove stains in clothes….spray in wash is one of the better cleaners…always manages to get lipstick off my linen napkins.  I called David in by just saying “Davy do has been at it again”  He was deep in his book ….reading “Little Men”  about a bunch that get into things too.  But he dropped it and ran right in.  I think he feels a connection to Davy do.  My David painted himself something like that when about four years… but used white ointment   My little sister played with the red lipstick but then fell asleep in my mom’s bed after painting herself and the sheets…..my mom thought it was blood and really had a moment before she realized she was alright.  I appreciate you rolling with it and seeing the humor!  blessings, Jenny

  11. wow…the imaginations of your children astound me. I want to say good job Grace for getting up on that bookshelf without knocking it over…there was a time when my little sister got red on her cheek…she was out on the lawn on a blanket in the summer…she fell asleep, and got sunburnt…I so enjoy seeing the various imaginative episodes of your wonderful children…

  12. I looks like Grace has a little “kitten” in her. I reminds me of when my cat used to go so no one would bother her.
As for “red face.” He’s reminds me of the Star Trek episode with Frank Gorshin (aka “the Riddler”) where his face was painted half black and half white.
Don’t I remember a picture of him covered in flour?

  13. HA HA HA LOL!
This reminds me of when my son was four and he decided to get into some paint I had next to my bed and finger paint our wall brown, when I first saw it I thought it was something else besides paint though!  Got some pictures, maybe I will scan them in later.

  14. HILARIOUS! Can’t believe that hasn’t happened at my house yet, as my boys LOVE to be superheros and have made themselves many different ones. I will not show them this post lest they get a mischievous idea in their heads! And Grace reading on the bookshelf is so funny and kid-like. . .why do they do the things they do?? I ask myself this question many times a day. And on losing one. . .that happens around here so much of the time, and it’s usually Baby Hank playing in the toilet, emptying a drawer or cabinet somewhere or playing in the litter box (OK I did NOT react well to that one). . .such is life. . .these are the days to remember, right?? I love it all (most of the time)!

  15. My dear, Shanda!  Never a dull moment, right?!?  I am really not surprised by David’s little experiment, just simply amazed!  I always said that your children are extremely creative 😎  I MISS YOU ALL SO MUCH!  Hope you have another excciting day!
    Love You,
    ~Elissa~

  16. OH Shanda, my sides ache. Grace on the top of the book shelf just started it! She will someday long to be small enough to do that again.  OH the lipstick, such faces, such a boy. I usually used eyeliner to put moustaches on little pirate faces but this takes the ultimate cake. How How How fun. But I loved the tender brother moment photo as well. My fellas are still best friends as adults. I love that! Sending something off to you today. THANK you for your sweet card and pictures that now line a shelf. Love to you today and every day. M in SC

  17. I can’t believe he covered his entire face so well.  He didn’t miss a spot.  I’m not sure how to get the red out…I tend to avoid lipstick (now I am kind of glad I do)   I love the picture of Grace – it looks like she has some of her mom’s gymnastic talent in her.
Hope your day today is a little less eventful.
    Colleen

  18. I love the picture of Grace!  Please, please tell me that you reprimanded the child with the lipstick.  It may have been fun and funny, but it also may have ruined some things that will have to be replaced.  I don’t mean beat him:), I mean teach him that this was wrong.

  19. You are the most beautiful mom I have ever met (inside and out). I really look up to you and how you raise and spend quality time with your children. Thank you for posting another outstanding blog.

  20. How did she get up there?
Hope none of the red rubbed off on you during your bath.  I think he saw how much fun you had with make up last week and wanted to test the theory.  Haha.

  21. I love the shot of Grace on top of the bookshelf! And David, well, all I can say is good for you for grabbing your camera.  When moments like that happen at our house (and they do) capturing the moment on camera is the last thing on my mind.  I will have to remember to get my camera and clean up later next time.

  22. Oh, Shanda! Shanda! Shanda! Shanda!!!! Your photos are a testimony that God places the right children with the right parents! I would have never handled all that “excitement” with such aplomb! To answer your red-removal question . . . I don’t know? Oxy-Clean?Mother of the Year award goes to Y-O-U!!

  23. Oh my, he looks so funny.  That boy…hehe.  Hey, I want to make sure to make a meal for Amanda, can you put me on the list please?  Let me know what days are open, and whatnot.  Thanks so much. 🙂

  24. Hey Shanda,Wow gotta love that red lipstick….David reminds me so much of Daniel! Not only how did Grace get up there, but how did she get down????? I am glad you can take pictures of your eventful days and smile at them…I am not sure I would handle things as nice as you do! Have a nice weekend. Miss you. I am so happy for Amanda and Jason too. Give that little one a kiss from me 🙂

  25. My kiddos do the same thing… go away and be quiet, and maybe Mom won’t remember it’s a school day… Thoroughly enjoyed the post!  I love HomeSchooling too because I get to see love.  BTW, HOW did Grace get to the top of the bookshelf??

  26. Oh my!!! Yep, its when the house gets quiet you gotta go see…. that’s always when, ahem, interesting stuff happens at our house too. Well, he’s definitely RED isn’t he? He did a great job covering every inch of his face. Have you gotten the red out of things yet? I know Cheryl (copperswife) swears by Zout. I have used it once or twice, but never on red lipstick. Soak the sweater in Oxy Clean maybe? I try to avoid taking all of mine to the store at the same time when its just me. I usually end up with a headache just trying to keep my 3 together and get done what I need to as quickly as possible. Hugs I feel for you. Costco is such a neat store though. Ya gotta love those samples. lolHugsP.S. Praying for little Weston.
