Jacob and Grace joined a children’s choir in September and on Saturday we went to their very first concert.  When I was in school, I had so much fun singing in our school chorus and learned so much from the experience, that it is really important to me to try to give my children the same opportunity.  I love the fact that they have such a fun, understanding teacher and were able to learn quality songs.  She managed to train them to sing so sweetly and beautifully.

Jacob and Grace are in the younger choir called “Jr. Trebles” and the older choir, which also performed on Saturday, is called “Treblemakers”.  It is all through a local University’s Community services and it’s a half hour drive for us.  Jacob’s violin lessons are also through them.  In fact, because he is a violin student, he was able to join Jr. Trebles for free.  We paid for Grace to join and in January when they resume classes, Ethan will get to join as well.  (for free because he will be taking guitar lessons).

It was sort of a risk for me to enroll them and I held my breath hoping that they would get quality training and thankfully, they are.  One of their songs was in German and one was in Latin!  They also were able to sing along with the “University Collegium Musicum” for one piece, with stringed instruments.  I was so happy for them,  I feel it is important to get musical training and experience because it is something that will stay with them their whole entire lives.

I’m so thankful for my awesome zoom lens, we sat toward the back because of Caleb, and yet I was able to zoom in and take these photos, all w/out flash.

They sang:  “Velvet Shoes”, “Vom Himmel”, and “In Dulci Jubilo”

“From high heaven I come.  I bring you new tidings.  I bring you so much good news that I want to say and sing it.  To you is born today a little child, from a Virgin besides, a little child so sweet and fine that he should be your joy and wonder.”  translation of “Von Himmel” lyrics that made me cry.

Jr. Trebles joined the Treblemaker’s choir for the last piece of the afternoon, “Snowflake Song”

Something funny:  David (my five year old) was looking at all the people in the audience and he noticed a man with a beard.  Rich laughed when he leaned over and whispered, “Remember Uncle David?  He grew one of those big hair things on his chin, too!”

Something not as funny:  We lost James the Red Engine at the concert.  I think I was more sad than Caleb, because we have had that train for years, he was all chipped and old looking.  I hope he’s having a good time, where ever he is.  Maybe he’s still in the concert hall enjoying beautiful music.

  1. What a wonderful place to be: on stage, black curtain, bright lights, audience…I can just feel the butterflies your kids must’ve had!  These are great pictures for being from the back of the audience.  I’m hoping the little train is enjoying his time in the concert hall.  He’ll be a cultured little train that’s for sure!

  2. That is so wonderful.  I loved my experiences in choir throughout the years.  It really motivated me to keep singing and pursue other musical endeavors!  I know your children are so thankful and blessed!

  3. This is so awesome.  I have always wanted my future children to have the opportunity to sing in a children’s choir, as well as play instruments like my siblings and I did.   You are giving your children a wonderful gift.

  4. What a wonderful opportunity! They will always remember this enriching experience…I have good memories of taking part in orchestras and choirs as a young person.I played the cello… Any future cello players there in your house? Grace? :o)

  5. What a wonderful program! Not only will they learn music theory but the value of dedication as well. I have wished many times that I took up music as a child. I love to sing and thank God that He has given me the ability, but perhaps I’ll take my husband up on his offer and let him teach me a bit of piano! I’d love for our family to make music together. Do you play an instrument, Shanda? I can’t recall you mentioning it before. Anyway, have a good day friend!

  6. That is great! This year our homeschool coop started a children’s choir and I’m pleased too at how much Shannon has learned. They had their performance before Thanksgiving and I never got the pictures posted.

  7. I really enjoyed my time spent in choirs. By high school, we tackled some pretty tough stuff. Nothing like music for rounding out an awesome foundation! BTW: Enjoyed all the pics. What a superb camera (as well as the picture taker!).

  8. What beautiful pics…So pretty, the children, the lighting and all.  So Christmas!
I’m sorry about the little train….A friend of ours lost their little one’s special teddy bear, ebay came to the rescue for one just like it!  ; )  I pray you’ll either find the original or one like it…Those things are important I know.
You take care now, it’s been busy for me and a bit trying but nothing serious at all…just the daily grind! : )
    Hugs!   ~Amelia

  9. I would enjoy hearing them sing.  Introducing them to music when they are young is the best time. Lord willing they will love it when they are older.  Performing is a good form of communication and helps in overcoming stage fright. You are doing well….and they will thank you for it some day.   Btw…your camera did a great job…w/o flash. Amazing.

  10. I agree with you totally! I think a musical education is one of the best gifts we can give our children for it is a life long treasure to enjoy and be enjoyed by others.
My older daughters took 8 years of piano and together we acted in various dramas and musicals, dancing, singing and speaking lines. It was such fun and the memories we have made will be life long.
Our younger girls are in their first year of piano lessons and they are in a singing and signing class through our co-op. All of our kids love musci. I have a little violin that I would love for one of them to take lessons with but not sure when that will happen.
How wonderful that your kids have such a precious opportunity. I love the pictures and am so happy for them that their very wise parents gave them this gift. Good for you and your hubby!
I enjoyed your “quiet moments” post below. That was a precious gift from God to you…..those moments to spend alone with God! Good for you!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Jana

  11. Very nice pictures.  So sorry to hear about the train toy but what a hoot I got out of David’s comment!  I hope uncle David did too!  I’m so glad you children enjoy music and I hope they enjoyed performing. Love, Lish

  12. What a wonderful opportunity for your children!  I would love to be able to hear something like that, let alone having my children participate in it!  I always enjoy taking advantage of special programs this time of year!

  13. very cool. i’d like to hear them sing! i’ve led children’s choirs. such fun. what a great mommy you are for giving your children awesome experiences like these…

  14. So happy for you all that they have this great opportunity.  I am sure your heart was touched as you heard them sing!  Singing brings such memories…for me piano and my grandmother.  We went to a Christmas concert last night that was very much all about Jesus….I have been singing all day   Loved seeing those sweet serious pictures.  Jenny

  15. What a wonderful experience for your children! At what age did your kids begin music lessons? My oldest is almost 6 and I want to get him started on something. He really likes drums/percussion, but I don’t know if my ears can take it! 😉

  16. What a wonderful thing for them to be involved in!!! Music is so important I think!!! Then again, that is my husbands work…so I think I feel EXTRA importance for it maybe!!! What a wonderful gift that we can give back to God!! and the love for music is such a great outlet for what is truly in your inner soul! (not sure that made sense…) But I think it is great that you have them in it!!! So many people now days don’t enjoy music, know music, or thing some things are music that are FAR from it!!! OK, I am done with my babbling… 🙂 They look so cute up there too! ;o) Great zoom! WoW!

  17. So many times home schoolers overlook the fine arts.  I’m so relieved to know that this is a strong suit with you.  Music is indeed so important.  What a wonderful experience for the children.  I loved the remark about the “big hair thing on his chin.”  Hugs to all.
