As much as I converse with sages and heroes,

they have very little of my love and admiration.

I long for rural and domestic scene,

for the warbling of birds

and the prattling of my children.

~John Adams

I’m impatient and a lil’ ornery at the moment.  I confess, I have this problem of going crazy cleaning my house whenever Important Company is coming over.  At this moment, my Parents are on their way to our humble abode and I know for a fact that they could care less if it is clean.  So, in an attempt to slooooooow myself down, I am going to sit at my desk for a few moments, write, and try to catch my breath.

I believe that our fall colors are at peak season.  It’s raining this morning, so the reds, oranges, and yellows are popping in an amazing way.  It’s so easy to find lists of reasons to thank God when you stop and really look and delight in His handiwork.  As I sit here and look out my windows, I can feel my spirit calming down.

Jacob is doing his writing assignment.

Ethan and Grace are doing math.

Caleb has been waking up around 6 (shortly before or shortly after) every morning and so it didn’t surprise me to find him sound asleep in his high chair at 10:30.  He’s in his crib now, under his favorite “Thomas the Tank Engine” blanket.

David is in the basement, sitting on the floor with a box of screws and hammering on them to “make them hot”.

The top picture is one that I found the other day.  It was taken during baby Jacob’s first autumn.  I put it in a frame yesterday to add to our fall decorations around the house.  I first fell in love with photography when I became a Mother.  I should get out his baby album and look through it again. . .seems like such a different life compared to now.  It was 10 years ago!

I am making stuffed shells for dinner tonight, and a nice salad.

I can’t wait to see my Parents, it’s been almost 2 months now, and they haven’t been here since Christmas time.  They are staying the weekend.

The house is quiet right now, all I can hear is Jacob softly humming a song.

  1. Your site is always so refreshing. Like a tall glass of ice water! I love hearing about your “everyday life.” Your family is absolutely lovely. The porch picture is my favorite… I want to sit and talk right there!

  2. The leaves are so beautiful. My husband promised me a day away from the city next week. We’ll probably catch Metro North to somewhere a bit more upstate than NYC and enjoy the fall. Your pictures make me more ready than ever to get in on the beauty. Fall is my favorite season, but in the city I feel like I miss it.

  3. Can you say vibrant and breathtakingly beautiful? Oh my, I love those trees, instantly brings me peace. We do not have many trees here, nor are there any with those eye-popping colors. Enjoy your weekend with your parents. I know that you all are going to have a wonderful time. I can’t wait to hear all about it. -Tara

  4. GLORIOUS fall color…I’ve got to plan a trip some October and come by your house for tea on the porch and photos (Luv the reflection)Ahh, how lovely the rain must sound with your child all safe and busy inside

  5. I have the same tendency to go crazy cleaning house before company arrives! Too crazy – my hubby is helping me work on that. The colors around your house are AMAZING! And I love that second picture you took of your reflection in the window. You are so creative!

  6. I SOOO want to sit on your porch. I guess I kind of feel like I did by gazing into your photos. Beautiful! The leaves in upstate NY are disheartening this fall. Not a whole lot of color – mainly brown. I am still hoping for a few bursts of colors!

  7. Sighs of contentment. Rockers gently waiting before a riot of color. The sound of a sweetly humming boy. Children quietly studying and a small boy beneath his blankets. And yes, even parents coming. May we all live such beauty. How happy I am for you. Thank you for letting us share in the stillness of the moment. How I treasure you! M in SC

  8. I want to sit with you on your porch and soak in all of Gods beauty He has surrounded you with. Enjoy your weekend with your parents. I just had a thought, lets have a photographers camp out at ShandasLOL

  9. Such a lovely scene with your pictures and your children….the fall colors are amazing!  I had to laugh about the parents visiting…we are on the flip side.  Just getting ready to pack up because we are off to visit my son, Daniel, and his wife Heidi.  Our David has been counting the days.  They live North of us (5-6 hours) in Merced so we are leaving the beach and looking forward to some river and trees…..but mostly their faces and hugs.  As a homeschool mommy I do get great longings for my beloved boys…and now their wives too.  I am blessed that both my boys married wonderful Christian women.  An answer to prayer….start praying now!    Last night we were picturing them getting the house ready for us!  We are going to celebrate their Fall birthdays and celebrate their one year Anniversary which was last weekend (they had the Medival wedding featured on Broncomom a year ago).
My David was reading your post too and said:  “David is a genius!”  Apparently liked the pounding screws   Have a blessed weekend, Jenny

  10. oh my,what breathtaking fall colors!!!
it has been so dry here over the past few months (a state wide drought… severe where we are) that they colors are a little drab. They are still beautiful to me, though.
and thanks for this post… it has helped me slow down, too.
    blessings!

  11. I know exactly how you feel, I always work myself into a tizzy cleaning before my family arrives when I know they don’t care one bit if there’s some dust on the mantle or dirt in the corner. Relax! All your mom and dad will want to do is hug and play with those kids. :)I love the reflection picture.

  12. I do the same thing with company.  I’m hoping for some good mail today :)!  The kids and I just picked up a couple of pounds of pecans from our pecan tree.  My grandma will be excited!

  13. Oh my word, Shanda ~ I’m coming over right now and just perch on your porch for a week or so!  LOL!  How do you stand that much beauty at your fingertips?  Our autumn color has just barely begun ~

  14. I do the same thing when company comes here. I’ve always loved that quote. I have it in one of my Thomas Kinkade books. Love the beautiful foliage, and the picture of your porch. I can see why you spend so much time there! I hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend with your family! Blessings ~
