a big bug

Well, yesterday went by like a runaway train.  And today just might be the same if I’m not careful!  My friend Bridgette is coming (with her 3 kids) at 10-ish so I thought I would take a few moments to post a couple pictures of a praying mantis.  The boys found it when the were outside in the bushes hunting for their arrows (they shoot bow with Rich).  Rich held the bug while I took it’s picture:

While looking this insect up on the internet, I found this amazing story.

Come on back and comment when you’re done reading it!

And, thanks so much for the comments on Grace’s post and for the Happy Anniversary wishes.  You all are so sweet!

Have a great day!

PS—-It’s now about 10:00 and Grace is sick w/a fever.  No company today.

  1. Oooooo ~ I did not like this story!  I always thought praying mantids (correct plural, believe it or not) were so cool (and they are), but apparently they are also very brutal!  Yech!  I’ve also learned that one of the worst dangers to hummingbirds are spiderwebs ~ they use the strands for their nests, but sometimes get trapped in them instead.  Oh Shanda, I’m glad I didn’t read this before I went to bed!  ๐Ÿ˜ฎ  Anyway, your photos are marvelous ~ especially that first one, although now I’m wondering about the look in his eye!

  2. I’ve never thought of bugs as having faces — your first photo is awesome!  As I read the story I, too, thought perhaps they should be called “preying” mantis.

  3. Poor little Gracie ๐Ÿ˜ฆ   Make sure you give her a hug from aunt amanda. That picture of the bug is awsome! Can you believe how amazing God is and how he has enhanced our lives even with BUGS!

  4. oh yikes, they are some strange looking creatures, and after reading the story…eekkk…they give me the shivers…=O  Sorry about Grace, hope she’s better soon and it’s nothing to bad or contagious….=(

  5. NO WAY!!! We used to have a homeschool book about “good bugs, bad bugs”. The praying mantis was considered a good bug. Now I am beginning to wonder. I am going to email this to my bird crazy son, who won’t believe his eyes like me.
Hope sweet Grace is feeling better soon. Everyone I know has a cold right now (including me) Hugs from afar, and love, M in SC ( ps. I was going to use the word bug in reference to illness, but after the praying mantis story I just couldn’t bring myself to say it!)

  6. Wow. Nature is amazing. I do feel sorry for the hummingbird. But the poor mantis has to eat too! I think that first picture is awesome! He is looking right at the camera.
