Homesick for Heaven
Yesterday evening I sat outside while Caleb was playing in the sand box. I had magazines with me but I never touched them because as I looked around me at God’s beautiful world, I was filled with longing for Him and for heaven.
My eyes filled with tears as I thought about it. What an awesome thought that I am actually going to go to heaven someday. I will be there.
“What if it were today? Glad day, glad day, then I shall see my friend. . . . .” (from a hymn)
After I put Caleb to bed, I read in one of my books these quotes from Richard Baxter:
“Christian, believe this and think on it: you will be eternally embraced in the arms of that love which was from everlasting and will extend to everlasting. .That love which was weary, hungry, tempted, scorned, scourged, butteted, spit upon, crucified, pierced. . .that love will eternally embrace you.”
“The noblest of Christians are they whose faces are most direct for heaven. . .What makes such frozen, uncomfortable Christians, but their living so far from heaven?”
“The diligent keeping of your hearts in heaven will maintain the vigour of all your graces, and put life into all your duties. The heavenly Christian is the lively Christian. . .We run so slowly, and strive so lazily, because we so little mind the prize.”
“The heavenly man will be speaking of heaven, and the strange glory his faith has seen, and our speedy and blessed meeting there. How refreshing and useful are his expressions! How his words pierce and melt the heart, and transform hearers into other men! That is the Christian of the right stamp, and all about him are better because of him. . .For my part, I had rather have the company of a heavenly minded Christian than that of the most learned disputants or princely commanders.”
“What a pity that Christians should ever meet together without some talk of their meeting in heaven or of the way to it, before they part. Pity that so much time is spent in vain conversation and useless disputes, and not a serious word of heaven among them. . .Should not Christians be delighted in talking of Christ, and the heirs of heaven in talking of their inheritance?”
Wherever thou meetest a Christian, he is going to heaven.

Just An Ordinary Day Sometime some ordinary day will come, And there will be no hint from silent skies, |
|
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing |

Ahh ~ me too. After going back to my grandparents’ old place, I was so very homesick for Heaven and all my grandparents and my Dad and my dear friend who passed away a few years ago. I long so much to just be hugged by Jesus and told that now, “Everything is going to be just fine ~ forever.” Some sweet day ~ it truly will happen. Thank you for this post ~
I always thought it was funny that us Christians spent so much time tearing each other down. We literally will be spending FOREVER together, so we might as well get along now. š “When by his grace I shall look at His face, that will be glory, be glory for me.”
Thanks for this reminder of Heaven. Loved the pictures of your daughter in the last post, reminded me of my girlie. Blessings to you today~
Yes, I know how you feel. Love your post today. Enjoy time with your family today. š
its so intresting that I was thinking on this VERY thing yesterday and today…(see my blog). It makes me so happy to know if we never meet in this life, we will certianly see each other one day.
I’ve been thinking about it too lately. Come, Lord Jesus!
Beautiful! I like the Ordinary Day poem. Oh if we lived each day like it was the day He was coming back again what a difference it would make! I look forward to the day I can meet people of the Bible face to face and walk hand in hand with Jesus. I’ll even meet you there! Yay!
“..because we so little mind the prize..” I am smitten.
Thanks for the good post.
I think heaven will be sweeter because you will be there and we will be there together. I, too, have been thinking of and longing for HOME today. Oh for the tears of Baxter mingled with the heart that rejoices. Longing for that great GLAD DAY. See you there. With more love and blessings, M in SC
Just being with Jesus would be enough. But how wonderful that God has given us the gift of being TOGETHER for eternity. I have 2 sisters and a brother waiting for me; along with grandparents; my father; and a granddaughter………and many others. Heaven just gets sweeter every day……….
What a beautiful post. My husband and I often talk about how we can’t wait to get to Heaven.
Wow – such a heartening message! I had similar thoughts the other day, when I had a moment to just look at the sky and contemplate. Just think! Our lives our so short even in terms of past history, not to mention the future and eternity! I liked the quote, “…we run so slowly, and strive so lazily, because we so little mind the prize.”
I could just browse your blog all day….so much beauty = )
one of the blessings of xanga has been the ability to meet so many of my Christian brothers and sisters around the world~ and the joy of knowing that if we don’t meet in this lifetime we will for sure meet oneday in heaven!
I have felt this way many of times and recently too! Excellent post Shan and I love the post’s you’ve been sharing about your children! I am so glad to know that I will be joined in Heaven with many friends and family like you! Love, Lish
“The diligent keeping of your hearts in heaven will maintain the vigour of all your graces, and put life into all your duties. The heavenly Christian is the lively Christian. . .We run so slowly, and strive so lazily, because we so little mind the prize.”What a wonderful quote – may this be what we strive for and our experience. God bless you today my dear friend! ~Colleen~
