The Legacy

She could not give her children gold,
So she gave them faith to have and hold.

She could not give them royal birth…
A name renowned throughout the earth.
But she gave them seeds and
garden spot
And shade trees when the sun was hot.

She could not give a silver spoon
Or servants waiting night and noon.
She gave them
love and a listening ear
And told them God was always near.

She could not give them ocean trips
Aboard majestic sailing ships.
But she gave them books and quiet time,
Adventures found in prose and rhyme.

She could not give them worldly things
But what she gave was fit for kings.
For with her faith and books and sod,
She made each child aware of God.

  1. I love this poem, Shanda!  I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before.  That second photo is just so cool ~ of course, the first one is too!

  2. Hi, I surfed over from another page.  Love this poem, and your kids are so sweet!  Your butterfly pictures are amazing.  What kind of camera do you have?  Have a great and happy day.  Christy-Indiana

  3. I had to bring my three year old daughter in to see these pictures. She has four brothers too… she was so happy to see your daughter “in the midst” just as she is! What a beautiful family you have and I was blessed to see I am not as alone as I feel at times in the raising of four boys! blessings to you and yours and have a wonderful weekend.

  4. The poem is wonderful—I want to give a copy of it to the mothers of my grandkids :o)……the pictures are great, too…..all your kids are special, but your youngest son is something else!!! ;o)
RYC:  Have you ever visited the Janice Holt Giles website?   http://www.gilessociety.org/
Here’s a list of all her books:   http://www.appalachianbooks.com/Authors/Janice%20Holt%20Giles.htm#Janice%20Holt%20Giles%20Bibliography
About her other books:  I never did completely enjoy her non-fiction books, and didn’t even finish most of them, although I’m thinking maybe I should try them again.
I really enjoyed The Enduring Hills Trilogy, which includes Miss Willie and Tara’s Healing.  The Enduring Hills is a fictionalized account of her young adult life, when she met and married her husband.  These books take place during WWII and I have always loved reading about that era.  These 3 books, if I remember correctly, can be enjoyed by older children as well as adults.
She has written 10 pioneer books. My favorite, and yours :o), is Hannah Fowler.   There are several others that are about people in Hannah’s family.  My favorite is The Believers.  Her books  are so well researched and her ability to write conversation is so wonderful that you really feel like you are living in her books.  The Believers is about Hannah’s daughter Rebecca and what happens when her husband decides to join The Shakers.
I also really really enjoyed The Kentuckians;  Johnny Osage, about Hannah’s son; Voyage to Santa Fe (by covered wagon, of course); and Savannah.  I believe all of these books feature people who were related to Hannah Fowler.  Her last historical novel was Six Horse Hitch which was a Readers Digest Condensed Book a long long time ago :o)  I really enjoyed it, too.
A lot of her books can be bought from the used books section of Amazon.com
What other books of her have you tried reading?

  5. I LOVE this Shanda!!  This poem is my life.  I’ve not heard it before today but plan on copying it and writing it on my heart.  The pictures are cute.  The puppy is getting big!  Also, I like your new profile picture..you are a happy spirit aren’t you?

  6. This is a beautiful poem.  I’m struggling a bit right now with having two toddlers and this was what I needed to hear!

  7. I love reading your posts everyday.  How do you get all the kids to sit so well for the camera….I can snap 10 pictures and maybe 1 will be acceptable…yours are ALWAYS beautiful!

  8. Like the first two lines best, and the first picture, the pets make it so much more…I don’t know, real somehow.
The color is really good, is it getting easier to use the camera?
