Learn Christ

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:  and ye shall find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30

When I copied this verse into my journal a few months ago, I was struck by the phrase “learn of me”.  It struck me that if we have an opportunity to disciple a brand-new baby Christian, the first thing we need to do is direct that person toward a long and satisfying study of Christ.  When I was discipled, I was immediately put to work writing papers on “tithing”, “divorce”, and other topics.  Topical studies are fun and beneficial, but I believe that we need to put aside the list of “issues” and first study Christ, the Lover of our souls.  As we learn of Him, we learn His ways.

This verse can be applied in so many ways.  Not only to discipleship, but to our own personal our daily walk.

What do you think?

  1. I believe the only way our faith will really grow, and our trust in God blossom, is if we learn of  Him. When we learn more about His amazing love for us, we will be filled with love for others. When we learn of His power and authority, we are free from fear. Oh yes! We must study Christ!

  2. True.  We, like the Ephesians, can get sidetracked by issues that may distract us from the Gospel.  We should never tire of the work of Jesus.  We should never forget what He delivered us from.  We should wholeheartedly embrace following Him, being like Him, and begin to change shape.

  3. I believe us Christians often times make the Gospel of Jesus Christ 100 times harder to understand than it needs to be. We often times focus on the appologetics, which I believe are important, but not as important as the simple basics of the Bible.A quick story… I grew up in church all of my life. I attended Church and considered myself somewhat Bible-smart. I went into YWAM (Youth With A Mission) after I graduated from high school. Their first school that you attend is the Discipleship Training School. They start with the basics and go from there. I’ll never forget one quiet time that I had with the Lord where I felt, for the very first time, that He told me that he loved me. I remember crying and crying… wondering why I hadn’t “felt” that before and why wasn’t I taught all of the basics in church. I’m sure they were taught, and maybe my heart was just not open to receiving the truths at the time, but I was amazed at how little of the basics I actually did know. I believe, before we focus on all of the appoligetics issues in the Bible, it is vital we speak of the simple truths… the redeeming truths of God’s Word. It’s life-changing. And who better to learn from than Jesus himself?Great post… it’s always a joy to hear what Jesus is speaking to others about!

  4. Yes, it’s all about abiding in the Father, spending time with Him and his Word.  : )
ryc…I guess the hair color is perhaps different and the makeup style?  ; )   Thank your for the sweet comment.
I enjoyed seeing your new blouses as well, we all need a little pick me up sometimes don’t we? : )   Blessings,  ~Amelia

  5. Yes Shanda, our focus should be first to seek Him and His righteousness, then all these things will be added unto us. He is our everything, we should make Him our top priority. I am reading Woman, After God’s Own Heart, by Elizabeth George. I just had my Bible time and she wrote that “Time spent sitting at His feet fuels and focuses all acts of service.” You have a great post today.

  6. Oooooh ~ I love ferns.  Yesterday’s sermon was about resting in the Lord.  He spoke of resting not in our knowledge, others’ knowledge or opinions, our abilities, others’ abilities, our possessions or riches, our traditions, but simply resting in Him.  Our security is in Jesus Christ.  Life is miserable and unfulfilling if we do not rest in Jesus.  It was a wonderful sermon.  The more we know Him and learn of His character, the more we are able to rest in Him.  You are right ~ we need to concentrate our “studies” on HIM!

  7. why is it so easy to learn “about” Him (listening to sermon tapes, reading books,etc.)……. then learning “of” Him?
reading His Word, talking and listening to Him……THIS will bring refreshment and revival!

  8. Without learning about Christ and who He is, how can we have a relationship with Him, how can we trust Him and rely on Him !It is good to study the bible, it is even better to seek out and find Christ in God’s word…resting in that knowledge then everything else makes sense

  9. There is a song that someone recently sang in my church that is based on these verses.  It is a beautiful song, very touching.  I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying here.  If we learn all the basic principles but fail to know Christ than the principles we learned are in vain.  Thank you for sharing this.  Have a beautiful week.

  10. Great post, and I agree.  Recently on a desire to learn more about Christ and how He related to people and situations, I decided to read through the New Testament.  A very meaningful time for me.  If we keep our focus on Jesus, the rest will follow.  Thanks for this post and reminder.  ~ t miller

  11. I really enjoy reading your insight into Gods word and rejoyce to see that you by Gods grace have dug a little deeper than “surface Christianity”! When I read that verse on your blog it struck me that it says he is”  meek and lowly in heart”…..this is the secret!!!!How true it is that those that are lowly in heart as opposed to of the belief that they know what’s best for them and that their opinions are alwasy right…those humble people…their yoke is light! They are teachable, they acknowledge when they haven’t reacted so well in a situation, they have faith that God knows what he is doing even during trials…yes the burdens of these people are light. They aren’t “stuck” on their own opinions, they take what ever comes their way from Gods hand as an oppurtunity to live out the Christian faith…therefore these people have peace, they have rest and aren’t contatly stressed. It’s when we are too proud (we know how life should treat us! oh and others too!)…to take what our loving creator faithfully planned for our lives, when we are not of the mind “thy will be done” that’s when we are burdened, stressed, unthankful, irritable and our thoughts darkened.”and ye shall find rest for your souls.”Thankyou for all you do and for your faithfulness there in the hidden life as a mother!!! You inspire me to press on and do the same!
