recharge the batteries

“LONG LASTING, POWERFUL, DEPENDABLE – TRUSTED EVERYWHERE” (duracell battery advertisement slogan)

Yesterday was busy.  I tried to sit down a few times but then something would happen.  I set my Bible and devotional book down outside on the porch and never got back to it all day!

I went for a walk in the evening with the older kids and Ethan took this picture of me and Jacob.

After the kids were in bed I sat at the computer and looked at the picture and thought about him.   I want so bad to be a godly mother.  I fail so often, I get grouchy and start to talk with that “certain tone”.  I neglect their souls.  Last night I decided that I needed to “start over” again, which is so natural for us humans!  We drift away from our first love, our first calling!  (which is why we need God to renew us through His Word each day)

I need to wake up!  I don’t want to drift along in this life.  I don’t need the latest child-rearing tip, I just need to think and be aware of opportunity.   I don’t want to miss the chance to teach a life lesson, to grow their character, to sing, to work, to play, to laugh!  And pray, really pray, a lot!

As a Christian, my heavenly Father gives me all the energy and strength that I need to succeed in each task that He gives me!  I need to take myself to Him each day to RECHARGE!

“. . .the inward man is renewed day by day.”  11 Corinthians 4:16c

A MOTHER’S PRAYER

Dear Lord, it’s such a hectic day,
With little time to stop and pray,
For life’s been anything but calm
Since You called me to be a mom–
Running errands, matching socks,
Building dreams with wooden blocks,
Cooking, cleaning, finding shoes
And other stuff that children lose,
Fitting lids on bottled bugs,
Wiping tears and giving hugs,
A stack of last week’s mail to read–
So where’s the quiet time I need?
Yet, when I steal a moment, Lord,
Just at the sink or ironing board,
To ask the blessings of Your grace,
I see then, in my small one’s face,
That you have blessed me all the while —
And I stoop to kiss that
precious smile.

  1. I think that so often, it often seems like I don’t even like my dd. I mean, if I were she, I think I’d be justified in thinking my mom thought I was an annoyance, in the way, irritating, and just plain unlikable some days.
Praying for strength for all of us.

  2. I love the poem! God sees your heart’s desire is to be a godly Mom. As you know, when we seek Him, He gives us the heart’s desire when it lines up with His. Oh, it does!

  3. The Lord knows your  need, He knows your weakness and He know the desires of your heart. He has blessed you with the noblest of work. Return to His word when you can, for there is your strength…and when you pray ask Him to provide that quiet time to do so.We definately go through seasons in our relationship witht the Lord..it’s very hard when we have young ones depending on us for everything, but the Lord isn’t going anywhere, He’s always with you.

  4. i’m not a mom, but i think i get what you’re saying 🙂  i think it’s cool to walk in the woods and talk out loud to God. the kids’ll catch on
good pictures, i always enjoy reading your updates

  5. A glimpse into the holy spirit working in you–very neat Shan!  God knows your heart and we know through his word that if we put Him first in all things in our life that there is nothing better than that!  I pray that you will completely lean on God to help you be the mother he desires you to be!  You are doing a great job!

  6. This is beautiful! After 26+ years as a mom, I still am deeply grateful that God allows us to start over. And thankfully our precious children are filled with His grace and they allow it as well. Praise the Lord for these perfect gifts. May He bless you and yours today and always.Hugs,Blue

  7. I appreciate your thoughts on this as I find myself in the same attitude sometimes.  God has given us an awesome responsibility in being wives and mothers.  We can only fulfill that responsibility with God’s help each moment of each day.  I hope you have a wonderful day today.

  8. Thanks for stopping by…I appreciate your openness and honesty and the way in which you shared your heart – it reaches the hearts of those who read. We certainly need to keep praying – praying without ceasing – lifting our hearts to Him all day in everything we do, listening for His voice and direction. ~Colleen~

  9. Shanda, you are not alone.  You have such a sensitive heart towards the Lord. He knows your heart. I have felt that same way as you are feeling. One day at a time, that’s all you can do. I truly feel that God gives us grace through this time of being mothers to young children. We are always so busy, just like your poem mentioned. However, God sees your heart and knows you what you long for. He will help you. I have been praying daily for the Lord to give me a passion and an excitment for His Word and for being the mom and wife He wants me to be. I ask Him to help me stay motivated and to rejoice in all things. I truly believe He is helping me each day. He will do the same for you. -Tara

  12. What a wonderful poem, that is exactly what I needed! What an encouragment you are to me to know that there are other mother’s out there with the exact same feelings and frustrations. Bless you sweety!

  13. that’s a sweet poem…and thanks for the encouragement that we can “start over” ….I struggle with enjoying my children, and often feel like I just endure the job of mothering…the endless laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc.

  14. It is a fleeting time to be embraced. You are embracing it and that with the Lord is the way to mother. I can see by their eyes, his eyes, that you are beautifully doing what He has called you to do. My grown daughter has read your words and been encouraged. Thank you dear.
