strange but true

We all went for a walk this evening and when 10 year old noticed that his little brother had a rock in his hand, he took it and said, “Can I see your rock?”  To our surprise, he proceeded to smell it with an audible and quick “sniff, sniff, sniff”.  Then he sighed and said, “Nope. . .oh well” as he tossed it back.  He then explained to us,

“I like the smell of certain rocks. . .   and gasoline.”

I just asked Husband to read this and he said that the gasoline part was a little wierd, but wouldn’t let me delete because, “I don’t believe in that.  Once you put something down in your blog it should be there forever.”

Okay then!

PS. Don’t worry.  Our son does not have a problem with sniffing gasoline!

  1. I like to smell the pads of puppy’s feet! I think they smell like popcorn! I also like to sniff kid’s necks— especially if they have been playing in the fresh air and sunshine, freshly washed laundry, morning air when I throw open the windows, and my husband’s hair! LOL! Oh yeah……. I can identify with sniffing!

  2. my dd likes odd smells like that, too. she likes the smell of our shed because it’ smusty, smells like old gasoline and oil and dirt.
(I like smells, too, and not necessarily the pretty ones)

  3. As a child, I liked the smell of gasoline too.  Now, it just makes my head hurt! (allergy reaction to smells that has gotten worse as I’ve aged)  And there is a smell to rocks that have been in the fresh soil – mmmmmm…  I bet that some of his best childhood memories will be triggerd by smells as he gets older.  What a fun thing to know about him!

  4. I think it’s so neat to hear what kids like, especially what smells good to them. I like the smell of burning leaves, ever since my grandpa would burn leaves in his backyard. Brings back sweet memories.

  5. Well, that’s pretty interesting. Like Danishdoll said I like the way Ainsley smells after she’s been running around outside… it’s like sunshine, youth and exuberance all bottled into one smell.

  6. I admit it too…. but, just the faint smell of gasoline, to much and it does produce a headache. Although I’ve never sniffed rocks…lol… I had a dog once that would scoop rocks up in her mouth, chew them awhile and spit them out…we always thought that was funny.Hope you have a blessed day!!!!

  7. I wonder which rocks he likes the smell of???  He must have smelled a few to pick his favorite ones.
I understand about the gas smell.  When ever I smell diesel exhaust it reminds me of riding on my dad’s tractors when I was little.  The smell of corn silage is on the list of smells that trigger memories.  That and fresh hay.

  8. I understand about the rock smell…granite is nice, especially when it’s stuck agains another piece of granite. As for gasoline, it reminds me of my dad’s ski boat when I was young and the fun time we had on teh Colorado river.

  9. Not strange at all!  I liked the smell of gasoline when I was a child as well.  Now it kind of makes me ill especially when I get it on my shoe and it rubs off onto the floor mat and then the smell lasts for days!

  10. wow did I have some catching up to do!!  You have such great kid stories!!
I was just saying to my hubby that I wanted one of those solo dates with my eldest daughter.  A little tea time and a shop.  Aaahhh, a great sounding day for a mom and daughter!!
