Homeschooling Jacob

We’ve made the decision to home school Jacob next year.  He will be in 4th grade.  I will periodically write updates here on my blog about the process.

Today I have been searching the Internet for information.  I’ve basically come to the conclusion that I have to make a decision about whether to use dvd schooling (where the student watches school on tv) or go ahead and just teach him myself.

The other thing to remember is that I wouldn’t be doing this alone.  My husband is an excellent teacher, he’s more patient than I am, more calm.  He’s even said that Jacob could go with him to work once in a while to do his studies.  Whether this will prove practical is yet to be seen!

There is a tremendous amount of information out there.  Now that we have internet, it has really opened up a wealth of information, tools, tips, and HELP!

I’ve realized that I can change my mind set about LIFE and MOTHERHOOD in general as I go through this homeschooling process.  I am convicted about the many many teaching opportunities that I MISS during the day.  I could be teaching all of the children so much more than I am.  (and David is upstairs watching Mary Poppins as I type! *ouch*).  Obviously a balance has to be discovered and maintained or I will drive myself and everyone around me crazy.

I was looking at Rod and Staff Publishers curriculum today and I was impressed with what I saw.

I looked up CT law on home schooling.

I discovered the book A Well Trained Mind, by Susan Baur and I want to see if Barnes and Nobles has it so I can look through it.  Has anyone read it?

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of all these new ideas, but realistically I know it will be a lot of work.  Pray for me as I journey on!

  1. This post really shocked me, I didn’t know you were considering it!  Jacob loves to read so much and from what you described he likes to learn.  He is older and is used to working on his own, I think this will be a good experience for both of you!
If Jeff goes to a different school I would miss my homeschooling moments with him, I do not regret doing it at all!!

  2. Wow! What a big decision. I will definitely be praying for you. It will take a lot of work and organization, but I think you will be an excellent teacher and it sounds like Rich will be an excellent help. Good luck in all of your research. I’ll be interested to know what you found.

  3. You’ll see from my entry today that I am trying NOT to give my 2 cents on every subject, so ebabe is biting her tongue.  :  )
You’ll have lots of fun.  And you always have a friend.
    Lucy is in.

  4. Oh, I am so happy for you!! This is a decision you won’t regret (except maybe for having put it off till now).  Mom is the best teacher for her children.  Check out my yahoo board for some links and info (it’s for East Texas, but a lot is generic info):

Feel free to post me a question–I love talking about homeschooling!
Thanks for posting on my blog!
