I smelt the violets in her hand and asked, half in

words, half in signs, a question which meant

“Is love the sweetness of flowers?” ~Helen Keller

I went to a plant nursery today with Karen and Kathy and I bought 2 lilac bushes (one dark purple, one white), a yarrow plant, 2 shasta daisy plants, a black eyed Susan, and a columbine.  I think I have the gardening gene!  My Grandma Gohl had beautiful gardens, as do her daughters: my mom, my Aunt Colleen, my Aunt Carol, and my Aunt Mary Ellen.  I have such a wonderful feeling of family connection when I am out working in my flower beds.  Whenever we’re at each other’s houses in the summer, there is always a tour of the gardens!

  1. Oh… I want to go! I need to plant some flowers and we plan to put some vegetables in the backyard. I especially need at least two grape tomato plants. I had one last year and this Ainsley thinks they are best things to eat ever, so I really need more.

  2. I’ll go with you, writer! I bought grape tomato plants at Walmart last year and I was very happy with them. Would you like to go there sometime? Or Revays? (that’s where I went w/K. and K.)

  3. I was just thinking that I would like some lilac bushes. But I should wait until my house is in order first.Sign me up for the garden tour!

  4. Hi and thanks for stopping by… nice to meet ya!  🙂  Yes, I have 5 now- 4 boys and a girl, and #6 on the way.  This will be our final addition.  We are excited to be having another girl, finally!  As you can tell by my site…

  5. Oh I just loved the quote, I was in Nome’s garden last summer and she was showing me all her herbs and when I left my hands smelled like basil and such..  I didn’t want to wash my hands.
I wish you lived close, I have no idea what I am doing but really want to!!!

  6. I love gardening.  It is one of my passions!  I think I feel closer to God when I am outside working with the earth.  It is a spiritual thing for me, and it is so fufilling to work hard and then to see what grows from it!  please post more as the months go by about what is ‘blooming’ in your patch of earth.

  7. ebabe has no idea what any of those strange words mean.
I need to plant things outside my new home.  ebabe hubby asked what I wanted.  I told him things that look nice would be good.  He sighed and rolled his eyes.
    Wish you were here …

  8. I’m back again reading old posts, and I love this one ~ the quote, and the whole idea of gardening. Both my grandfathers had green thumbs, but neither of my parents demonstrated much commitment to it when I was growing up. Me, I just want to grow things – anything: trees, flowers, grass, herbs, vegetables, and houseplants. My husband shares that interest too, and he does have gardening experience. I’m glad to discover this about you – I bet I could learn a lot from you.
