Once in a while, I get my spice rack down off the counter and let the toddler play with the little jars of spices.  I remember Jacob doing it when he was a little boy, and today Sethie got to play with them.

My days are full (if my day was a cake it would be VERY spicy!) but, sitting here at the end of this day I’m remembering that the little spicy dash of *watching Seth play* was a bit of quiet time that I really enjoyed.  I sat right down with him.

I think little spice jars are a wonderful thing to play with.    Bright and happy.  They remind me of baking, the kitchen, good smells.

Just make sure the lids are on tight when you play with them. heart

Cinnamon, dill weed, paprika, minced onion, cream of tarter…we liked the red lidded jars the best.  They were stackable.

I bought the wooden spice rack years ago at a tag sale.  The kids love to take the jars out and put them back in.

Look who showed up for play time.

Here, have some ginger~

It was really cozy sitting in the kitchen, on the warm floor, in the sunshine.  Watching my precious little ones.

We tell her that she’s a PRITTY GIRL.  (I know I spelled it wrong, but that is how we say it– PriTTy Girl!)

Seth is 21 months old and I am trying to teach him how to count to “5”.

In this picture, he’s putting jars back and saying TWOOOOOOOOOOOO, (which, to my happiness, was followed by WEEEEEEEE), in a long sing-song voice.

Then, he got really silly:

We laughed.  Then, I got a washcloth for each of us and we washed of all the little jars, and the spice rack.

Saree (another nickname) got a pat-pat on the head.

It was so sweet, I really enjoyed the time I spent with Seth and Sarah today.  It was one of the first times they played together.

It’s almost 9pm, I have had a long day…I have a headache…so I’m off to bed.

Good night, friends!

  1. Good night, sweet dreams! I smiled at the dear little faces, the happiness of counting, and sweet warm thoughts. Great way to have fun and wipe down the spice rack!!!I am just off to make dinner on this end of the country. The sun is sinking into the Pacific in a blaze of orange. Love to you! Jenny PS we are supposed to find out this week if N & A are having a boy or a girl!!

  2. what a fun thing to play with. i love the design of so many of the jars and what fun being able to count, stack and put away and take out again. so fun to see Seth interacting with Sarah. She’s gotten so big 😉 what a beautiful little girl!!love you Shanda. hope you feel better soon.

  3. Precious memories. Very cute and what a cheap alternative to toys since they don’t really care for toys anyway. My daughter crawls all over the house with either a thing of baby powder or a tube of desitin. Babies sure know how to enjoy the simple things in life.

  4. I just love their funny little way of saying words as they’re learning! So cute! I have spices in a drawer and my kids would play with them! We still laugh remembering the time that Jacob tasted the ginger! Thanks for sharing all the sweetness! Good Night Sleep Tight!

  5. Aw! So sweet! My mom used to give me her spice bottles when they were empty, for my kitchen stuff I guess. I just remember opening them all the time just to take in the smell. I love spices! I hope your days are nice and peaceful. You don’t seem your usual relaxed, happy self. Hope tomorrow is better. : )

  6. So fun. Every time I bake I leave the cupboard door to my spices open so the girls can play with them. They sit at my feet and shake the bottles; Joy now recognizes some of them and can hand them to me when I ask. We’ve only had one accident with a lid so far – my kitchen smelled like cardamom for a week! (Which really wasn’t a bad thing, come to think of it … I’m just glad it wasn’t the garlic or the cumin.) Gracie’s favorite is the jar of whole cloves, because it makes such a fun noise when you shake it. Me, I just love to have them playing by me when I’m working in the kitchen!

  7. I read somewhere that there are bakers who open the spice jars and let the kids smell each one and at a very young age the kids learn the name of each one by the smell, it doe not work with my kids because the smells are too strong for them.It is so sweet that you remember doing the same thing with Jacob and now you are doing it with your two youngest!  I was happy to read that you found a warm spot of happiness in your day!  I hope your headache goes away soon.  Lots of love!

  8. Very neat post.  I usually let the children smell the spices as I add them to cakes/cookies.  They often wrinkle up their noses and say “yuck” (except for the cinnamon), but they enjoy the finished product.  Spice jars DO make neat “toys”.

  9. Very sweet pix of your two babies playing together. They will grow up to be very close, I am sure. Even the simplest of household things can be intriguing to little ones. And stacking can be the most fun! Hope you are headache-free today…

  10. These pictures of your little ones are so precious! But if you love them now….just wait 10 years or so and they will beeven MORE precious!! You will be so glad that you took the time to get these pictures I know these days are so fulland exhausting but one day these truly will be the “good ‘ol days”! Praying strength and rest for you!

  11. oohhh you brought back so many memories… my mother has a spice rack almost just like that, and she use to let my sister and I play with them on occasion, we thought the spice jars were so elegant.

  12. I love your spice rack…I have all my spices on top of my stove, but I need something more organized.  I may have my FIL make me shelves. 🙂  Looks like Seth and Sarah had lots of fun 🙂
