“My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands.  Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.  Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding.  Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.  Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.”  Proverbs 2:1-5

I was on amazon.com and read the reviews for The One Year Bible for Women.  I was tempted to buy one online but it was already January 2nd and I wanted it sooner.  Then, when I was at Barnes and Nobles the day after, I discovered that they actually had the Bible I wanted in stock and on the shelves.

I’ve tried to read the Bible in one year before but have never finished.  I hope this time I am more faithful to reach my goal!

The same day I bought it, one of my little ones crawled over it on the couch and the cover got bent.

So, I made a new one out of some fabric and Elmer’s glue.

After reading the first 10 days worth of Scripture passages, I have settled into a routine that works for me.  The moment I get into bed at the end of the day, I reach for my fabric covered Bible and open the smooth pages.  Reading the New Living Translation (rather than my typical KJV) has been very refreshing.  Every evening, I read a portion of the Old Testament, a portion of the New, a Psalm, and a few verses in Proverbs.  It’s hard to stop at the end of the day, I am really enjoying this!

I am sharing my Bible with daughter Grace.  After all, like I pointed out to her, it’s a WOMEN’s Bible.  After reading it for the first time (she’s used to the KJV, too), she looked up at me and said, “This is much easier to understand than the men’s Bible!”

  1. I’m reading the very one!!  I have wanted to read the Bible through in a year for a while.  My husband and I decided it would be good for us to do it together for our first married year!  The NLT is my favorite translation…easy to read and understand.  I had to convince my husband that this women’s bible could be read by men too because the women’s bible was the only one at the bookstore that came in NLT!  =)  What a blessing His word is!Have a great day!  Chanda

  2. I’ve read through the bible once.  Pretty sad since I love to read, AND am almost 40.  (guess it isn’t a testimony to my allegience.).  I am trying to spend more time in the WORD this year though.  Feed on the Words of our Saviour.   It is a timeless book.  I too like reading in other translations.  It makes those scriptures seem so meaning full for today.                       I love the cover you made for it:).

  3. i like the ‘one year’ bibles. i think that they break it down into good sized pieces that you can chew on for the day. it is important to get into a rythym so i’m glad that you have been able to do that. its awesome to hear that the Word of God is soo thrilling for you that you can’t put it down. I hope that one day my heart will say that too..i strive to that end, but its been an up and down battle. Love that you are able to share this word with your daughter as well. Be blessed in this journey of diving DEEP into his word and hiding it in your soul.

  4. I am reading that translation this year as well, I did not like the bright busy cover so I made a fabric cover for mine as well.. Steve and I are reading the same reading program together, we have never done it toegther and it is fun to talk about what we read that day.  He is reading his in NKJ and we compare verses.I love the fabric you ised the cover it!

  5. It is so neat to hear what God has led you to this year. I have a woman’s Bible that has various little messages in it, does yours have that? Great idea to read in the NLT for reading through. I refer to a copy of that sometimes when trying to figure out how to explain something. My Bible has been the NKJV for the last few years, and I change versions usually when I wear a Bible out so that I read it fresh. I am reading through the Bible as well with a list of readings provided from Samaritan’s purse prayer update. I haven’t wanted to do this before as I had other Bible studies, but am excited that God has led me to this this year. Isn’t it wonderful to be drinking deeply from the word each day?! I got a bit behind when working on another study over the weekend, but was able to catch up this morning. Wonderful cover you made! Grace is so cute when she said that. You are great to remember to write down things that they say. David has been studying in the Gospels and asks me hard questions. He is growing into a great young man. Lord bless you, Jenny

  6. I have the NLT One Year Bible…although it does not say “for women” on it… but it is some OT, some NT, Psalms and Proverbs. I REALLY like this translation. Our pastor’s wife recommended this Bible. I’ve been looking forward to reading it every day which I have to admit it new for me. LOL on Grace’s comment πŸ™‚

  7. how great – i will be thinking of you as i read my one year bible this year!
a friend recommended the NLT version, which is new to me, too.  i’m really liking it so far.  my book is called the one year chronological bible.  i thought it would be neat to read the bible as things happened chronologically (which is how i do history with my kids – it makes so much more sense!).  a lot of it is in the same order, but some books are interwoven in others, psalms follow the events about which they were written, proverbs are placed in the time frame from which they were compiled, and the life of Christ is interwoven into one story.  i have been wanting to do this for so long, and this was just the book to get me doing it.  i know it’s going to be a great year!!

  8. Grace’s comment is so cute!  I hope you do get to read the bible through this year.  What I love about God’s word thought is that no matter how many times you read it through you always find something new!  It is a wonderful treasure and gift God has been so graceful to give us!  Love you, Lish

  9. I like your new cover.  How did you make it?  I’m so inspired looking at your projects that you have created throughout the year.  Did your mom teach you how to sew?

  10. I love Gracie’s comment that it is easier to read than the Men’s Bible.  πŸ™‚  I also like Max Lucado’s Hermie & Friends Bible for children. It is in the International Children’s Bible version – very similar to NIV, but it has notes throught out the Bible that children can understand.

  11. thank you for this! this is seriously exactly what I was looking for. As I challenge my students in my youth group to read their Bibles everyday, I realize I need to practice what I preach. I’ve been looking for something like this and am going to order it right now. Yippee! blessings to you and your beautiful family. stay warm!

  12. I came across your blog just recently…I love the cover you made for your new Bible. I wondered if you’d share how you made it. I would love to make one for a very well-used softcover Bible that I always carry in my purse. It would be great to protect the Bible more. I also love the fabric. So feminine and beautiful. What a great idea to share the Bible with your daughter. I’m sure the two of you will be greatly blessed by reading this Bible throughout the year! God bless you!!

  13. @jessnboyz – @Debbie – This reply is for both of you, who asked how I made my cover.  My only materials were Elmer’s glue, a piece of material, and sharp scissors.  I’m sure there are MUCH more professional ways to cover a book, check out youtube or google and I am sure you will come up with a tutorial.  I’m so sorry I do not have the time to explain it right now.  Thank you for your interest, dear friends!   Love in Him, Shanda

  14. I really like the plan of reading in Old, New, Psalms and Proverbs. Although, I’m sure I don’t make it through in a year, that’s the way I like to read. It feels ‘well-rounded’ or something. I miss the Psalms when I don’t read one or two of those a day.Cute cover…no matter how it’s put together. You’re so creative. πŸ™‚

  15. Hey Shanda…maybe you can just put on a picture of the inside of the Bible…so we could just see how you it looks there if you have the time to post another picture. That’d be great. Did you glue the fabric directly on the paperback? Have a great day. AND: Great to hear that you’re maybe having another girl. I’m due in about 3 weeks with my first baby. A little boy!! I’m so excited. Congratulations on your little one and all the best for you and your family.
